“I am. I can see that you’re too.” Liv nodded with a small smile “I know… I guess our grandchildren might see it, right?” Liv scoffed “I hope they think of me when they roll around in the dirt for the first time.”

“I think it’s technically our great great grandchildren.” Felix shrugged as he said it. Keeping the Ark and everyone in it alive so that they could eventually return to the ground was worth it to him. “At least we won’t be stuck up here together, you know? And I think they’ll remember those before them who made it possible.”

his thinking over the new information was made vocal by a single hum. it was a little disappointing for the kids. but then again, he couldn’t exactly enter the room with a single hand clap to grab everyone’s attention, followed by the announcement that ‘hey, actually, you probably could have a chance to visit dr. felix if you’re unlucky.’ so what they didn’t know . .  . “thought this thing was impermeable and indestructible. little too much trust in it, huh?” he mumbled rhetorically. “not protect them,” amir interjected quickly, smile indicative of his playfulness. “take care of them after the damage is done. don’t let your head get too big.”

“It’s a tin can filled with radiation.” Felix replied casually. They were all being exposed to more of it than any humans ever had. But, they’d build up a tolerance to it and survive. He put a hand on his chest dramatically. “Why, I’d never! I’m only the youngest qualified doctor this place has ever seen. No big head here.” He was obviously joking. Felix was one of the people least likely to brag or get a big head. He didn’t think he was that smart or talented. Lucky and hard-working maybe, but not smart and talented. He ate ate a portion of his food before speaking again, this time in a lower voice. “Keep this between you and me, but medical’s lower on stock than we should be this week. We’ve been robbed. We’re not supposed to tell anyone, but you’re not just anyone, and I mean, if you see anything...”

“Oh no, I don’t mean someone on the ground,” Mila said, shaking their head quickly. They couldn’t help but roll their eyes at the solar flare explanation. “Of course it’s solar flares - but who controls the sun? Did you think about that, Doc? They do. They’re watching out for us.”

Felix blinked for a moment, not entirely sure if they were being serious or not. When it became apparent that they weren’t joking, he slowly nodded. “Right. Yeah. Well, who do you think controls the sun then?”

“i think i’d like it more if i knew what it was, but i can’t remember the last time you let me down so..” she breathed out a small, airy laugh. it was true though, hermione couldn’t remember a time that felix was anything other than an older brother figure to her. arms crossed, she smiled at the thought. she was glad to hear his answer, more than anything. “it’s just.. something i hear a lot. you know me, i try to not care about what other people think but.. that’s not even easy. even my dad mentions it a lot.” 

“You’ll find out in a minute! Be patient!” Felix replied, feigning annoyance. He took her impatient for excitement, for which he didn’t blame her. He had shown her cool things before. She had every reason to be excited. “You shouldn’t care what other people think. It doesn’t matter, you know? And you do wilder things than I did at nineteen. Or now.” All Felix did at nineteen was train to be a doctor and worry about the qualification test. He didn’t exactly go out to parties and hook up with people half as much as Hermione did.

Mila looked up, and smiled a bit when they saw it was Felix who stopped. “They’re trying to help us, Doc,” they said, pointing to the lights, holding the fabrics with one hand instead of both. “Haven’t you noticed that usually it’s just blue and green? Well, I have this theory that it’s their way of telling us it’s still toxic down there.” Mila had a lot of theories, too many to talk about right now. 

“They who?” Felix asked, raising an eyebrow and glancing from the lights to them and back. He wasn’t entirely sure, but Felix remember from school that the lights occurred because of a solar flare. Which added up, they had to deal with a solar flare yesterday. “There’s not anyone left there on the ground, and I think they happen because of solar flares...”

