This year marks the final stretch of our Black 2 Black bikepacking adventure along the EV6. Last year we finished in Ruse so this is going to be the start line for this year and then we aim to take 7-8 stages to follow the Danube first east then north, riding back down to Constanta and then taking the train back to Bucarest.
The saga continues … the next week we are continuing our adventure from 2024, bike packing from Budapest to Bucharest. 1300km in 8 days along the Danube river crossing: Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.

You gotta lose some - you gotta win some.
Since I was at the Cyclocross Worlds in Tabor two years ago I was dreaming about pre-riding a professional cyclocross course before the big race starts. I imagined how to sneak my bike in just to do one or two hot laps, to ride all the sections and experience first hand what it feels like being out there cornering through slippy sections or traversing through the modder. Also to experience what is my time worth - how much am I behind a Welderkampion or the winner of the race (spoiler alert: it wasn't one and the same person last Sunday). So when I heard rumors about the Masters World Championships coming to Mol in 2016 I was excited since it's within a reasonable travel range and also because there was a pro race scheduled the day after: Zilvermeercross.

European Masters Cyclo-Cross Championships // Trnava, Slovakia
// Blue skies, 14°C and a freaking fast hard packed track in the outskirts of Trnava, Slovakia - it was all on and after last years double chain drop disaster, revenge should be mine.
The whistle went off and the rider in front of me missed his pedal and suddenly the whole pack was flying past me. Damn, dead fucking last on to the grassy, hilly section of the course - a position you don't want to find yourself at all because from there on it's a rollercoaster of 4 hills up and down in a row and you can't really make up places when stuck in traffic there. After this sections followed a long straight with a lot of tight corners so it was constantly out of the saddle, accelerating to full speed, break, corner, sprint, break, corner - really exhausting and no time to rest and catch a breath.
Was leading my group of 4 riders for a couple of laps trying to catch the riders in front of us but the pursuit was too intense and in the end I finished 17th. Not that much to gain for me on a fast and non technical track but another European Masters Championships done and dusted and performance wise it was much much better than last year - already looking forward to CX Masters Worlds early December in Mol, Belgium.

“Riders who win in Liège are what we call fondisti - men with a superior level of stamina. [The climb of] La Redoute is like the Mur de Huy in that it has to be tackled at pace, from the front of the peloton. The gradient is about 14 or 15 per cent, and it comes after 220 or 230 kilometers, so you don't have to be a genius to work out how tough it is. I remember that we used to go up with a maximum of 39 x 21 - it's not quite as steep as the Mur de Huy. A lot of riders mistakenly think you should attack on the hardest part, but in reality you hurt people on the slightly flatter section that comes after this. Liège is a race of trial by elimination, where it's very unlikely that a breakaway can go clear and decide the race before the final 100 km. You need to be strong and at the same time clever and calculating — in this sense it's a complete test of a cyclist's ability.”

Paris Roubaix - Queen of the classics. My most favorite weekend of the whole season is ramping up!
Während Horst, Gerold, Andreas, Fred und Daniel aus termintechnischen Gründen erst knapp nach 13 Uhr starten können, beschließen Wolf und ich bereits um 9 Uhr Früh loszufahren. Ich bin top ausgerüstet, vor allem wegen Michl, der mir Sattel-Gepäcks-Tasche als auch Laufrad mit Nabendynamo geliehen hat. Beides Teile, die sich während der gesamten Tour sehr bewährt haben. Nach eingehender Konsultation der ZAMG verschieben wir auf 10, doch dann geht es los. Die ersten Kilometer sind schnell heruntergespult, und auch wenn es manchmal nicht so aussieht: das Wetter hält. Im stillen Einvernehmen geht es ohne Pausen (pinkeln und einmal Wasser kaufen ausgenommen) in das 190km entfernte Zdar. Abgesehen von einem kurzen Teilstück, hält sich der Verkehr in Maßen. Erst mit dem Abendverkehr wird der wieder stärker. In der Regel holen die Autos weit aus wenn sie uns überholen, nur 2 Tschechen fahren besonders dicht vorbei, hupen und schimpfen uns an. Idioten gibt es leider überall. Die letzten 50 Kilometer sind wellig und daher durchaus fordernd, einmal sogar mit 14% Steigung, und da es bis 550m hinaufgeht auch kälter. Mitlerweile bin ich sogar schon zu faul weitere Riegel zu essen - Wolf vermutet ausgeklügeltes Nahrungsmanagement - die 3-Riegel-für-190km-Taktik ist geboren. Im Hotel fehlt es an nichts. Nachdem ich mich im Wellnesbereichs des Zimmers frisch mache, reicht Wolf mir frisch gemachten Tee. Erst jetzt wird mir klar warum seine Gepäcktasche deutlich größer als meine ausfällt. Wasserkocher fordern eben ihren Tribut. Nächstes Jahr kommt noch ein Massage Roller dazu verrät mir Wolf. Nachdem das angeschlossene Restaurant alle unsere Wünsche erfüllt hat, gleiten wir in einen tiefen Schlaf und träumen von exquisiten Leni’s Riegeln.

Austrian National Championships Cyclo-cross 2016
Cross is special - a whole season leading up to one race where it's all in or all down and shattered in the muddy fields of any given village in the middle of nowhere. Last weekend it was this time of the year where Nationals are popping up and everyone and their mothers are going crazy.
Saturday saw a training race which already gave an impression how the course, spiked with very technical sections, a frozen sand pit and rock hard climbs will transform into a giant mud pool on Sunday if the predicted heavy rainfall during the night will arrive. And it hit down hard! Sunday saw a complete different course for nationals. Deep muddy sections that were ridable on Saturday without any problem became a slippery mud carpet - changing throughout the race. After a good start I could maintain a good pace but hit the decks twice in a nasty left hander after a fast descend. After a bike change I could continue to push on with much better traction and was able to extend the lead from the group I was riding with. The only one that was catching up slowly but steady was Andi Mayer from fellow cycling club Wiener Sportklub. After battling with him over 2 laps I lost touch after hitting the deck again at the exact same spot as before. I was still able to push on and finished right behind Andi in 7th place.
A good CX season for me with a 12th place at the European Master Championships in Trnava in November, an overall 19th place in the Austrian Cyclo-cross cup presented by Roadbiker and now the podium finish with a 7th place at the Austrian Nationals.
