Emilia Clarke for Rolling Stone
On shooting her commanding sex scene with Daario (Michiel Huisman) in the fourth season of GOT: It’s brilliant. I actually went up to [GOT cocreators David Benioff and Dan Weiss] and thanked them. I was like, ‘That’s a scene I’ve been waiting for!’ Because I get a lot of crap for having done nudes scenes and sex scenes. That, in itself, is so antifeminist. Women hating on other women is just the problem. That’s upsetting, so it’s kind of wonderful to have a scene where I was like, 'There you go!’
One of the first houses we lived in was like out of a fairy story. We had a stream that ran through our garden, and we played with the ducks - we locked them in my mum’s office, and they pooed everywhere. It was crazy, picking blackberries and mushrooms, rabbits running through your legs.

It does, with an e-reader you can buy a bunch, read a bunch at one time, know where you left off, but there’s something just that I attach more with to an actual book. Though honestly, I have an iPad so I don’t really need to go out and buy an e-reader I could just download the apps on my phone if I wanted to give it a whirl. I will say one thing I can not do no matter how many times I tried is listen to a book on audio. Everyone says how amazing they are but I can’t do it, my brain can not compute. I’ve had a few parts offered to me, nothing too big but you know, I’m happy for now.
That’s a very good perk about it. Because there have been times I’ve went away on vacation and didn’t know which book to bring for the plane. So I packed like five of them and they weighed down my carry on luggage. That and I have lost bookmarks and lost my page while reading too. So it definitely has the perks. But I’d rather risk bringing too many books or losing my page if it means I can hold a physical book. Ugh, I thought I was the only one. I guess for some people, they process things by hearing them. For me, I need to see it and be able to read it for it to stick in my brain. I think that just means we fall under a different category of learners.
sclafsin:
My mum almost bought me one, thinking it’d be easier then toting my books around with me, luckily my brother talked her out of it. Saying I would never use it. I mean if my mum had bought it I would have forced myself to use it but I’d still get the books too. Guess we’re all at a changing point in our careers, a lot is up in the air, you know, haven’t had anything much since Me Before You and I’m up for a few parts but we’ll see if I get the parts.
I mean I can easily see that argument. If you’re indecisive like me on which book you want to read next, you want a lot of options. That makes it much easier in that sense. But it would have gone to waste for me as well. I would definitely try it out if my mum bought it for me. But knowing me, I’d probably give it back to her to see if she could get used to it or wanted it. It’s scary but very exciting at the same time. I hope you do. You’re too brilliant to keep getting rejected for parts. And maybe if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to work together once again.
sclafsin:
You still might have gotten the part in Me Before You. Plus I’m sure it’s going to open up many more doors in the acting world. Always your favorite in the movies? I know Finnick had a big following when I signed on and luckily not too many people were disappointed. Not bragging but it was nice they didn’t throw a fit saying I was completely wrong for the part. Reading the book itself is better I mean it doesn’t have its advantages but I’ll always choose books over an e-reader.
I may have. But my role in Game of Thrones certainly could have helped. We’ll never know for sure, i suppose. I’m just glad that I landed it and I was able to meet you from it. Of course he was my favorite in the movies too. Quite handsome too. I don’t think they could have found someone more perfect for the part, honestly. I couldn’t agree more. I can see the advantages. But it’s not for me. I’d rather carry around a stack of books any day.
sclafsin:
It started so fast and now it’s almost over, that’s crazy. I mean at least you got to be apart of such a big hit of well… this present time in the media. It’s like with Hunger Games being apart of it was such a large part of my life, even though I wasn’t a main character. I loved it, it will never be forgotten. Reading is truly my favorite thing to do then anything else. Everyone is so wrapped up with living behind some type of electronic they miss out on amazing stories I couldn’t do it. I love my books too much. My mum bought me an electronic book thing and I just can’t get used to it. Futbol is amazing and had I not been injured I may be playing still but hey, I got to join the wonderful, crazy, hectic world of acting. Ehhhhhh.
