“Everyone knew it was you,” she laughed, her cheeks coloring as they blatantly flirted with one another. “I’ve never been much of a cat person. I’d like to be enlightened as to what makes me so lethal.” 

“I thought I was bein’ slick. And thought she was just being a mean old bat for no reason.” He shook his head, laughing with her, his eyes meeting hers, giving her a playful wink. “I’d tell you, but we happen to be in a public place, and I don’t think it’s gentlemanly to talk ‘bout a lady like that with people around to listen in.”

“Be nice to your siblings, listen to your mama, don’t pick roses for me from Mrs. McCormick’s garden. It’ll only lead you to trouble.” she smirked, tilting her head just to the side in order to get a better look at him. “You flatter me, Colton Calhoun. Angel is a strong term. –Lethal? How so? Color me curious.” 

“--Shit. D’you think she knew I used to pick from her garden? No wonder she hated me.” He smirked back at her, giving her a wink. “It’s not flattery if it’s the truth, Annie Wilkes. --Don’t you know? Curiosity killed the cat, darlin’.”

“Maybe I’m the Ghost of Christmas Past and this is all an illusion,” Annie laughed, wiggling her eyebrows. What memories she was supposed to show him, she wasn’t sure, considering most of anything to do with the past involved her. She took another sip of her drink before leaning her chin to rest in the palm of her hand as she stared up at him. That stupid grin –it’d never not make her stomach flip. “Yeah, two drunk girls, one of them being pint sized. We’re real dangerous.” 

“Oh, are you? And what lessons would ya have to teach me?” He chuckled, his heart warm as she smiles at him - she’s always managed to get a reaction out of him, even now, broken up, years later. “They should rename it to Angel of Christmas past,” he can’t help but say, grinning broadly at her. He crouched down slightly so he’s not towering over her. “--Very dangerous. Especially the pint-sized one. She’s just lethal.”

“Why’s that, Grinch?” After a moment or two, Annie finally chose to sit down, carefully seating herself on one of the high barstools. “No ghosts have visited you in the middle of the night to show you the error of your ways?” She looked down at the glass in front of her, then to him, and took a sip. “It’s the same as every year… Di and I are gonna get drunk off spiked hot chocolate eventually.” 

“Who knows? It’s been a long year. I guess I’m just worn out lately. Been busy... y’know, helping Ma and Pop over at the farm, then being here until all hours of the night to tend to the town drunks.” He chuckled. “--Nope, not yet. But it’s still early, ain’t it? Here’s to hopin’ I get a visit and learn my lesson before it’s too late.” Letting out a laugh, he shook his head at her. “Well, if y’all end up gettin’ arrested for public indecency or somethin’, y’know who to call. Hamilton’s always been nothin’ but trouble, and the two of you together?” He whistled, giving her an amused grin. “Just dangerous.”

“Figured you could use some company,” Annie murmured, glancing around the bar. There were only a couple other patrons besides her, all seemingly wanting a break from the holiday cheer going on outside. “It must be a real bummer that y’can’t celebrate the festival with the rest of us, huh?” She leaned against the bar, not quite willing to take a seat just yet. “Rum n’ Coke, please.” 

Colton sidled over to the counter where Annie stood, giving her a friendly smile. “I could, actually. It’s been Deadsville all day.” He rested his hands on the edge of the counter, crinkling his nose. “I think Morgan and I might go in a couple of days, but... I don’t know, haven’t really been in the Christmas spirit,” he murmured with a slight shrug, crouching down slightly so he’s not towering over her. “--You got it.” He nodded, going to make her drink, gone for a moment and placing the drink in front of her, setting down a coaster first. “What ‘bout you? Havin’ fun out there?”

“Alright, you dragged me out - what’re we gonna do now? --I’m really not in the holly jolly Christmas mood, Mo’.” Colton was being a bit of a grinch this year. Maybe because he was older, maybe because the last few weeks, he’d been working 16 hours days. He also hadn’t slept well in the same amount of time, and exhausted didn’t really begin to cover how tired he was.

