Taxian-jun convinces himself that Chu-fei is pregnant (he's not), partially because his brain found that loophole to treat Chu Wanning with the kindness he craves to.

Chu Wanning watches him, pitying his desperation, but never telling him the truth. He thinks maybe it would be better if he could give Mo Ran the child he wants... The flower seems to weaken when Mo Ran thinks of building a family with him...

When Chu Wanning asks for tools to make something for their child, Taxian-jun actually agrees, with no trace of the paranoia he would have held before.

I just want Chu Wanning sitting along in Red Lotus Pavilion, the light fading as he makes toys for a child that doesn't exist. That he wishes so badly could exist if it would save Mo Ran.

His heart stutters as he shows them all to Mo Ran, who gives him a smile, his dimples deep, as the feared emperor plays with a windup frog, rambling about how much their children will love it.

Years later, at Nanping, Taxian-jun reveals he'd saved them all. They're a bit worn with the years, but under Chu Wanning's talented fingers they run as good as new.

Taxian-jun grouses when he finds the spirits playing with them, but eventually, he lets them, smiling as he shows them how each one works.

Maybe sometimes he brings them down to the kids, explaining with a puffed-out chest that This Venerable One's wife made these and that they better respect his gift... But then as soon as he's done, he's down in the dirt giddy as he shows them that if you do this and this, you can make 'em fight
