“….Huh?”  Gon looked back at the attractive woman with confusion.  “You wanna see my old book?  It’s just a picture book Runa.  I mean.. it’s probably still there and stuff.  I used to look at it all the time and had it in my room.  I don’t think Mito-san’s moved it.  Some of the pages are kinda loose and stuff, but .. I could.. get it for you.  If you want it that badly.”   He blushed a little.  It was kinda weird, but he honestly didn’t mind traveling at the way back to Whale Island for a fairytale book for her.  It’d be cool to see her look at it.  She’d probably do that thing with her mouth and it was really cute.   “I could have it here in maybe three days?” His gaze went down to the floor as Gon calculated the distance and travel time.  He could even leave tonight. But that would mean ending his date.. it had to end sometime. He smiled glumly at his kicked off shoes. He wasn’t cut out for dating.  He was too much of a doofus for this stuff.

Three days. That wasn’t long technically. But Runa was impatient and also Lady Katherine had imposed a sense of urgency and the will to keep moving.

“Pictures paint a thousand words, the older the better. That means it must have something.” Her eyes met his. “I know this is probably very demanding and I apologise, but can I just come see the book? If it’ll take three days to get it here, I can see it in half the time and work out what I need to do next.”

She’d have to all purpose pack, different climates, get all of her research books and notes on this theory alone. The most important ones, there were some tomes that wouldn’t fit in Runa’s bag. Not to mention the map books were very old and fragile. 

“Please I know this is asking for so much from you and after all you’ve done...” She clapped her hands together and gave him the saddest eyes she could muster. 

Runa you shouldn’t be manipulating him like that. But it’ll work. Hopefully.

“It’s actually like what you were talking about.  Another world with mountains and lakes and rivers and huge trees.  I’m talking humongous trees, and stuff like that. Cool monsters and weird flowers. I used to look at it all the time. It was my favorite fairytale but .. it wasn’t a story.. just pictures and descriptions.  So.. a guide I guess.  If I could, I’d totally live in a place like that.”

Her eyes lit up, that sounded perfect. She needed to see this book, she’d seen accounts of the Dark Continent before, but their credibility was questionable.

She needed to see this book. Scratch that, absolutely had to.

“I need to see that book. Will you let me see that book. I will give you anything to see that book.”

“Your aura was nice.”  Gon said while poking through the boxes.  “Green and soft like a mom.” He found an apple one and licked his lips.  He looked up at Mood.  He was kinda like a dad too.  A good one.  He would probably read to his kids and teach them things.

Runa’s lips twitched into a brief smile.

Soft. 

She’d never considered herself soft, when she was a kid she was full of anger and ready to square up with the first person that looked at her wrong. The first person to make fun of her eyes. The first person to try and take her books.

Even into her early adulthood she was less fist fight and more pointed with words and deals. 

Soft.

Mood grinned, the kid had her pinned on the nose. On the outside Runa could be considered cold and distant to try and get to know or even get along with. She was friendly but there was always a clear separation of friendly and personal for her.

“Soft like moss.” Mood finished off another large piece of quiche and offered Runa a piece.

“Not something I heard about myself or be compared to moss.” Runa gave Mood an odd look. “If you feel you fit in the world Gon, where is your earliest memory? Maybe it’ll give me a clue?”

“But.. you haven’t done anything wrong.” Gon opened his eyes.  “…I mean… if I told you that I was going to have a vacation..you would probably think that was nice, right?  Well.. it’s ok for you too, Runa.  And don’t do that thing where you don’t listen to me and keep on thinking what ya want.”  Gon’s tone was sharper than he intended, but he kept going and pointed a finger.

“If it’s ok for other people to be relaxed and happy, than it’s ok for you.”

“I wouldn’t know what to do with myself...what do people do on vacation?” Runa had devoted a large portion of her life into just being sucessful enough to get leads. That was a full time life style. “Just sit around...and do nothing?”

Her eyes were burning from being tired, she let them close and waited to hear the magic of a vacation.

“Don’t beat yourself up.”  Gon sighed, “You do that a lot.  There’s nothing wrong with how you’re living your life. If anything, you don’t let yourself feel good.  At first I thought you just super serious, but I don’t know.. it’s like you can’t relax.” Even now he was pretty sure she needed to sleep, but something was hindering her.  Ah well, same thing for him.  He scratched a shoulder and lowered himself to lay on his back and look up at the ceiling.

“I don’t relax often...I feel guilty. Stuck. Useless.” She attempted to untangle a few waves in her hair while she spoke.

“I don’t think I’m worth less.” Gon cocked his head to the side and grinned.  “I just think.. I don’t really fit.  I know it sounds funny but I’m pretty sure I’m supposed to be .. big.  I think I’m meant for something.  But I’m not sure how.” Now with his nen.. Gon was that much closer to finding out. “Runa-san?  Did it.. look different?  In there? When you..”  He looked at the bed and bit his lip.  His aura attacked her.  Maybe it was bad to mention.  She seemed brave though.  “…saw it?”

