They just recently released a new card that references this scene!!

This new card is 《Break The Destiny》 which I am guessing is what the Japanese translated Begone Destiny to 😅.

And features Bloo-D!!

He’s a character from another card game anime, Cardfight!! Vanguard, also voiced by Saiou’s va

This is him. He basically lives by ‘strength is everything, weakness is a sin’ and the word ‘chill’ does not exist in this man’s vocabulary. At all. He’s at 100% all the time. He is incredibly extra.

And yes he’s an antagonist (at least for a time, and no he still does not chill even after stopping being an antagonist).

Oh it gets better.... the Vanguard anime runs off the motto Imagination = Power, where your strength in the cardgame is proportional to how deeply you can immerse yourself in the game.

When Kanzaki lost, he went "My Imagination is not Strong enough!! I need to Strengthen my Imagination!!!" "I KNOW!!!" "I will carve giant f**k off statues of my cards into a mountain somewhere as a hermit!!!!"

Hmm, well I’m afraid I don’t know all that much about Pokemon beyond the 90′s anime since I never played any of the games. ^^;; I guess maybe Saiou would have a Psychic type though. Or maybe he can start out with an Eevee and it can evolve into an Espeon.

For Ed, ummm, I dunno… I kinda just want to give him a Bulbasaur since that’s my favorite Pokemon and it would be kind of hilarious to see him carrying one around. ^^;;

Oh a Psychic type for Saiou for sure. It’s worth noting that while there’s no ‘fortune telling” type pokemon or anything (at least that I can think of), Psychic pokemon CAN learn Future Sight. Which if the anime is to be believed, CAN see the future (and not just in battle), and they can share these visions with their trainer. So. That feels fitting him him.

I’d also throw in possibly Absol, given that they seem to be able to sense disasters before they happen (incidentally, despite being a Dark type they can also learn Future Sight)

For Edo, I’ll be honest I leap right to Lucario for him. If only b/c of this recent pokedex entry about them

It can tell what people are thinking. Only Trainers who have justice in their hearts can earn this Pokémon’s trust.

And a pokemon with a sense of justice seems very, Edo.

Plus it’s a fighting type and given that he uses HERO monsters, the fighting type seems most appropriate for him too.

Also on an interesting note, Lucario can sense and read auras.

The Aegislash line if only for this line of thinking; Aegislash is a sword and shield, swords and shield are used by knights, knights are honourable and fight for justice, so knights are heroes, Edo uses heroes so something like a heroic knight would fight him. Ergo this line of ghost swords.

Oh interesting! Those sound like they’d be good team choices too! Ed definitely would be drawn to Pokemon who like justice. ^^;;

I think this pokemon is a good fit for Edo, it gives off a knightly sort of aura with its design but its also a dark type to go along with the Dark Hero motif

Oh cool, a new monster summons! That was a pretty neat one!

You better watch out though, Yuga, because I think Shun’s on his way to steal that bird from you.

Shun recently got a some new birds for his collection, so his appetite for new birds is sated for now.

(Fun fact: these new cards actually link Raid Raptors with Phantom Knights and Rebellion, so you can now effectively play a Yuto Shun Hybrid deck)

Also kudos to Yubel’s voice actress for the pronunciation on that German phrase.

In regards to Yubel's new form I have 3 points to make:

1. As mentioned by the translators, Das Abscheulich Ritter is German for "the detestable knight"

2. My favorite detail, Das Abscheulich Ritter is actually gramatically wrong. German is one of the languages that practices gendering their nouns (they have 3 distinctions, Masculine, Feminine and Neutral)

Since "Ritter" (Knight) is masculine, it should be "Der Abscheuliche Ritter".

Das is meant to be gender neutral....

hmmm something tells me that this was delibrate

3. It's kinda sad that German Yugioh decided to follow the name of the english card Yubel - Terrorinkarnation (Yubel - Terror Incarnate)

It’s interesting to me that, at this point, it feels like Judai is behaving more like Yami Yugi (or any other of the “serious” protagonists) than like himself. Of course I like them all, but it upsets me because from the start of the show he was established as being different from all of them because of his unique fun-loving nature. Now he’s lost that. �� I hope that doesn’t happen to Yuga Oudou.

Yeah, I miss Judai’s cheerfulness and how he was always able to have fun with a duel too. :\ He did kind of show a little bit of that excitement again when he was watching Ryou duel and remembering his past duels with him but unfortunately it didn’t last for long. I know he had to grow up and obviously everything he’s been through would make him more serious now, but I hope that he’ll be able to find his sense of fun again at some point….

While it hurts to see him like that, I also love it a lot. In part because, well, let’s be honest, I like suffering, but also because it’s very well done (I especially like how it’s treated in S4 even though/because it hits close to home).

My main issue with most YGO shows, no matter how much I like them, is that I feel it undersells the trauma and horror of the stuff that happens to the characters. GX already did a better job than most by showing Judai having night terrors in season 1, but Season 3 is the breaking point, the moment the show goes “yep, this is fucked up and yes this will have consequences for the protagonist”. The ‘growing up’ part of this season is more about responsibilities and acceptance than it is about the trauma itself, tbh.

