âThatâs not even two per person.â
âItâs more than enough for people that are only home and awake a few hours everyday.âÂ
jason-aker-nv:
âHow many dogs have you brought home?â
âTotal? I mean, we have 3 right now.â
jason-aker-nv:
âHeâs more of a roommate than anything.â
âSure you donât want a second roommate? Iâve got an adorable terrier at the shelter that my boyfriend will kill me...or him... if I bring home.âÂ
jason-aker-nv:
âOh no, yeah. I definitely am. One of the worst, actually. I just do things like this as penance.â
âI donât believe you. I bet you even own a dog.âÂ
jason-aker-nv:
âNo, yeah. You did good. Seriously, Iâm sure people are just mean, and selfish.â
âSadly, Iâm afraid you might be right. But youâre not, right?âÂ
jason-aker-nv:
âAre you kidding? That was my favorite part.â
âI heard once that you have to get peopleâs attention within your first sentence when doing this sort of thing.âÂ
jason-aker-nv:
âNot⌠at all. You probably intimidate people.â
âYou think I shouldnât lead with the abandonment fact?âÂ
jason-aker-nv:
âIâm sorry. Um, I have some cash on me but I could always write you a check and bring it by your office too.â
âThat would be great! Seriously - you are the first person to even stop all day, I was starting to think I was invisible.âÂ
jason-aker-nv:
âSeriously? Thatâs harsh.â
âI know. Itâs awful. I see it every year.âÂ
âExcuse me, I know you have a lot of charities to consider donating to this holiday, but did you know that the amount of abandoned dogs is 30% higher after Christmas than any other time of the year?â

They easily un-tuck the many-eyed dog from under their arm, placing it into the womanâs arms for her to care for. Theyâre not entirely sure what sheâll be able to do, given that theyâve never actually seen a dog like this one ( truth be told, theyâre not sure itâs a dog at all ), but given where they are, theyâre optimistic that sheâll figure something out, at least. Possibly.Â
âThanks!â they say, their seemingly cheerful attitude unchanging. âOh, if it makes a difference, I found it wandering near the⌠you know. The dog parkâwhich doesnât exist, obviously, but if it did, I wouldâve found it near there.â
Effie took the dog, scratching underneath its chin. It seemed calm enough, which she was grateful for as it was difficult to know what you were getting into with walk-ins.Â
âOh,â she said hesitantly when they mentioned the dog park. Her boyfriend liked to make jokes about people that believed in the park, but she wasnât sure what to believe. âWell, this pup certainly exists.â she said with a slight smile. âSure you donât want to adopt?â she asked, knowing she didnât have any open spaces for the dog in the back.

They look over as theyâre greeted, a wide ( too wide, as per usual ) smile plastered onto their face. âDo you take walk-ins?â they asked, gesturing with one hand to the small dog tucked under their arm in an almost handbag-esque fashion. âI found this little guy wandering around and I think itâŚâ They trail off, glancing again at the animal, which possesses several more eyes than what it typical for the average dog. âMight need some help. Maybe.â
They had found it wandering near the dog park ( which does not actually exist, of course, theyâre quick to interject ) which was particularly unusual, considering that dogs werenât permitted on the premises. Itâs that, rather than the state of the animal itself, that theyâre most confused about, but thereâs no worry in their expressionâor in their mind, for that matter. Theyâre not typically one to worry, especially over things that might unsettle the average person. Even the apocalypse, probably, some have said after having encountered them, but of course they pay little mind to the rumors going around.
Mysteries are half the fun of living, after all, and keeping secrets is much more entertaining than sharing them.
âI think itâs a stray,â they continue, glancing back over at her with the same ( vaguely ) unsettlingly-wide smile stretched across their face. âPotentially.âÂ
Effie watched the being at they spoke, quickly finding that she would rather focus on the dog than their disconcerting smile. It made her think of the handgun she had stashed in the back that her boyfriend forced her to keep here. She had no idea if she could ever use it even if she needed to, and even less confidence that it would even be able to harm something with that smile.Â
âOf course Iâll take it, thanks for bringing them in.â she said with a slight smile of her own, holding out her hands to take the pup.Â

Effie stared upwards as she listened to the heartbeat coming through the hollow tube of her stethoscope. She frowned as she listened, also noticing a crack in the ceiling plaster that she was fairly confident hadnât been there the day before.Â
âSorry buddy, you definitely have a murmur.â she said softly, removing stethoscope from her ears. âBut it will be okay. Itâs just a small one.â she added as the hound mix looked up at her. âI promise.â she added, leaning down to kiss the top of his head. Her boyfriend made fun of her whenever he heard her talking to animals as if they could understand her, but she worked alone most of the time and she was still sure it benefited the animals as well.Â
âCome on, letâs get you back to your room for now.â Effie said to the dog, stepping away from the table and motioning for him to follow her. She was making sure he was comfortable in one of the large cage areas in the back of her practice when she heard the front door open. Casey had brought a stray he had found to her the previous night and she was hoping whoever was entering was the owner, or at least a potential future owner for the lost pup.Â
âHi, can I help you?â she asked as she walked into the small lobby area.Â