Mood simply nodded, letting the subject go.

“I’m not entirely sure what Nen is supposed to look like in void. I can’t see my own while I’m inside because I use my nen to take myself there.” Runa paused thinking about what she’d seen. “It disguised itself as harmless at first, but that obviously changed. It didn’t look like one thing or another, it was just angry. Angry at me for interfering like I did, angry at you.”

Mood glanced at Runa, seeing her grip tighten on her fork briefly before relaxing. She never liked looking in a mirror to see what anger does, it reminded her where she crawled up from. Being young, angry at the world and most of all hurt and helpless.

Everything shut down at the sensation of Runa’s hands on his face.  The Hunter’s mouth opened in giddy stupor and cheeks blazed in a pinkish hue.  She was talking about homebase.  Afumi.  Safe. Ok.  Wow.   Was he supposed to.. say something?  She was safe.  That was good. But that secret… he still wanted to figure it out.  But her hands.  His shoes were off.  They were adults.  They could do stuff..but what Gon didn’t really know.  Sitting was nice.  Runa was nice.   He liked sitting with her on her little couch with her books and stuff.   “I have a cool old book too.  It’s kinda like what you’re talkin’ about.  It’s old and huge and all kinds of different plants and creatures.” He was staring at her little cute lips. And her cute eyes.  And her cute hair.  Man Runa was so pretty and nice to sit with.

She let his face go after a moment.

“Like a guide or an account of someone’s travels?” She wondered if her journals would ever be worth anything in the long run as the mysteries of the ancient world and beyond unraveled.

“Me?  Well.. I’ve just been kinda trying to ease back into things.. until I get my act together and solidify my Hatsu.  Taking on small jobs and stuff.  Nothing cool.”  Gon shrugged again.  He hated to admit it, but he needed to find Biscuit again and get some help with his new techniques.  They weren’t coming along as he hoped. He missed being bad ass and fearless.  Of course he’d probably never be stupid like that again, but he wasn’t nearly as strong as he ought to be for one carrying the title, “Pro Hunter”.  This whole situation with Runa had made that abundantly clear.

“Sounds like a lot more fun than what I was doing. Don’t get me wrong, I love my research. I just...” She trailed off. “I invest probably more time in reading than I should going out and doing things.”

Runa had an issue with worrying herself to death over not doing enough.

“Well.. I’ve never really talked about it.. but .. I know I’m not like other kids my age..or even most adults. Sometimes I could tell they though that I was different and they watched me.  I pretended not notice, but after what happened.. I don’t want to pretend anymore.”   His fork lowered and settled onto the empty cake box. “It’s not just .. my regular..skill? Like recovering faster than others and stuff like that.. but it’s my aura too.  I’m pretty sure I’m not like anyone else, and I’ve been thinking about my …..well.. my ..birth mother.  Wondering maybe.. who she is.. maybe she’s .. not a human..” Gon never allowed himself to really admit these things, but here he was, spilling it all to Runa-san and Mood.

Silence settled on the room, except for the sound of Mood chewing on a large bite of quiche. Mood caught Runa’s eye and they both stared at one another.

“Doesn’t mean your worth any less.” Mood remarked after finally swallowing. “Doesn’t matter where you come from or what you are. What you do with your life is what matters and what you strive to be.”

“You mean…”  Gon blinked, thinking hard and speaking slowly,  “… like fairies?  Or.. dwarves?  Like.. they’re here.. but in a place people don’t know about?  Like deep underground?  Or the sea?  I believe in that stuff totally… but wait.  They vanished?”  The raven frowned again.  Nah. Fairies were still around for sure. He sat forward and scratched his head distractedly, elbows resting on his knees.  What could she mean?  All those books.  She was looking for them.  The vanished dudes.  Hmmmm. The world.. bigger than we know it.  Runa was giving him a riddle of some kind.  She was trying to tell him something without telling him. Some kinda secret. 

He sat up quickly and glanced back at her. “Are you in danger Runa?”  His aura spread quickly, wide and intense.. scoping the area out with aggression.. only finding that landlord person and a few mice. “I don’t care if you’ve sworn to secrecy.. tell me right now, are you in some kind of trouble?  If it’s that Harvey guy so help me..”

Runa watched the wheels turn in his head and then settle on an absurd idea.

She set the book in her lap and very carefully and deliberately turned his face to hers.

“I promise you I’m not in danger, despite my looks, I have a very good sense of danger and I know I’m not in any.” She released his face and picked up her book again and flipped until she found a hand drawn map. “You don’t wander around in crumbling ruins on your own without a good sense of your surroundings. Besides, I’m at homebase. I picked this place because Afumi is cheap and easy to please by sending him rare books and it’s also under the radar because Afumi keeps it that way. Homebase is safe.”

