Foolish Traveler Tale ~ Fruits Basket (2019)
Do you think Hatori ever saw Ayame mending his relationship with Yuki and wanted to do the same? Like I know that he didn't feel like he could do anything, but do you think he ever wanted to?
I think Hatori has carried what happened between him and Yuki as a deep, burdensome regret since the day one. I think he was completely aware of the fact that he was both the only person who truly witnessed what Yuki was going through (he was both Akito’s doctor/caretaker-in-training and Ayame’s close friend, after all) and someone who would never be able to help because of the hurt he inflicted onto Yuki.
I would guess that Hatori has always hoped to find a way to reconcile with Yuki, or at least find ways to atone for what he did. But I also think that he believes that an apology isn’t really something that can be offered in this situation–and I think he also understands that he can’t just try and rekindle a relationship with Yuki like Ayame can. That’s sort of just not the position he’s in–and, really, he never even had that relationship with Yuki to begin with.
That’s why I love the interaction with Yuki & Hatori later in the series where Yuki is the one who ends up apologizing to Hatori for holding onto those resentful/frightened/apprehensive feelings of him. It’s such an unwittingly empathetic moment, and it’s something that I think really means a lot to Hatori–who probably was trying to find the right way to apologize since a decade ago.
I think it’s probably from this moment on that Hatori realizes he’s been worrying all this time for nothing. He’s been watching Yuki grow probably as this sorrowful eye from afar. And instead of Yuki turning down this dark and twisted path that Akito fell down as a result of their past, Yuki has forged a completely different route for himself. It must be wonderful to see someone who went through so much start to mature into someone truly kind and compassionate.
I think from here, Hatori can probably stop seeing Yuki as a regret that needs to be repented and more as actual family. Yuki has moved on and grown from the experience and is welcoming Hatori into that process. Hatori isn’t about to turn down that invitation. He probably serves as a wonderful source of wisdom and guidance and reliance as Yuki goes forward in his life. That’s what I like to think, at least!!!
