RIP-LESS
P∆LM TRIP ‘92
When my grandfather died my freshman year of college i felt nothing. I knew that sadness would wash over me and leave a hole somewhere in my heart that would take a long time to fill. A few weeks later, it did. When I was raped my sophomore year I felt nothing. I knew that emptiness would find a home somewhere between my ribs and gnaw at my insides until I was forced to spit it out. Two years later, it did. When I finally graduated in 2014 I felt nothing. I knew that uncertainty and doubt would crush me and leave me breathless and confused. Months later, it did. When my heart was broken this past June I felt nothing. I knew that sorrow and rage would swirl in my gut and leave me doubled over in pain and anguish. A few weeks ago, it did. When Donald trump was elected president tonight, I expected to feel nothing. I was wrong. I felt it all. Sadness and emptiness and uncertainty and breathlessness and rage and sorrow. My bones are vibrating and my head is spinning and my stomach is dropping and pulling my heart down with it. I am afraid for the girls left alone with the emptiness in their ribs. I am afraid for the boy in my kindergarten class who cried for fear that his parents would be sent back to Guatemala. I am afraid for the girl who I kissed on Saturday night when we both slipped on spilt beer and fell to the ground. When fear looks me in the eye I look away. I want to run. I want to buy a one way ticket and thank my lucky stars that I have two passports. But then I think of the girls and the boy and the look in her eyes when she helped me up from the floor. I cannot abandon them, I cannot forget them, I cannot leave. It is time to embrace and love and love. It is time to fight.