The halls were crowded, and Mila was making their way through them, old fabric in their hands as they weaved between people. They didn’t think about the fact that hours ago, these clothes had been worn by people still alive. That they’d been stripped of their clothes before being floated, and now they were expected to re-create the clothes for new, very living people. But Mila had a knack for forgetting those kinds of things. But they couldn’t help but be distracted as they passed by the large window on the way to factory station. Though the fake ‘day’ lights were on, outside the sky was dark and full of stars, with the aurora borealis dancing over the earth, and all Mila could do was stop in the middle of that crowded hallway and look up. “I know why it does that,” they whispered.

Felix weaved his way through the crowded hallway. There had been a “sick” child in Factory station who needed his attention. Really, it had been a pair of parents trying to get the drugs off him. Felix wouldn’t be falling for that anytime soon. The kid was fine. People didn’t seem to understand that supplies of everything was limited. They needed it to last another one hundred and seventy five years. They couldn’t be wasting it on recreational use or minor health issues. Halfway through getting back to medical he caught someone whispering. He halted in his walking and looked up where they were. “Why?” It was completely beautiful. He didn’t blame them for stopping.

THE DARKNESS WAS SO VAST, so tremendous, that Marcus found it difficult to comprehend. How far did the blackness stretch before it was interrupted at last? Little pinpoints of light were stars, vast and ancient, and yet they were so small that they could scarcely be seen. He turned his attention away, feeling dizzy at the thought, and frowned at his companion instead. “Not everyone can become a doctor,” he scolded. The Ark was a young society, but casts had already formed amongst its people. Those who were poor and less powerful, would not earn powerful jobs simply through willpower. He paused, considering his excuse, and shrugged. “Depends. Got anything to reduce swelling?” 

Felix didn’t share the same mentality, but he knew better than to voice it. Sure, someone from another station may have more obstacles to overcome, but they’d still be able to become a doctor if they worked hard enough at it. Being a doctor was difficult, but rewarding. And not just living on Go-Sci. Keeping the Ark healthy was its own reward. “I guess, yeah, but I’m off-duty, so you should head over to medical unless it’s an emergency. What’s the issue?”

the organization of the storage room was almost unbelievably simple. brilliantly simple as francisco liked to describe it. "always just ‘okay.’ a life filled with a series of okay’s.” he remarked, a slight smile pulling one corner of his mouth up. he was no stranger to felix’s defenses. naturally went over to the refrigerator labeled ‘a’ to look for any prepared aloe out of a multitude of others, twenty-five to be exact. “oh, that’s shocking. how so? i mean, you have your job and everything, so… what aspect of your future?” he asked as he searched.

“Hey, okay isn’t bad.” Felix defended, looking through some of the fridges himself. “It could be worse.” But he knew Francisco was right. He always answered okay to that question. It wasn’t that great of a default answer. He’d need to work on that, but not at that moment. He had more pressing matters to deal with. “Oh, just my life partner.” He said it so quickly and seriously it could have been mistaken for a joke or sarcasm. “I mean, that’s the next step for me? I’ve got the job. Gotta get with someone and have a kid. But you know Persephone Fraiser? My dad’s been friends with her parents since before the Ark. Apparently her parents, with my dad’s help, are trying to set us up. They want us to get married.”

“I wasn’t really going to ask.” Liv stated as she sat opposite to Felix, not really looking at him. The moon had her attention instead. “You know, my mother used to tell me that the moon isn’t this pretty when seen from earth.” the girl pointed as she took a bite from her food. 

“You on dinner break?” Felix asked, recognizing her as another doctor from medical. In regards to the window, he shrugged. “I guess we’ll never find out. We get a good view then, though.” But if he was being honest, he’d rather be looking up at the moon from the ground, rather than from space.

“cool. second option, after leaving, was to start crying.” he once again settled in, making himself as comfortable as leaning against metal would allow. “it works for the kids, who still know nothing about birds. no seagulls— or the grey ones that everyone hates. somehow we got on the sun and it making everything bright. and hot too, which turned into sun damage. but we don’t have to worry about that, so it was off topic. but before i could calm everyone down and get them focused again, someone made sure to make it a point that if we did have to worry about the sun … dr. felix is here.”

