I really really hate this uptick in people "ocifying" characters from their favourite non-canon ships without transforming or improving upon the source material in any way, specifically because they want the characters to be immediately recognisable so that they can use the original ship to market their story to fellow shippers. now, I'd never say my own ocs are not based on/carry pieces of certain characters I like, or even that some of them aren't made for the express purpose of shipping, but idk, does it make me snob to think that maybe, even if your characters are clearly based off existing ones, you shouldn't be like, using that source material to advertise your "original" work? not because I care about the rights some big ass corporation has to a given character, or whatever, but rather because it feels...I'm not quite sure how to describe it...almost cheap? perhaps? is that snobby for me to say? maybe I feel this way because the pairings I most often see this done to are not good to begin with, and they tend to be from media that already really sucks, so I'm simply not the target audience. then again, if someone were to do the same with the singular popular non-canon ship I do like, I would still find it unappealing. It just seems sort of dystopian, in a way, for people to be openly and shamelessly capitalising off of a given non-canon ship's popularity to sell what should be...different in some meaningful way. but it's not satire, it's not parody, it's not a good faith retelling, it's literally just fandom brain rot. can't we leave that to fan fiction and fanart? it's like...like it was truly just too much work to do anything that demonstrates actual investment or respect for...idk, what it means to be an artist, I suppose? ah, maybe I am just too snobby for this.
