he   enrages   her   in   a   way   she   cannot   fathom.    true   enough   that   aurane   had   grated   her   nerves   too,    had   often   avoided   confrontation   and   not   spoken   to   her   in   times   of   need        –        but   whatever   it   is   about   aemond   that   unsettles   her   and   enrages   her,    only   seems   to   worsen   when   they   are   upset   with   one   another.    it   had   been   something   about   his   tone;    something   about   the   way   he   had   questioned   her   as   a   mother,    raising   her   child        –     their   child;    his   brother's   son,    a   delicate   chaos   of   connection.    it   matters   little   now,    she   supposes,    in   the   grand   scheme   of   it   all,    ciaran   is   fine.    resting   comfortably   and   asleep   in   his   own   chambers,    no   further   cause   for   concern.    the   door   to   his   chambers   shuts   softly,    her   jaw   clenched   as   wintry   eyes   settle   onto   aemond's   face   in   the   dim   light   of   the   hall        –       a   heavy   exhale   in   answer   to   his   presence,    unspoken   resurgence   of   annoyance   as   she   turns   to   take   a   few   steps   away   from   where   the   most   innocent   of   them   all   rests. 

and   yet,    even   as   she   steps   away,    her   hand   curls   'round   his   wrist,    dragging   him   along   with   him        –        back   to   their   own   quiet   comfort.    sansa   is   nothing   if   not   a   picture   of   perfect   sensibility   in   the   hall,    careful,    quiet,    measured   steps.    until   another   set   of   doors   is   shut,    and   they   are   alone.    her   fingers   move   from   his   wrist   as   she   turns   to   look   at   him,    hands   moving   to   grasp   into   the   fabric   of   his   doublet,    pulling   him   closer   even   as   she   rises   onto   her   tiptoes.            ❝    do   not   ever   question   me   in   such   a   way.    ❞            

her   mouth   grazes   his   half   a   second   later,    before   nimble   digits   are   working   away   at   the   buttons   of   his   doublet,    kissing   him   in   a   fury.            ❝    it   is   not   your   place.    ❞            but   even   as   she   scolds   him,    her   fingers   are   pulling   the   fabric   from   his   chest,    lips   and   teeth   moving   across   his   jaw,    kissing   and   nipping   in   equal   measure.

compliments,    as   a   whole   aren't   her   strong   suit        –        though   perhaps   a   more   fair   observation   might   say   that   speaking   doesn't   particularly   come   easily   to   the   sellsword.    surrounded   by   sycophants   and   honeyed   words   all   her   life,    all   fen   had   taken   from   her   time   within   one   of   r'hllor's   red   temples   had   been   the   training   that   made   her   deadly,    not   any   ounce   of   capable   silken   tongue.    she   imagines,    in   some   way,    perhaps,    that   must   be   part   of   her   allure        –     part   of   whatever   it   is   that   draws   aegon's   interest.    so   keen   and   used   to   hearing   whatever   it   was   he   wanted,    all   for   the   hope   of   a   blessing   or   a   boon.    her   nose   wrinkles,    an   inhaled   breath   that   is   all   distinctively   him;    ale   and   dragon's   breath,    a   smokey   underbelly   of   cinders   and   something   almost   sweet.    her   fingers   still   from   where   she   is   absentmindedly   sharpening   a   blade,    head   turning   just   so   to   offer   the   very   vision   of   attention   he   craves        –        sockets   void   of   anything,    and   yet   fen   knows   this   room   inside   and   out.    knows   aegon   just   as   well   as   she   does   her   own   hand.

she   cannot   determine   why   she   feels   so   inclined   to   care.    of   every   man   who   has   come   to   winterfell   to   play   suitor,    prince   aurane   has   certainly   been   the   least   enthusiastic.    the   least   enthused   or   interested   in   anything   she   has   to   say,    and   more   interested   in   whichever   winter   wine   or   ale   cregan   has   cracked   for   the   day.    not   as   if   it   matters   much   either   way,    she   imagines   it   is   only   a   matter   of   time   before   her   cousin   tells   the   greens   precisely   where   the   ought   to   stick   their   marriage   proposal,    given   that   he'd   spent   some   weeks   treating   with   queen   rhaenyra's   eldest   son,    who'd   at   least   been   kind   enough   to   play   at   being   interested   in   a   conversation   whilst   sober.    aurane,    sansa's   determined,    isn't   really   capable   of   such        –        and   if   he   is,    he's   doing   rather   poorly   at   proving   it        –        goblet   after   goblet,    flirting   with   the   maids,    treating   his   time   in   winterfell   like   some   grand   bachelor's   escape   and   not   with   an   ounce   of   seriousness   for   the   situation   that   lingers in   the   air   down   south. 

it   is   that   reason   alone   that   she   finds   herself   intrigued,    she   supposes,    when   the   realization   settles   that   for   once,    he   is   sipping   upon   water   and   not   wine        –        perhaps   a   matter   of   her   own   doing   given   how   she'd   seen   to   dumping   an   entire   carafe   out   a   window   a   few   nights   ago.    it   is   perhaps   that   simple,    a   chain   of   events   so   easily   in   line,    and   not   the   fact   that   there   has   been   a   burgeoning   something   between   them   since   the   very   moment   he'd   arrived;    wherein   annoyance   had   intermingled   with   curiosity,    and   settled   into   a   feeling   in   the   pit   of   her   stomach   she   couldn't   rid   herself   of.    he   is   not   meant   to   be   seen   in   such   a   humane   light,    not   meant   to   be   considered   for   the   sad   downturn   of   his   lips   nor   the   quiet   ache   sansa   is   all   but   certain   she   can   see   in   the   light   color   of   his   eyes. 

for   once   she   is   glad   they   are   alone,    that   cregan   trusts   her   judgment   well   enough   to   know   sansa   would   not   cause   herself   ruin        –        and   that   any   man,    prince   or   not,       would   know   better   given   the   way   lady   is   always   at   her   heels.    for   once,    sansa   exhales   a   breath   from   her   side   of   the   library's   settee,    untucking   her   hand   from   beneath   her   chin   as   wintry   eyes   flick   to   where   lady   is   settled   beneath   her   feet,    to   where   aurane   sits   only   a   few   feet   away   at   the   opposite   end. 

❝    no,    i   would   imagine   it   isn't.    ❞            book   closed   softly,    her   dress   ruffles   as   she   shifts   on   the   cushions,    moving   her   body   weight   from   the   arm   of   the   settee   to   the   middle,    until   she   is   carefully   leant   across   a   dividing   line   that   had   yet   to   be   trespassed,    and   trailing   soft,    porcelain   fingers   across   the   back   of   his   hand.    if   there   is   anyone   who   understands,    it   is   she;    daughter   of   the   uncle   who   would   have   seen   the   current   lord   of   winterfell   deposed   entirely   and   brought   to   ruin.    daughter   of   a   man   who   did   not   hold   a   singular   ounce   of   love   within   his   heart   for   her.    though   she   doesn't   know   which   pieces   aurane   determines   of   his   past   to   be   unhappy,    she   can   imagine   well   enough   how   uneasy   it   is   to   be   marked   as   the   odd   man   out        –       if   only   by   so   much   as   the   color   of   his   hair.            ❝    do   you   want   to   speak   of   it?    ❞            

her   voice   is   tender,    nimble   fingers   threading   to   bring   their   palms   together        –        a   momentary   squeeze   of   acknowledgement   before   sansa's   hand   is   slipping   away   and   returning   to   her   own   side   as   if   it   had   never   existed   there   at   all.            ❝    you   needn't   feel   inclined.    ❞
