Arthur by Kirt Golden (1955), Oakland, California. Sixteen year old Kirt Golden designs and builds mechanical men at home. He built Arthur in only 23 days, in his spare time after school and on weekends. "His body is made of aluminum and sheet metal; his head is cut from a one-gallon paint can, two pie tins and a funnel; his legs are from stove pipes; his hand is a pair of lab tongs; his arm is made of aluminum rod and plexiglass. To make him go, Golden uses five motors — two in the feet, two in the arm and another in the body ... The arm can be raised and lowered, the hand turned in any direction. The hand also opens and closes. As a result, Arthur can actually pick up a cup, book or what have you and carry it anywhere."
