In typical Chip fashion, the heist went off with every hitch possible. The moody gray sky started to dump rain as soon as they left. They were short on gear, since the weapons stash hadn't been cleaned after the last gig and anything steel and covered in blood was currently rusted into unusable orange toothpicks. Then, they ran into trouble.
He'd been trying to squash himself into the one dry corner of the dead-end road the gang had set themselves up in, ignoring the water seeping into his pants and hair, when the wall next to them had exploded into a shower of brick, mortar, and violently enthusiastic Navy cadets. Forget that they hadn't even gotten the goods yet. They had a battle on their hands.
Battles usually blurred together for Chip. Half the time, he didn't even remember them. He'd come back to himself, panting and bleeding from cuts he'd only find after the adrenaline wore off, in a totally different place than when he'd started. Sometimes, there were bodies. Other times, there were just the bits they left behind. He tried to keep his eyes up so he didn't have to think about the blood puddling in his socks.
Actually, that was the worst part of being in a gang. He was always out of clean socks. If Reuben had told him about how much he'd spend monthly on dry cleaning, he might have reconsidered if this was the right career path for him.
