Loraly smirked and let out an amused huff of breath as she shook her head, “You sound like you’re living the life, there. Also thought you didn’t consider yourself ‘a looker’ and now suddenly you’re handsome?” Seeing as he couldn’t even pay for this meal, she wondered just how much he was getting paid at his job. Not enough, clearly. “I do. You’d be surprised, though, I meet just as many characters at lunch shoppes as well.” She quirked an eyebrow at him as she leant back in her seat. His reaction to her words wasn’t a surprise, but it was tiring. And not something she wanted to get into. “As kind of you as that is, I’ve had a lifetime of dealing with me.” She copied his words, spoke them right back at him, even if they weren’t true. It’d only been just under two years, but it already felt like an eternity…. she didn’t even want to think about it actually being an eternity. “Don’t worry about it, though. Don’t need any pity or reassurance, I’m just learning to live with it.” 

“Yes what a life it is.” Sometimes it hardly felt like living, more like dragging through the day. “Well I think I’m handsome, it’s everybody else who doesn’t. I just have great self esteem.” Teddy chuckled to himself, never actually thinking much on his looks or level of attractiveness. “Maybe characters in very dull stories.” The Hufflepuff countered with a nod of his head, not considering himself very interesting, nor wanting others to think the same. There was no need to be digging around and asking questions. “Well a statement like that needs more than a lifetime to validate.” Meaning to imply that it was not the job of one person to make that decision. “Learning to live with what?” Teddy countered curiously, taking a bite into the food he remembered was there.

“Do you have any preferences?” Laurel asked, catching up with him quickly as she thought out loud, “Though in all honesty, it might be better to just find the first place that is open.  The choice is yours.”

“No preference at all.” Other than not breaking the bank for a dinner, but he felt like that would be sort of an unspoken understanding. “I think just first place we come upon.”

Most of his own time out at pubs was right here at the Gargoyle- though over half that could be blamed on work, the next bit plain drinking, and a small sum for meetings. His time going out wasn’t quite what it used to be. Still, he couldn’t fathom sitting in Ted’s place. “Party man Teddy really going ‘ta head over to Toil and Trouble after this?” James arched his eyebrow, an old scar slashed down the middle. “Say I’d join ‘ya ‘ta make sure you hold up ‘ta that but, eh, not sure if I’ll be off that clock.See what the boss has ‘ta say after we get mobbed.” Lux could go either way, but James wasn’t holding his breath.

“Likely...no? I’m guessing Party Man Teddy will just stay here for a bit.” Smiling lightly, it implied he would much rather spend an evening with James than drinking, or rather trying not to drink with all the drunken folks around him. “But then again if you head out, I might just be forced to head out. Look after ya’ and all that.” Teddy nodded his head, playing the part of the brother and the friend, even if it was clear that James could take care of himself. “How packed do you think it’ll get? Can’t be easy on the job for you.”

“Wait-” James leaned his elbows atop the counter as he stood behind the bar. There was a good hour or so until the crowds made it their way, meaning he had a moment to breathe, chat with his apparently out-of-the-loop mate. “-you’re telling me ‘ya didn’t know ‘bout the crawl? Teds, there’s been signs posted for like two weeks.”

“I don’t know, mate. I just, I don’t really go out to pubs much any more, because of work you know.” Teddy had the excuse ready to go, blaming his apparently long hours and tight budget for his lack of social activity, as opposed to the self exile he tried to place himself in. “I went to get a book back from somebody at Merl and boom, there everybody was.” Sighing, Teddy leaned back on the stool. “Figured I couldn’t bail at that point, so I conveniently skipped ahead to catch up with you instead, and it’ll look like I never left. Party man Teddy rode out the whole night, or so it seems.”

“Smart.” She replied, offering a small smile. Once her order had been placed, Persephone leaned back onto her stool with a soft sigh. “I promise I won’t resent you later. In fact, I may be sending you a thanks. I’ve already had a drink or two and hydrating… probably a great idea right around this point. You’ll be saving me from tomorrows headache.”

“That’s all I’m out here to do. Make sure people aren’t making mistakes.” Teddy chuckled softly, but in part that perhaps was true. He knew what the cost of some mistakes were and how some were hard to live through, or just impossible. Nothing like that was likely to happen here, but he had least like knowing he could help others. “So what brings you out tonight?”

Avalon did not know much about work. Her life had always been one of ease- and with relationships, she dropped them the moment an issue arose, slight or large. She had never had to fight for anything. Most of it got handed to her. “I don’t think that’s my kind of love.” She shook her head as she placed her drink down, finished. Then a light shrug of her shoulder as her lips formed the softest of smiles. “We’ll have to see.”

“Hey, who knows, you could be in the middle of it right now with somebody you don’t even expect and then, bam! One day it all changes.” Teddy countered, teasing lightly as he arched his brow at her. “But you’re right, we’ll just have to see. Maybe the love at first sight bug is going to bite me in the arse.” Who had any idea of what was on the horizon. As she finished her drink, Teddy did the same, placing his glass beside hers with an equally soft smile.

“You don’t owe me anything,” Laurel insisted, shaking her head at him, despite appreciating the offer, “I was actually thinking of finding a pub or restaurant that was open late if you want to join me. My shopping can wait until tomorrow.”

