IMPACT OF COVID -19 PANDEMIC ON CANCER PATIENTS
Cancer is not just a word, it is a life changing experience for the patient and their families. Cancer patients are fighting their war every day to live healthily. In the time of COVID -19 pandemic this disease has affected all sections of the society. This coronavirus has more impact toward immunocompromised patients. This disease has stopped cancer patients from visiting their respective hospital and getting treatment. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), has been declared a pandemic since the 11th of March 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO).1,2 Data suggest from china and Italy showed that the case fatality significantly increase with patient with cancer than without cancer.
As per the current situation of India, it has been estimated 1.16 million new cancer cases in 2018, according to the World Health Organisation, which calculated that one in 10 Indians will develop cancer during their lifetime and one in 15 will die of the disease. Of the new cases 2,25,241 will be tobacco related head and neck cancers, and roughly 93,563 women will be diagnosed to have breast cancer this year.
The cancer patients have usually missed the appointment for the surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. In India no health provider institutes have come up with definite protocols for management of cancer patients. The different societies of cancer are following on definite treatment protocols for their own patients. In this one of the most recognized societies i.e European society of Medical oncology (ESMO) has come up with different steps of protocols for the management of the different types of cancers.
After reading different viewpoints, in the time of coronavirus we have realized how much more effort we have to put in to save our beloved patients. The governments of developing nations especially have to realize that what we had prepared for the management in case of triage has failed. To make a success storey we need to increase our budget for hospitals and specially for a few diseases which really need hands on care. In today's scenario we have to shift from cancer treatment to cancer care for our patients. As our country which has a mostly rural population and is the backbone of our country, for those families and patients we need to come up with a system where health care goes door to door.
Cervical cancer is preventable. Regular screening (pap smear test) and vaccination helps in curing the patient. Faith in tomorrow cancer foundation initiates proper access to pap smear test and HPV vaccine at lower cost and makes sure it should be easily accessible to women all over India. Need to talk?