“--Fancy seein’ you here.” The bar’s been mostly empty all evening - probably thanks to the festival going on. He’s wiped down every surface of the bar so many times, it’s practically glistening. It’s probably the most clean The Whiskey Barrel’s ever been in the last three decades; there used to be a permanent layer of dust before Colton wiped the entire bar clean out of boredom. He was taking a break, leaning against the back of the counter as he watched a game, when Annie walked in - he knew it was Annie, even before he turned to look at her. He always knew. “What can I get ya?” @dcrlins​

“Wouldn’t you rather go hang out with Annie or someone other than your ol’ man?” Thomas grumbled quietly to himself, but he was always happy to spend more time with Diana, so he couldn’t be too upset. “Ice carvin’? Alright, we can try it. What should we carve the ice into? A snowman?”

“I think Annie’s actually on a date,” Diana replied with a smile. “And Morgan’s with the Calhoun’s, last I checked. So it’s just you and me, old man.” She reaches up, giving her dad’s cheek a little pinch. “--A snowman? I don’t know, that’s a little boring. Maybe something a little more ambitious. Like a swan or.... an elf!”

Jamie threw his head back and laughed. “I’m happy to hang out with you any day of the year.” He smiled at her, the smile making his eyes sparkle. “Nah, Morgan is working and Isaac is… somewhere. So I think I can disappear for a bit without them even noticing. –You’re the one with the dad who might kill me for taking you away.” 

“Don’t go flatterin’ me now,” she replies with a laugh. “Because I might hold you to that. You’ll never be rid of me.” She crinkles her nose slightly, feeling a little guilty about the fact that she’s been.... canoodling with him, when he’s the cousin of one of her best friends. She’s not sure how Morgan would take it if she found out, but Diana’s not sure she wants her to ever know. Besides, she and Jamie are totally casual. Scratching an itch on occasion. Nothing more. “My dad’s harmless, he wouldn’t hurt a fly. Besides... we’re only taking a walk. That’s all.” And she might convince him to go to her car for a quick make-out session, if the mood struck, but it was totally innocent. Thomas wouldn’t know a thing.

“Yes, finally. I’ve been looking forward to it since our birthday. Actually, probably longer than that. ‘Sides, Christmas is a state of mind, not just a day of the year. ‘The bell still rings for me as it does for all those who truly believe.’ And I believe. –I think the last half of the year always flies by, but January to May takes an eternity.”

“You sound like one of those cards they have at the grocery store. --I don’t know, feels like this whole year flew by. I’m sorta glad it’s about to be over, though. I’m ready for a new year. A change... somethin’.”

“--Hm? Oh, I’m... fine, Tommy, how’re you?” Elizabeth gave him a distracted, forced smile, before she glances away, looking around over his shoulder. She bites her lip before looking back to him. “Sorry, the girls set me up on a blind date and we were supposed to meet up twenty minutes ago, but he hasn’t shown up. I shouldn’t have even agreed in the first place.”

“Okay, girls, I’ll be hanging around here, just let me know when you are ready to go.” Thomas wasn’t big on the festivals in town, but he always tried his best and when Delilah or Diana would say something about going, he could never say no to them.

C’mon, let’s go get some cider and we can walk around and find somethin’ for you to do. Whatcha feel like? Goin’ sledding? Making a gingerbread house? Oh, there’s an ice carvin’ station, we should try that too!!”

“Can you believe it’s finally Christmas? I mean, really here? And somehow we even have a white Christmas this year! In Alabama? I think this is the most Christmasy-Christmas ever.”

"Finally? I think it got here way too soon. Just last week it was November, wasn’t it? Feels like I blinked and now it’s suddenly Christmas. Really caught me by surprise this year, and now it’s goin’ to be a whole new year and I just ain’t ready for it.”