“That would have been pathetic. Glad I saved you from that.” Felix replied with a laugh. He nodded and ate as his friend talked about the kids. He wasn’t surprised that they got off topic so easily. “We’re actually getting exposed to loads of solar radiation. And regular radiation. But, that’s a different type of sun damage than what they were thinking of, I guess.” He grinned. He liked coming into his class and having the kids think of him as some sort of superhero doctor. It wasn’t true, of course, but Felix wasn’t about to stop them. “Glad they think that I alone can protect them from the sun.”

if he wasn’t sitting alone, silas tended to venture to people he already knew, as he wasn’t as eager to make new acquaintances. ironically within the overpopulated dining hall, he couldn’t find anyone recognizable. unbothered, he walked out with one piece of food already in his mouth. he turned his head to find felix sat at the window all alone. his muffled speech was finally cleared when he finished his bite. “don’t you ever feel claustrophobic when looking out these? i do.” he sat with his back facing the window. “haven’t seen you in a while. you doing alright?” 

“The opposite, actually.” Felix replied, glancing from his companion to the window. “It reminds me that the universe is huge, and none of our problems matter in retrospect.” He shrugged and took a bite of his meal before replying. “I’m doing okay. I don’t know. How are you though? Anything interesting happen recently?”

felix’s response came with a sharpness– it appeared yara was getting underneath his skin, just as he was getting underneath hers. “isn’t it? i mean, you don’t keep me healthy. i’ve always been a pretty fit gal, but if that helps you sleep at night…” her words didn’t fall fast, they flew, like they’d been torn from her mouth. “i’m sure the tiny ones appreciate it though.” yara tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear as she donned her feet on top of the table, right next to felix’s dinner. “huh. guess your right. word travels fast around here though, not much else to do but gossip.” she shrugged her shoulders, followed by a sigh. “still, she was floated nonetheless.”

He couldn’t hold back the eyeroll that followed her comment. The notion that the Ark would be okay without doctors was completely ridiculous. Medical kept everyone healthy, even those who were lucky enough to be born with good health. “Well, not everyone can be as lucky as you, Yara.” Felix replied, stabbing at his food as he spoke. He raised his eyebrows when she put her feet on the table. “Do you mind? People eat here. That’s disgusting.” She was honestly unbelievable. Felix didn’t want to spend another minute in her company, but getting up now would only make her win. “You could stop talking about things you know nothing about, and, I don’t know, do your job.”

the walk from felix’s spot to the cafeteria was full of people. hermione, of course, couldn’t go without saying hello to ten different people, but his response made her whimper. “i’ll go along. i won’t be happy about it, but i’ll go along.” she was purely joking, and hoped for one that felix could sense that as well. after a long silence from her, she asked “am i immature?” 

“I think you’ll like it, and it’ll be worth going along with me.” Felix assured her with a small smile. They fell into a comfortable silence as they walked through the halls of the Ark, which was broken by Hermione. He glanced down at her as they walked. “No. What made you ask that?” Mature wouldn’t be the word he’d use to describe her, but immature wasn’t one either.

hermione waited impatiently for felix to finish eating, never ceasing to annoy him. at one point, she got up and left abruptly. however, returned with a fork and began to steal from the older boy’s plate. “what?” she asked innocently. “i’m helping you finish.” shoulders shrugeed, she exaggerated her italian accent and pretended to be clueless. “come on, tell me where we’re going!” she said in between bites, “i will literally go there myself and just wait for you to come. please felix, please.” seeing it didn’t work, she quit. “alright” she spoke normally, defeated. when he was finally done, hermione got excited once again and went as far as throwing out his food for him. “ok! where are we going? i’ll race you!”

