Extra-ordinary gifts

This is my journey. I am the mother of three beautiful human beings: Emma, Dylan and Kai.

When Emma was 6 months old I got pregnant with twins, there is no history of twins on either side of the families and that is why I call it "Extraordinary Gifts". When Dylan and Kai were born I was told at the hospital "Twin A" had Myelomeningocele - I had no idea what the doctor was saying so I thanked him.

They wrapped the twins and brought them to me, I thought they were identical and beautiful. I see Michael (father and husband at the time), looking distraught, I'm oblivious, they tell me in more layman terms there is a problem with "Twin A" - Dylan, they had to transfer him to Miami Children's Hospital. I get to hold his hand, and tell him I love him before he is rushed away.

I go to my room confused, my body is shaking from the effects of anaesthesia. I got an incredible sense of peace and strength and at that moment I knew everything would be alright. I hold my other newborn "Twin B" - Kai and try to get some rest...

There are many ways to tell a story. Photography is the way I chose to tell my story. As I take pictures and snapshots of my kids, I have no plans, I simply react to what I see.

The photos you see here are a few of many. I photographed them since birth and have used whatever camera was handy at the time.

When I look at the photos I have taken, I see all kinds of different stories, it's all in the editing.

In the end what I am most fascinated with the photographic medium is the element of surprise.

I see Dylan from being a real happy baby to growing into a young man who is quite introverted and alone.

Kai who used to cry a lot has become an adventurer, who is not scared of living life.

I love how it is all ongoing.

All I know is that

When Dylan and Kai were born I had to learn a lot, not only about having twins, triplets actually because Emma was 18 months, but all about Spina Bifida. I had to learn about this complex disability which is all about the central nervous system. There is Hydrocephalus - neurology, urology, possible learning disabilities, brain anomalies and so on.

Yes, I did feel overwhelmed but I had no time to ponder and wonder, I am fortunate for I love medicine, hospitals and the human body. So I learned.

Dylan is the ideal patient as he is absolutely calm and has an incredible threshold for pain. He gives me strength!
