âThe titanic sank 109 years ago this morning. I think that means it is the perfect day to re-watch the movie. You know you want to join me.â
âWould you believe it if I said Iâd never actually ever seen that film?â
Name: Elijah Smith Age: 40 Sexuality: Heterosexual Gender: Male Portrayed By: James Marsden Availability: Closed
âNo, I had nothing to do with this Annie girl. I had nothing to do with any of these things. People need to stop assuming shit.â
â Background
Elijah Smith, or Eli as some people call him, is Babertonâs resident âMan of Mysteryâ. Thereâs not really much that anyone knows about him. Arriving in town just shortly before Annie Pierce went missing, he never really attracted much attention to himself. He lived quietly in a house in the center of town, alone. He made a living doing yard work, and spent most of his evenings sitting around at the bar in the Green Dove pub. People were polite and neighbourly to him, but he never really became part of the neighborhood and never really opened up to anyone. He kept his past secret and lived a quiet life. Up until Annie went missing at least.
Like a lot of people, Elijah has some skeletons in his closet. Before coming to Baberton, he faced a lot of trouble with the law. Heâd gotten involved in the gang work since running away from home as a teenager and never got caught for the longest time. That is, until the disappearance of a young girl by the name of Jane Lucas. The daughter of a wealthy business man, she was kidnapped by the gang and held for ransom. Elijah had no part in the kidnapping, but once the police showed up, everyone on site was arrested. Though Elijah was eventually cleared and released, he knew he had to get out of there. He packed up and moved to Baberton, hoping to leave the recent events behind him and start over fresh.
But of course, then Annie disappeared. The town was in shock and wanted answers. Well, not really answers. They wanted someone to point fingers at. And a mysterious man who shows up out of nowhere just before a young girl disappears is definitely worth investigating. A quick look into his history by the police and the kidnapping charges come up and Elijah was suspect number one. However, with no real motive and no evidence, the charges were dropped almost as soon as they were brought.
With the discovery of Annieâs body, suspicions were high once again and Elijah was again brought in for question. While there was still no motive and no evidence, again no charges were laid. But reputation is truly everything in a town like Baberton, and even though he is completely innocent, Elijahâs reputation was shot down before it was ever really built back up. As more young people began to disappear and show up dead, a lot of eyes did keep turning back to Elijah.
â Back to Baberton
Elijah still mostly just keeps to himself. Spends his days working and his nights at the pub and avoids any and all conversations about his past or about the Pierce case or any other case. Another people like to really push him over is Leanne Wilmington (because where did the murder weapon go?). He does his best to just keep quiet. Elijah doesnât need to accidentally say something that could make him look guilty. He largely avoids the cops and people closely involved with the case if possible, but of course that isnât always an easy thing to do. A lot of the deaths being wrapped up and cases closed as Daisy Ramsey and Jamie Kirk were outed as killers didnât do too much to help him honestly.
Elijah spent a lot of time at the Green Dove pub as always, talking to Evan Johnson, the owner, who is arguably his only real friend. Or⊠was. Evan himself was killed a while ago now and Elijah still goes to the pub most nights even though itâs so hard to sit there and not be able to chat with Evan.
Even when Annieâs case was closed, people still seemed to be out for his blood. There are a few cases that seem to not quite be as open and shut as they would seem on paper and people do like a good conspiracy theory. Elijahâs heard it all to be honest. The police are still keeping a close watch on him, it sometimes seems, and heâs quite paranoid. It would be easy to up and leave but that would make him look worse, wouldnât it? Besides⊠why should he be driven away when he hasnât even done anything? All he wants is a quiet life in a small town, to mind his own business and get on with it. He spends a lot of time worrying about whose murder theyâre going to try and pin on him next. In a town like Baberton, it seems your reputation never comes clean again⊠even if what they accused you of is proven false.
â Whatâs His Secret?
Elijah had a younger sister who was killed in a fire not too long before he left home for good. He feels guilty that he couldnât get her out of the house in time and save her. Sometimes he muses to himself that, despite the charges hovering over his head on a daily basis, his sister was the only girl whose life he was ever truly responsible for. He doesnât like to talk about her as it upsets him and barely anybody knows he ever had a sister.
He secretly visits the graves/memorials of the young female victims of the serial killers, at night when he doesnât think anyone will see him, as he doesnât want to look guilty. Even though he had no connection to these girls, he still feels bad for what happened to them since, like his sister, their lives were cut entirely too short and he hopes that one day, beyond just clearing his name, they will find all of the bastards that took these girlâs lives from them. It might seem like a strange thing for him to do but he started and canât seem to stop.
He keeps up with the girl who the gang kidnapped - Jane Lucas - online, just to know that sheâs safe and well. Itâs a little stalker-y, he knows that, but he canât seem to help it as he feels guilty that he wasnât able to stop them kidnapping her at all. He never had any part in anything to do with her and he hated what the others did once he found out, and after the cops let him go he was quite vocal about his anger, and for that reason alone he likes to keep his head really down, as he doesnât need ghosts from his past showing up to haunt him. One reason he came here at all is so they wouldnât find him.