He knew Hermione could whine and pester him, but damn could she whine and pester him. It only added fuel to his fire and made him eat slower to pester her back. Alas, he finished his rations, and had no excuse to make her wait any longer. “Just, come along, alright? It’ll be better if I show you.” He beckoned her to follow him and took off down the hall. He walked slowly enough for her to catch up. There was a chance that she might have seen it before, but he doubted it. She never would have had a reason to, and Felix only ran into it by accident.

yara blinked feigned confusion away as she pressed the palm of her hand against her heart, a giggle escaping parted lips. “hm. couldn’t be me, felix. the argo station doesn’t have bloody placenta, you know?” she looked at felix through dense lashes, a coy smile tugging at the ends of her lips. “we also don’t have babies who piss everywhere, and that’s exactly what i’m gettin’ a whiff off, you know?” yara cleared her throat as she began to pick at her food, laying her chin in the palm of her hand. “seems as if you’ve forgotten i’m one of the reasons you’re eating today, hm?” her words rolled off her tongue, brows quirking as she waved a finger in the air. “tell that to the lady who died of a stroke last week. she’s just out there floatin’ around. if there is an afterlife, i bet she’s pissed.”

Felix let it drop. He knew he didn’t smell, and he wasn’t going to continue having a ridiculous and immature argument. He smiled slightly and sipped on his water. So she really was just going to sit here next to him and not shut the hell up. Great. She was right about the food. It was thanks to her. But it was thanks to him that she was healthy enough to grow the crops. “It’s just fantastic how everyone on the Ark works together to keep everyone alive. Mecha keeps the Ark alive, you grow food, I keep everyone healthy.” Another smile followed the statement as he ate his food, but it was quickly dropped at her next statement. That lady hadn’t been his patient, but he was working at the time. It was deemed as a tragedy anytime anyone was lost in medical, and all of medical went silent for a minute in honor of her life. “She passed on the Ark, she wasn’t floated as a criminal. And, it doesn’t really look good to be commenting on things you’ve only heard rumors about. You don’t know what happens in medical.”

                     ❝none taken, i don’t want to marry you either, felix.❞ persy sipped on her water carefully and glanced at the menu before her. she could feel the walls closing in on her because of their conversation and needed to focus on something else. her eyes still scanning the menu, she replied: ❝what we’re going to do is nothing. soon enough they’ll figure things out.❞

At least they were on the same page about that. But doing nothing didn’t seem smart. But then again, he couldn’t say he knew her parents- or his- all that well. “Are you sure? Wouldn’t confronting them about it end it quicker?” His eyes glanced at them a few tables away. They were talking quietly and he caught her mom glancing at them. A waiter walked over to take their orders before he was ready, and Felix ordered the first thing he saw- a salad with shrimp.

         ‘ i do want, thank you, ’ aurora says as she happily takes her place next to the window. with the moon in sight and decent company, she was already starting to feel relaxed. the girl thrived around people, but the dining hall was too full for even her at this time. that’s what she got for dilly-dallying. ‘ i’m so glad you found a place to sit. it’s pretty wild in there, huh ? i’d usually try to get here early enough to find at least one seat, but the pa system was on the fritz so i wanted to help nadia get that fixed before i left. and nadia told me that owen was trying to play off one of her ideas as his own to the chief this morning, which is just absurd. i’m sure he’s got some good ideas cooking up in that head of his somewhere. ’ letting out a soft sigh, she realizes she hasn’t actually eaten anything since she’s sat down. she takes a bite of chicken and hums with content. ‘ so. how was your day ? ’

Felix welcomed her to sit next to him with a silent smile and nod. He liked talking to Aurora. He never had to worry about carrying the conversation since she did it on her own. He just got to nod and listen and eat his dinner. He enjoyed the update on the gossip in engineering. For someone who wasn’t in engineering, he knew quite a lot of the gossip thanks to Aurora. Felix shrugged and offered her a half-smile. “Not half as interesting as yours. It’s been decent. I’ve got the day off, unless something goes wrong.” Being his neighbor, Aurora knew as good as anyone that his days off came with terms and conditions. Once, on his ‘day off’, there was an emergency in medical and he ran into her while he was leaving his room. “Anything else interesting happen? Did Owen tell the chief the idea? What was the idea, anyway?”
