It's not weird at all! Pendulum readings are a type of divination where something, typically a gem or even just a rock, is tied to the end of a string or chain. Yes or no questions can then be asked, and the pendulum will swing one way or the other to answer. As for canon calls, it's sort of just placing something out there so the people from your timeline who might want to find you, can! They can include identifying memories, or they can just be "I'm x looking for y!" I hope this helped!