“You know what? Just about any food sounds great, I’d love to join.” Teddy smiled lightly and turned on his heels, starting to walk over before their plans could change, keeping a slow pace until she matched his stride. He’d find some way to slip in what he owed her when the bill came about, but Teddy felt like there was no use in arguing now.

A slightly amused smile crossed her face as she dropped her gaze to the table, shaking her head before glancing back up at him. “I don’t trust easily but that logic is pretty hard to argue with.” Why was it that she was more easily drawn to those who made self-depricating jokes about themselves? Well… it wasn’t really a question she had to guess the answer to. “Yeah, I guess if I see you when I’ve finished, I’ll let you know.” She replied with a shrug, not knowing how she felt about making plans to talk again. She rarely did that with actual friends, these days, much less someone she’d just met. “I’ve been promoted to bartender at The Merl Inn, small pub in Phoenix Circus.” The pub where she worked was one of the oldest and luckily the clientele were usually older men who didn’t really want a chat. “I don’t doubt you’ve seen some fucked up things, but I’m willing to bet I’m worse.” Somewhere along the line, she’d stopped joking and dropped her gaze from her companion, instead looking down as she dug her nails into her palm under the table. 

“Well luckily I don’t think you could possibly have any lower stakes.” Teddy added as well, putting this trust in context. There was likely nothing to lose, nor gain, from it. “Yes, well, I’m around. Bouncing from cheap eats place to sketchy lunch restaurant. I’m hard to miss. Tall, lanky, handsome chap.” Although he had always enjoyed a good meal, he went wherever his wallet took him. “Ah, a pub. You must meet some characters.” He didn’t frequent bars himself, but if he ever did it was always nicer when they were older and quieter, or at least that was his opinion these days. “Woah, woah, I work in the Beast division for the Ministry, my whole job is looking at fucked up things. You’re not fucked up, or whatever you think you are.” Teddy was unsure why the girl would use that as a way to describe herself, but he tried to give some reassurance where he could.

With his mention of the possibility of meeting that special one in a bar, Avalon’s smile curved a bit tighter. Teddy did not have to mean her, nor this current moment, for her mind to take it there anyway. Hopeful, always hopeful. “I always imagined it- the moment- being beautiful. I know it could be just in a shop or at school, or something; but  then there’s that fairytale image of meeting their eye across a ballroom while you’re in your prettiest dress.” As she recalled the fantasy, Avalon looked off, lost in the daydream she had imagined for years. “I always hoped it’d be love at first sight.”

Teddy nodded along, understanding her reasoning behind wanting something like that, or at least imagining it in her head. He had heard the stories, muggle or wizard, and the charm that love could have, but somehow he could never get himself there. “Guess I’m a different kind of romantic. I think love has to be hard, and you work for it, and it’s something you fight for. All the messiness of it, it just makes it better. My parents, from what I’ve heard, were a sort of an impossible match. That’s why it worked though.” Everybody had an origin for their idea of love, and they were Teddy’s. “But of course it would be nice to have some sort of beautiful moment like that I guess.”

Abigail shot one last look at the dark shop before turning to follow the man, her hands stuffed into her pockets. She’d walked there on her own, but after the mention of the war she had no desire to wander off on her own. “Do you think things will ever go back to the way they were? Once the war’s over?”

“Eventually I guess? It did before in most ways.” There had been peace, or at least enough of it that anything bad happening seemed small. “But there are always things that change which will never really go back.” The people who died did not suddenly come back to life. That was one of the first lessons of the war Teddy had been too young to even learn.

Laurel had always been a fan of shopping later at night.  it was easier to avoid the crowds making it much more efficient in the long run.  And while she always took great care and time when it came to clothes shopping, her grocery shopping list changed so rarely that Laurel had the exact path through the store that she took, and could predict that she would only be in there for exactly 12 to 17 minutes. Unfortunately she had gotten off of work later than anticipated which only turned into her entire schedule being thrown off and getting to the grocer’s late.  “There’s a couple of places that you can try,” Laurel admitted as she ran through her list of backup places, “Though to be quite honest i’m not sure if you would have much luck.”

“Here I am just trying to get some dinner.” Teddy smiled lightly as he saw it was Laurel standing next to him. Letting his grip on the bars go, he took a step back. “Are you going to try any of the places near by? If anything I might just try to pick up some food around here. If you need to eat, I think I owe you at least part of a meal.” He pointed out their last encounter, trying to keep the spirit of the conversation at least a little more jovial than their last. Laurel never seemed to quite be in the best of spirits, but Teddy was starting to understand that perspective.

She wasn’t even sure why this one would be close let alone three of them. “What is it that you need so badly anyway?” she asked, curious. He seemed quite determined to get whatever it was if this was his third try.

“You would think.” Teddy gave a short huff, but being bothered for long wasn’t in his nature. Well, not naturally, but it was becoming more standard in recent months. “Think the attacks are jarring people a bit. Wanting to keep things safe.” Pausing, he already knew how ridiculous it would sound to be irate over this. “Milk. And cereal. Need it for the morning. Well, tonight too. Breakfast and dinner and all that.”
