Hmm, that depends. I personally LOVE snails. I don’t recommend rabbit snails, they ate all my plants aside from the anubias and moss...Go with nerite snails, they are great algae eaters! Ramshorns are very colorful, but breed too easily.
Are shrimps a lot of work or expensive also what types do you recommend for people who want to put fourth some effort but not too much
Cherry shrimp are always a great choice. Hardier than your average hobby shrimp, but they still enjoy pristine water quality. http://www.planetinverts.com/Red%20Cherry%20Shrimp.html
We went to the LCBO yesterday and I bought a little crystal skull vodka (like 320 ml?) and made my husband drink the contents so I can plant it today. I’m such a nerd:p Flora: Glosso, rotala, weaping moss Substrate: white sand Fauna: red ramshorn snail

Any tips on how to make the light bulb terrariums? Like how to prep the bulb so it's snail/shrimp/fish friendly?
I would def advise against fish. Never fish. They will die, even if you put just one. Snail and shrimp are fine (not ghost shrimp). Try to only limit 2 snails, one of each or two shrimp max.That said, the best thing to do is keep real plants in there and let it cycle with distilled water. I never had to cycle my water because half of it is from established fish tanks already. Good luck!
I used to make light bulb terrariums and sold a couple of them, even! But the days of hollowing actual light bulbs are behind me because lazy. One night, I decided to see if I can make aquariums with the same idea Left: Weeping moss, “giant” baby tears, flame moss, & eleocharis acicularis “mini“. 1 ramshorn snail. Sand substrate Right: Staurogyne repens, lilaeopsis brasiliensis and weeping moss. 1 horned nerite snail. Fluval plant stratum. Maintenance is 1/2 water change with a turkey baster (lol) once every other day. Lighting is a mixture of natural indirect sunlight and my desk lamp. Everything here is about a week old. If it survives a month, I may add 1 shrimp to the mix.

I ended up buying the brother of the fish that jumped out not long ago. I keep the water lower and keep a lid on when I go to sleep. Hopefully no more jumps!
tank update 03/10/15 10% water change, 2 more rabbit snails added to 5g. Hooray for keeping those alive and my halfmoon not harassing them! Shrimp is fine as well, but I don't see him very often:/ (The yellow/light green fuzzy thing is moss but unsure what kind)

One of my boys jumped out of their bowl and my cat found his corpse. So much for thinking floaters will deter that kind of behavior. Going to get covers tonight:/
Amano shrimp went in the bowls. I expect I'll never see them again because there is too much going on :T Boys are doing good!

Fluval spec 5 gallon My halfmoon checking out his new tank mates. Today I bought a rabbit snail and a horstii shrimp, neither of which I have owned before but was recommended by the store owner. I might get another rabbit snail if I have success with this one, but this is more or less the end of my fauna for the spec:)
The two gentlemen in my 2 walmart vases (will I ever clean the glass on the outside? Ehhh) I tore apart my fluval spec yesterday and replanted everything (not pictured). Got a halfmoon in there and some nerite snails. I was really tempted today to get some small schooling fish, but I don’t want to overstock:/ I will probably get some cories this weekend and call it a day.
Man your boys are lovely! I would like to caution you on adding more fish to a Fluval Spec. The two sizes for those are 2.6 and 5 gallons, neither of which have enough room to add more fish along with a betta. If you’re wanting to add a smaller species of schooling fish along with your hm I would suggest upgrading to a 10 gallon or larger, 20 gallons long would be best, especially if you’re wanting cories. That way there’s plenty of room for your betta man and friends!
Too true! I've seen it done, but I'm really hesitent to do it myself (I have the spec 5 gallon). I will most likely leave things as is in my spec, aside from snails and maybe armano shrimp as clean up crew:) Thanks!
Cleaning the tank resulted in Levi being spazz and flaring at everything because a couple plants moved over an inch or two, and the otos emergingfrom the wood to hangout on the plants. It was a good day for the dorks!