But even if Judai will never be the same after that, that doesn’t mean he won’t ever find fun and joy again. ;)

They don’t really separate the two all that much this season though, at least for Judai anyway, so it feels kind of like they’re saying that trauma and growing up are supposed to go hand in hand. Especially since they kept going on early in the season about how darkness of the heart was something you had to have to be a serious duelist or whatever.

i hope he will! I don’t expect him to go back to his season 1 personality certainly, but it would definitely be nice to see him actually be happy again for a change. ^^;;

It doesn’t seem separated this season yes, but that’s mostly because the consequences of Judai’s selfishness finally caught up to him. A lot of the traumatic things that happened this season could’ve been avoided if he had simply not prioritized his own interests over helping others. (Like the fact that it took him two dozen episodes to save Manjoume and Asuka from the Society of Light when it should’ve taken maybe four episodes.)

Really, even if Yubel wasn’t colluding with the Dark World monsters, the same thing would’ve happened to Judai and his friends anyways. He waited too long to grow up, and as a result he must live the rest of his life with blood stained hands and cards.

Yeah, it’s less ‘you have to be traumatized to grow up’ and more like, the result of his actions are creating an eyeopening and traumatizing experience that is forcing him to grow up.

I think that idea right there is what kind of bothers me about all of this. Like, I understand why this all happened and how selfish Judai has been in the past. I just don’t think I’ll ever find it actually necessary for them to have been quite so hard on him as they have been in order to make him grow up. :\

There is a reason why among GX critics out there, they say that Season 3 is a massive tonal shifted. While it was effective, it might have been a bit heavy handed in driving the message across. There is no denying though that it created a memorable arc that stayed in the minds of Yugioh fans for years to come.

I am honestly curious now how you will react to Zexal, since looking back now it makes for an interesting companion piece to GX in the sense that they tackle "Childishness", though in very very different ways.

Yup! Also when Allen and Sayaka were introduced, many people thought that they were AU deaged versions of Tsukumo Haru, Yuma's grandmother, and Misawa Rokujuro, the owner of the Duel Sanctuary......

Cardfight Vanguard Episode 22

Ohhhhh Yeah I am so ready, though sorry Kai and Dragonic Waterfall, you are going to job so hard later.

Also this is for manga readers (i.e. those who know whats happening next). I read ahead and wow, it really is incredible how this Kai is simultaneously so much more worse off, yet grows that much more so much more quicky.

Most synchro decks need a good amount of fine tuning and streamlining to function well, syncho decks usually have 2-3 different levels of syncho monsters they go into. Just starting out is going to be tough since the syncho pool you have access to is small. Doesn't help that with a small 3 monster board, extensive combo plays that defined the synchro era are tough and stardust dragon, level 8 that he is, will likely take your whole board to summon

Yeah, I’ve noticed the smaller field makes it a lot harder to Synchro summon. It’s fine for summoning things like, level 6 and below but once the level gets higher it can get trickier.

I managed to get Stardust summoned with just two monsters + a spell to make my Tuner level 4, but still, getting the cards to pull off the combo is frustrating to say the least.

On that note, I hope now that we have 5D’s world this means they’ll release the Aromage Synchro. o3o I could be tempted to build a Synchro deck for that one.

Also it’s kind of funny that I’ll be seeing what a Riding Duel looks like in Arc V first instead of 5Ds. I mean, I’ve already seen him duel on his motorcycle before but that was against Yuto who didn’t have one. So this should certainly be different.

In Arc-V a Riding Duel is just a regular duel on motorcycles, lol. But in 5D’s, riding duels have their own rules that differ from regular dueling just like Action Duels. In a Riding Duel in 5D’s, a field spell called “Speed World” activates at the beginning of every duel, and while you can use your same old monsters and trap cards, you can’t use your regular spell cards, you have to use special ones called “Speed Spells”. During the end phase of either duelist’s turn, they each get a “speed counter” to use. Speed Spells can only be used according to how many speed counters you have, so if you were to go first at the beginning of a duel you wouldn’t be able play any Speed Spells on your first turn due to not having any Speed Counters until after you end your turn.

Oh okay, thanks for the explanation! At least I’ll still have something different to look forward to in 5Ds then. :)

That's actually a little off, the reason why they are calling it a riding duel is because thats what the localization team renamed them when they brought 5ds over to america (I guess to take away the inneundos?) And whoever was dubbing just deciding to follow the lingo of the dub

And what a mountain he is! I love how he sets his foot more firmly in the ground and stands up straight and tall, ready to take on anything his opponent can throw at him.

I mentioned this before, but Gongenzaka is very heavily based on Benkei, who’s basically one of the iconic Japanese heroes - and Benkei was famous for never backing down and never falling. His most famous feat was when his lord Yoshitsune decided to commit seppiku when an army lay on his doorstep, and he ordered Benkei to hold them off long enough for them to both die on their terms. When the army tried to rush Benkei across the drawbridge, Benkei struck them down in combat, and frightened them off with his great size and monstrous appearance. Three hundred dead warriors later, the army decided to stop engaging Benkei and fired a volley of arrows at him - but to their surprise, he remained standing. It wasn’t until later that they realized the volley HAD killed him. Benkei, to protect his lord, died on his feet.

This ideal basically informs Gongenzaka’s character - stay steadfast, never back down, and never fall.

Oh yeah, I think I remember you bringing that connection up before in relation to what Big Ben-K’s name meant. That’s really cool that Gongenzaka is based on such a hero!
