Do your worst
You want the goth subculture to continue existing? Then accept that not everyone can be an 80s goth and a 90s goth. Those times are past. There will be 2000s goths and 2010s goths and hopefully goths for many, many years to come. And there will always be differences and the scubculture is going to evolve. Stop shitting on current goths just because you you can’t change and are suffocating in your stagnation and elitism.
Truuuuuth I would like to add something to this that not a lot of people think about. Many people are victims of their time and their generation. From the moment we are born we are shaped by our environment. Everything we see on tv, hear on the radio and experience in our lives helps build the person we become. No matter what, young goths are never going to be exactly like goths in the 80’s and 90’s because we didn’t experience it. No matter how much 80’s music we listen to or how big we tease our hair, we will never know the feeling of stepping into a goth club in 83 and experiencing the rush of existing at the exact moment a subculture was being born. We will never know what its like to listen to Bauhaus when they were still new and young. We weren’t there. We didn’t grow up in a more conservative time when mainstream culture dominated and punk and goth kicked and slashed its way onto the scene giving kids permission to rebel and express themselves. We grew up in a different time. Some of us grew up being outcasts in a time when emo culture was popular and the only freaks in school were kids in tight jeans and band t’s. Some of us are teens in a time when social media rules and the easiest way to make friends is talking to people on the internet. Its a different time. It will always be a different time. No matter what, goth will never be the same. Goth formed at the perfect time and place and has since grown but at the end of the day, it will never be the same. The world has changed. If goth had waited til now to form it wouldn’t be the same. Just be happy that it happened when it did but don’t blame young goths for not being there. Don’t blame them for being different or seeing goth differently from you. Their experiences are not the same.
also accepting non white goths
^ F'real, weed out the elitist yt goths already.
(Should go without saying but, the racist/misogynist/homophobic/etc goths gotta go, too!)
I was a proud 90’s goth and I’m delighted goth is continuing on. It for me was and still my identity. Things evolve with time that’s natural and goth culture is no different. Be goth as you see goth to you. Please don’t let the lifestyle die!
Things that don’t evolve or adapt don’t survive and we all want the goth culture to live long so we should all be accepting of anyone and everyone choosing to express themselves through this wonderful culture!
Please preach this.
I wasn’t a goth kid (although I’m Gen X, so if I had been, I’d have been a 90′s goth), but I hung out with a fair few of them in high school, because my crowd was the bookish/artistic/nerdy bunch. (My high school was quite large, so the bookish/nerdy/academically-ambitious and the artistic/musical/theatre cliques cross-pollinated a bit, which may be the case for others as well, even people who went to smaller high schools than I did.)
That being said, I totally agree with all this. Any [sub]culture that doesn’t grow with the times is doomed to die, and the elements of exclusivity (such as racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, etc. as well as general elitism) really do need to go (and not just in goth culture, TBH).
Y’all young folks just getting into goth are just as valid as members of the subculture as people of my generation and older who were part of it from the word “Go” or shortly thereafter.
