5 Lessons for Entrepreneurs Caine has Learned:
1. Be nice to customers.
2. Do a business that is fun.
3. Do not give up.
4. Start with what you have.
5. Use recycled stuff.
When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don’t blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet if we have problems with our friends or family, we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like the lettuce. Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade using reason and argument. That is my experience. No blame, no reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you understand, and you show that you understand, you can love, and the situation will change.

Concrete abatement is the gorilla in the room. Only it weighs a lot more than 800 lbs. Environmental organizations encourage concrete abatement with urban greening initatives; it will help with runoff, which helps with water quality in watersheds. Serious amounts of overgrown, cracked and hazardous concrete surface the Bethel Street lot, each small in scale but cumulatively problematic. Parking pads, curbs, garden pathways, sidewalks, fenceposts, all held together in a wretched maze of crumbling masonry. Demo work began Saturday with the awesome (and I don't use that lightly) muscle and enthusiasm particular to Marines, Army Rangers and their friends. Operation Oliver showed up with pickaxes, sledges, demo hammers and more and made an impressive impact on the issue. We've got a lot more to clear, but its a start.
In order to further the goals of creating a playscape for local kids, "greening" the adopted lot and engaging in sustainable and responsible space development, we opted to use the rubble as the filler for a large, crescent shaped landform, (inspired by Space2Place's Terrain For Play guide).

Modular furniture. Brilliant.
I visited the National Building Museum today and had a peek and the indoor mini golf project. I was disappointed that it wasn't in the atrium, inviting spectators for the 'sport' and displays. Instead it was holed away in a exhibition hall, and from what I could see it wasn't very impressive. Grand idea but disappointed in the execution. Note: there's no 'back' of an installation. Some of the pieces were shockingly badly fabricated, and in full view.
I had a much happier time in the gift shop, where I spied the wonderful felt tool set and awesome cardboard construction kit by Habitadule.

Eager Street.
East Baltimore.
These 55 gallon drums are ubiquitous in the suburban car-dealership landscape. Chemical residue can be neutralized with UV light. Strong, durable, readily available. Could this be just waiting for a playable intervention?

Elsewhere Collaborative
Greensboro NC
"Elsewhere is a living museum set inside a former thrift store. Our three story building, housing one woman's 58 year collection of thrift and surplus, has become a living installation curated by hundreds of contributors over a 9 year period. Today, Elsewhere is a space to investigate creative collaboration, through our living museum, community events, international residency program, and educational initiatives. "
Baltimore Free Store
‘We collect unwanted goods and redistribute them to people who want them. It's pretty simple. We are trying to change the way people view their relationship to their goods, their community and their earth. Though we target low-income neighborhoods to distribute goods, there are no requirements for shoppers; the Free Store is open to anyone who wishes to come. Our motto: give what you can, take what you need.”
Recology
"The Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco is a unique art and education program that provides Bay Area artists with access to discarded materials, a stipend, and a large studio space at the Recology Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center. By supporting artists who work with recycled materials, Recology hopes to encourage people to conserve natural resources and promote new ways of thinking about art and the environment."
Unconsumption
“Consumption is a word used to describe acts of acquisition – generally, the acquisition of things, in exchange for money. Unconsumption is a word used to describe everything that happens after an act of acquisition. Unconsumption is an invisible badge. Unconsumption means the accomplishment of properly recycling your old cellphone, rather than the guilt of letting it sit in a drawer. Unconsumption means the thrill of finding a new use for something that you were about to throw away.”

Is there a better alternative to mass mechanical demolition for Baltimore’s growing stock of vacant row homes?
Philadelphia Rowhouse Manual
National Trust for Historic Preservation, Office of Housing and Community Development and Philadelphia City Planning Commission
“focused on demonstrating the importance of preservation as a core component
of neighborhood revitalization.”
“A Comprehensive Preservation Assessment noted that almost all of the neighborhoods in Philadelphia....are defined by their rowhouse streetscapes. As a building type, the rowhouse offers many advantages, but when neglected or poorly maintained, it deprives homeowners of value. It also affects the homes nearby. This manual is one of many projects aimed at celebrating the Philadelphia rowhouse, helping people understand their value (in terms of both history and livability), and aiding rowhouse inhabitants in adapting and maintaining them as a great model for 21st century urban living.”