“Mm.”  He was running low on Jenni too.  Pretty soon, he’d have to start dipping into his line of credit but no big deal.  This was an emergency.  It really sucked that she was attacked like that.  Just.. out of nowhere.  For his own peace of mind, Gon needed to figure this crap out and put an end to it.   “What were ya researching?”  He hoped that maybe he could take her mind off the shitty situation and help her relax a little.  He was kinda stressed too.   Gon glanced at the towel and visualized Runa in it. ‘not the time man.’  She was on the bed and in little moon pajama pants and so damn attractive though.   Gon closed his eyes in an attempt to shut his mind up

“Islands that sink and reappear. Wanted to find one that’s been underwater for a while.” She laid back and sighed, her nerves still shot with every passing moment dragging her downwards into a dark spiral. “Before you found the trap room, what were you doing?”

“…Oh..”  Gon frowned.  She wasn’t talking about aliens.  Outside world?  The hell? Blinking, Gon shook his head a little and looked at Runa.  

“Huh?”  Not one of his best moments.

Hard choice.

“The world is bigger than we know it, there’s...more than just us here. Or at least there used to be.” Runa choose her words carefully, she was threatened at least once about sharing this knowledge. “We got our beginnings from them, and then they just vanished.”

“Anything weird..”  He muttered slowly.  Raven brows knit together and Gon brought a hand to his chin.  Hisoka didn’t seem to fit.  He was cruel for no reason, and other times helpful.  But wasn’t that just plain old insanity?   Her words struck him in a funny way.  Gon squirmed a little a blinked a few times. Something that didn’t fit in the world… “Well.. yeah.  Me.”   Golden eyes lifted to look at Runa’s.

“What do you mean?” Runa said in between bites on her second piece of cake, mismatched eyes trained intently on him.

Runa didn’t seem to hear him, which was good actually.  Gon’s painful grin dropped when she mentioned her inability to rest and alluded to dreams.  Bad ones, he was guessing.  She looked pretty worn out for sure.  And in a crappy mood.  Gon entered reluctantly, unsure of how exactly he might be of use but why not? She was inviting him in so.. no big deal. “I can’t sleep either.  Well.. I .. heh heh.. kinda passed out for a while, but now I’m just..”  The Hunter sat on the floor and leaned his back against the wall.  He shrugged and crossed his arms as a way of finishing, and noticed the bathroom light looked exactly how it did in his crazy dream. “Hey Runa?  Tell me..”  He smiled lazily, “..what were ya doin’ when I called you?  You were in a library, weren’t ya?”

She dropped herself on the bed and tossed the towel in the vague direction of the bathroom. It didn’t sail far.

“Nailed it.” Runa got comfortable. “Yeah I was in a library, doing some research. Actually it was just killing time, I don’t have any work right now and I’m just trying to  live cheap.”

“Aliens.”  Gon added somberly.  He never really gave them much thought.  He’d always just .. taken each moment as it came.  If he was training, cool.  In a jungle facing off against an ant that looked like rabbit-human hybrid…ok. Aliens were no different.  If they showed up one day, he’d do what felt right.

Runa stopped, full mental halt.

Aliens had not even come to mind. Was that possible??

“I uh..that never crossed my mind.” Runa looked pensive for a moment. “My theories which are sort of confirmed-ish, that they come from an outside world from us. There’s so much more and just people came here and they brought their language with them and we picked it up the written bit at least.”

“Saver person?”  Gon repeated with an impossible amount of pumpkin pie in his mouth.  Chewing and gulping it down, the boy frowned in confusion and then it dawned on him.   “Ooohhh like a hero!  I get it!  You save people.  Haha. Me too.”  He glanced at Runa quickly before returning his attention to the confection(s).   She was more than a Hunter and friend now. Runa-san was .. someone he was very fortunate to meet.  Mood also. Gon could tell that there was something very different about these two.  They were special, with a destiny.  He hoped to see it all play out one day.

Runa opened her mouth to correct Gon, Mood held up a hand signalling to let it go.

“So tell me about your travels, anything weird like it doesn’t fit in the world? Sort of like a puzzle piece in the wrong spot?” Runa phrased her question carefully. What she was looking for would stand out to anyone with a high perception.

“Me?  Yeah, I’m fine.  Sorry if I .. it’s late.  I just thought .. well your .. ..”  Gon cleared his throat and shifted his stance. “Are you in any pain?  Cuz if you are, then I can …”  Another throat clearing.  Those little pajama pants she wore were killing him.   “…you know.  You know? hah hah..”  Gon grinned a little wider than normal and stood there awkward as hell.

She rubbed her face, she was tired. And she couldn’t sleep. 

Everything is just awful.

“I’m...just very tired and incapable of sleeping. Dreams y’know.” She opened the door a bit wider and stepped aside. “You’re up, so we can be tired together.”

It was a paper thin cover for a desperate need for company, it was rare to have this sort of company. Normally Runa kept to herself and was social when she wanted to be. She craved it more than anything right now.
