Antiques Hunter: Portobello Road
Antiques Hunter: Portobello Road is a new Hidden Object Game that is themed with the collection of antiques. It casts you into the role of an amateur antiquarian who just opens a shop on London’s famous Portobello Road and starts the business of searching, collecting and selling antiques in the largest antique market.
You start with an empty shop with nothing to sell. You will first explore in the Garage Sales – the first playable scene – searching for some antiques. The mechanics of finding hidden objects is conventional: you need to find items in the list, use hints when you are stuck, and get scored based on time and combo. Each time you finish a game you gain XP, and each time you level up you receive cash and certificate which can be used to appraise an item immediately.
The different part lies with the purchase of antiques after playing a scene: you can buy one or more found items, firstly examining (at the cost of one Energy) to show the offered price and estimated price bracket and then deciding to buy or leave. Then you need to appraise the collected antiques by asking experts (which takes minutes) or using a certificate, and add them to your store, setting a price and selling for money.
You don’t make a profit from collecting different antiques, but have to search by playing scenes for items that make of a set collection. Only when you complete the set can you unlock the corresponding new scene. In this way, you gain access to more locations such as the Flea Market and Artisan Antique, and unlock more neighboring stores and NPCs.
The searching for certain antiques leads to the repetitive playing of the same scenes. And even the same items will be priced differently each time you play, which once again makes it a choice whether you replay in hope of lower price next time or buy the items with a price higher than its worth directly. During replaying, both the scene and the item list are just unpredictable, which means that they change sometimes while being exactly the same with earlier play sometimes. Like most HOGs, it incorporates the Energy bar, which is consumed in playing and examining and refilled over time if you don’t ask friends or buy with Facebook credits.
Antiques Hunter: Portobello Road features solid and conventional hidden object games, and threads the separated scenes with a plot of running antiques shop. The progression of unlocking new scenes is slow, involving a lot of replaying. Perhaps, one reason is that it only has three playable scenes currently. Though in beta, the game really needs more scenes to enrich the gameplay. Updates, come quickly please.
