Hey, guys. Name's Char, and I'm a Fire Bro. This is my little brother, Winnie. He's an Ice Bro. ▌Do you know why you were called that? “I dunno... Apparently, it’s the name of some distant relative or something...?”

▌Have any abilities or powers? “Yup! I trained to be a Fire Bro, which means I can create and, to some small degree, control fire. It’s pretty cool--ironic pun intended.”

{Er, yeah... And, um, I’m trained as an Ice Bro, so...I can freeze stuff. So that’s...um...?}

“It’s cool, too. Let’s go for ‘unironic pun’ there.”

▌What’s your eye colour? “Amber!”

{Mine are blue... Yeah, a common one...}

▌How about your hair colour? “Auburn!” He took off his helmet, showing off his military-issued mowhawk/buzzcut ‘do with a grin. “Pretty sweet, huh?”

{Um, mine’s brown... Should, I, uh...?} He took off his to show the mop of plain but neatly kept--if flattened by helmet use--head of hair.}

▌Have you any family members? “Well, we sorta have a dad...or we had a dad, but I don’t think any of us think of our relationship with each other like that anymore... It’s cool! My little bro here’s got a husband and two precious little boys, heheh!”

▌Oh? What about pets? “Not me, but Kam apparently got the kids an ice chomp puppy.”

“Well, I really hate seeing people punished for not fitting someone’s expectations... I mean, it’s just... Dad never really liked Winnie all that much, ‘cause he was never exactly...what you’d call ‘manly’... He was always pushing him to toughen up, but...that just wasn’t who he was...or ever would be...y’know...?”

▌Do you have any hobbies/activities you like to do? “I like building model houses in my town time.”

▌Ever hurt anyone before? “Well...I guess if you count military training, but that’s kinda planned, y’know. You’re sorta agreeing to try hurting each other or something.”

▌What kind of animal are you? “...Um, I’m not sure if our breed of koopa has a name, beyond the different forms of training...”

“No, no... Someone tried spreading that one around, but I don’t think it stuck...”

▌Name some of your worst habits. “Heh... Sometimes, I forget not everyone’s as comfortable talking about practically everything as I am... Sometimes, I’ll be chatting with someone and see that weird look on their face, and I know, ‘OK, gotta draw the line there...’”

{Ummm... I-I dunno... Some people say I’m too affectionate sometimes, but... Am I really? My family’s fine with it... Kam, the kids... You’re fine with it, right, bro?}

“Well, yeah... We’re used to it.”

▌Do you look up to anyone at all? Both smile and point to each other...at which Winnie looks completely taken aback.

“Heehee... I just love how much compassion you’re always so full of, bro! It’s a big inspiration, y’know?”

▌Do you go to school? “Nope. we both finished regular school, and I finished military training and dragged Winnie outta Darkland before he could before he could get any kinda further education back there.”

▌Do you ever want to marry and have kids one day? “Heheh... Winnie’s got me beat there... Me? ...Eh, I wouldn’t mind that kinda lifestyle for myself one day. But I’m in no rush.”

▌Do you have any fanboys/fangirls? {Heehee... Does my Kam count?}

▌What are you most afraid of? “Well... To be honest...the possibility of failing to protect the people I love...”

▌What do you usually wear? “Eh, the usual stuff for guys of our training. Shell and helmet that are red on me, light blue on Winnie. Then I also wear a blue vest and black shoes, while he wears a red vest and brown shoes.”

▌Do you love someone? “Well, if you just mean love in general, we love each other, and the rest of our family.”

▌When was the last time you wet yourself? “Eh...heheheheh... Funny story from first grade--I was playing around on the monkey bars, and I guess maybe in hindsight, I was getting a little too reckless and...well, it’s sorta complicated... Winnie, your turn!”

The proud uncle held his phone eagerly to the heir’s face, showing a picture oftwo koopa children with an ice chomp puppy. “Real cuties, aren’t they?” He swiped the display, changing the picture to the same kids piled on a very content Ice Bro. “Little tykes turned 3 this past spring.” Another swipe, and it was a family photo, showing the two kids and Ice Bro. with a Magikoopa.

Junior smiled as he looked at the picture the fire bros was showing him on his phone. “Heh, that’s nice. Uh… well, anyway… Enjoy the break, okay?” he said, smiling. “I better go check if no one has called me because, well, I would be in troubles if I’m caught here… heheh!” the koopa prince said to then run out of the place. “Nice to meet ya, again!” he waved.

“Well, to be honest, our old man did try to get my bro into military academy after me a while back, but I put a stop to that,” explained Char. “Winnie in combat…?” HIs tone and expression alone cried out that this was not a pretty mental image.

“Y’know…you’re lucky to have such a close bond with your dad, kid…” The Fire Bro. gave him a small, melancholy smile.

“Heh, really?… I’m sorry you didn’t have a nice relationship with your dad…” he replied, surprised to hear such story. “At least you and your brother are fine now, aren’t you?” he asked, offering a smile. “Um… say… why don’t you take a break? if anyone says anything, I’ll explain it was my decision, okay?”

Char smiled right back. He’d never really interacted with Bowser Jr. before; he’d only seen passing. So he’d never really been too quick to judge him. Now for the first time, he could actually get to know the kid and make a better assessment.

“Haha, sounds great, little buddy. To be honest your dad does kinda intimidate me; he’s just got that kinda image…” he chuckled. “I’m Corporal McCoy, by the way, but…you can just call me Char. Y’know, if you wanna be less formal.”

Junior smiled and nodded. “Alright, Char! I’m Bowser Jr as you know, prince and son of King Bowser.” he said, smiling. “I’m gonna try to talk to him and get this fixed soon…” the koopa prince said, nodding. “I think it’s sad when families are not together… I would feel bad if I couldn’t see papa because I had a lot of work…” the heir added.

Char chuckled softly. “Frankly, kid, I’d love the chance to take time off and hang with my bro and nephews, but…I can’t ever seem to find anyone to switch shifts with anymore these days,” he admitted sheepishly.

He smiled, briefly glancing down fondly at his phone again before looking back at the crown prince.

“Uh… I see…” the small prince said, looking a bit concerned. “… You know, why don’t you try asking papa to let you have a free day? I mean, I know he’s usually harsh with everyone but one day between all the hard days of work you’ve given to us wouldn’t hurt once in a while, would it? Perhaps… I should try to convince him… You know, he always listens to me… Heheheh~” Junior giggled, smiling at Char.

Char instinctively stood straight to attention as soon as he heard that voice. It was, after all, one of a large handful of them he’d been trained to respond to at the drop of a hat.

“Oh, Prince Bowser!” He saluted with his free hand. “Hey there… Nothing to report. …Nothing’s happened that’s worth reporting all day…or week, for that matter…” The boredom was evident in his tone.

“…” Junior raised an eyebrow, staring at him. “… Wow, for some reason I doubt someone can’t believe you after such tone…” he said, smiling. “So literally you are bored… Why don’t you take a break? Don’t you have someone to take on your position for a while?” For being a prince, Junior sure was a nosy one. He did enjoy to spy on minions from time to time, having fun and looking at what they did, though it was rare for him to delate some to his father.

It was a rather slow day around the troop ground, so everyone was more or less doing their own thing. This included one Fire Bro. corporal. In the otherwise empty corridor, Cpl. Char McCoy leaned leisurely against one of the support pillars, chuckling fondly at something on the screen of his smartphone.

Due to his focus being on that, Char didn’t notice Bowser Jr. enter the area.

“You guys really work hard, uh?” he teased, smiling at them.