I’m so thankful for Game of Thrones. It’s honestly the highlight of my career because it’s been a role I’ve been playing for so many years and it’s given me so many wonderful opportunities. I may not have gotten the role in Me Before You if it weren’t for Game of Thrones. And then you’d never get to know and love my smiling face. I have to say, you were always my favorite in the Hunger Games. And not only because I know you. Finnick always had a place in my heart since I read the books. I’ve never really tried using an electronic reader. But some people have showed me how to operate them. They never interested me. I like holding the actual book and flipping the pages. It’s much more personal to me because you can see how much you’ve read and how far you have left.
sclafsin:
Enjoy it, as they say, all good things come to an end and I know Game of Thrones has a limited time left. Reading has always been a relaxing way of life, I mean that and playing futbol but after injuring myself all that time ago, I don’t do it all that often even if I still miss it. Eh I think she pretends to love you for the treats, it’s what I do…
Yeah, Game of Thrones only has a couple seasons left. Although I’m not ready for it to end at all. It’s been such a huge part of my life and pretty much made my career. It’s sad to know it’s coming to an end soon. I agree. Reading is very relaxing and it allows you to transport into another world for a few hours. Plus there seems to be some many people our age and even younger who really aren’t into reading anymore, which makes me sad. A lot of younger people turn their noses up at books and think they’re too good for them or something. I’m not a futbol player myself but I have to say I enjoy watching it on tv whenever it’s on. Although it would be much more entertaining to watch you playing it. Um excuse you. You love me and you know it.
sclafsin:
I’ve been reading through scripts of course, you know, got to keep busy or I won’t be able to afford my house, I just enjoy reading. It keeps me calm and relaxed. Especially in this crazy world. You may not spoil her, that’s my job once I am able to punish her for her naughty behavior
Boy do I know that feeling. My scripts have been nothing but new Game of Thrones episodes as of late. I’ll have to wait until filming is over before I can move onto different scripts for movies and such. I enjoy reading too. It’s always nice to escape for a little bit and travel into an alternate universe. Oh I’ll spoil her the next time I see her. I’ll bring her some of her favorite treats and cuddle with her all day. She already loves me.
sclafsin:
Then I shall wait for this book to be returned to me. I expect the same one, same edition, nothing less remember. You can’t keep up with anything I read? I barely read 3 books a week, that’s nothing! Her cute little face is in trouble that’s how, when tomorrow rolls around I’m sure she will get a treat.
Don’t you worry, it will be in your hands before you even know it. You read more than three books a week. Or at least it feels like you do. I haven’t had the time to really read anything other than scripts in months. So anything is more than how much I read. Or you can let me babysit her and I can spoil the hell out of her while you’re too mad to look at her. I like that idea better.
sclafsin:
You’re going to find a limited first edition copy of my favorite book? I find that hard to believe but if you are up to the challenge. I am slightly offended that you don’t know off the top of your head what my favorite book is. I am judging you, Em. I think our friendship isn’t as strong as I once thought it was. Well she best keep her little nose away from my books. She is on punishment no treats for the rest of the day.
If it’s the last thing I do, I’ll find it and bring it back to you. I think I’m the only one capable of this challenge. Being a fellow bookworm myself, I know all of the best places to go looking for rare books. Okay but you have to admit, you’re the biggest bookworm I know, so I can’t keep up with everything you read. So humor me here. Aw no treats? How can you resist her cute little face though?
sclafsin:
Yes but limited edition Emilia, special edition, something I can’t get back. Like I said, really, really lucky she’s cute or she’d be in serious trouble. For now she’s sitting in her timeout corner and hopefully she will learn books are not food, books are friends.
I promise you that I’ll find the book for you at a bookstore one day. I always find little book stores in almost every city I travel to. I’m sure eventually I’ll find the one that Rosie chewed up. Which book was it anyway? She is very cute. I wouldn’t be able to resist that cute little innocent face if I were you. Maybe she just wanted to be like her daddy and read all of the books. You should be honored she wants to be just like you!
sclafsin:
Came home from a busy work week to find Rosie has shredded at least six different books of mine, including one of my favorite books, limited edition and everything. Needless to say this pup is going in a timeout
Maybe she saw you reading one day and decided it looked like a good book and she wanted to be like her daddy and read it too. I mean, it sucks she shred a bunch of books, even if some where limited editions. But you can’t stay mad at that sweet little face for long. Plus I’m sure the books can easily be replaced through Amazon or even if you find them at the right little book store.

I looked around one stage school when I was maybe nine. It just scared the bejesus out of me. I was incredibly open, and the girls seemed fierce and determined.
