Autumn of 2004 is turning out to be the absolute worst year of tenth grade for Park Jimin. The hallways are a minefield of harsh whispers, name-calling, and bruises he has to hide under oversized sweaters. His only escape is his hyperfixation: a worn-out, library-bound book about vampire lore.

When his bullies catch him reading it, they do what they do best—destroy it, tearing the pages to shreds because they think his obsession is "extremely weird." But they leave behind a single, intact section: a ritual on how to summon a vampire.

Furious, heartbroken, and deeply skeptical, Jimin tries the ritual at midnight, fully expecting it to be a myth. When the candles burn out and nothing happens, he throws a tantrum, cursing his ruined book.

He doesn't realize the ritual did work. It just took a 700-year-old vampire named Ian a few minutes to figure out his GPS coordinates.

(What Ian doesn't know, and what Jimin hasn't even realized about his own ancient, dusty past yet, is that Jimin isn't exactly entirely human either.)
