I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where nearly half of the population is Afro-descendent. During my childhood, I spent summer vacation in the black neighborhood where my father grew up. His mother and siblings still lived there but my father’s family were the only white people around.

Because of this, I had the opportunity to experience black culture in many forms: Jongo (an African dance), Umbanda (an Afro-Brazilian religion) and Samba. I’ve carried these memories and experiences through my life.

ESPACES MÉMORIELS Photographer GUILLAUME AMAT - “Memorial Landscapes” The idea of this photographic work on the centennial and the memory of the 14-18 war is to establish a link, a bridge between the current visible sites and pictures taken there 100 years. » I walk through the remains of the past and the wounds are still living in a time that I did not know, is part of my memory. So is the base space and time . Here, before, now also and the remember becomes a memory.  » When traveling in these sites, Arras, Verdun etc, It’s strange, we do not know very well, we have the feeling of being in a place of memory and sometimes in an amusement park. A sign indicates the trenches, empty and lumpy landscapes that look like golf courses.
