So, I've been doing some more ADHD research in order to understand how and why my brain functions the way it does and uh...
[Image 1 desc: Scientists have observed that levels of dopamine are different in people with ADHD than in those without ADHD. Some researchers believe this difference is because neurons in the brain and nervous systems of people with unmedicated ADHD have lower concentrations of proteins called dopamine transporters. /End desc]
(Image 2 desc: In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter - a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells. The brain includes several distinct dopamine pathways, one of which plays a major role in the motivational component of reward-motivated behavior. /End desc]
[Image 3 desc: Sugar and other high carb foods boost dopamine levels in the brain, leading us to crave them more often when dopamine levels are low. Since kids with ADHD have chronically low levels of dopamine, they are more likely than other kids to crave and eat sugary or carbohydrate-heavy foods. /End desc]
I'm screaming: THAT'S why I eat way too many fucking sweets!!!
Also, our chronically low dopamine levels do also explain why we have hyperfixations: it's because our brains have such lacking amounts of said neurotransmitter, it latches onto various activities/interests because they help provide us with the dopamine our brains so desperately crave!! It also explains why we struggle with staying on tasks that don't interest us: because, as previously mentioned, dopamine plays a major role in the motivational compartment of reward-motivated behaviour!!!
I simply needed to share this because it might help other ADHD/ADDers understand themselves!! Because it sure as hell helped me out.
