Can I be mega-woke9000 for a moment. It seems like whenever any character in any media is only ever referred to as "they/them" without making a big massive scene about the fact that they use "they/them", people either genuinely forget and just assign them binary pronouns based on how they perceive them (If the person has feminine voice=female, if person has masculine voice=male) or they purposefully assign them pronouns because they just think of they/them pronouns as purely placeholders unless SPECIFICALLY and THOROUGHLY told otherwise. It's. Exhausting. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed, but I hardly ever see people talk about it. Maybe I'm just not in the right spaces, idk. Nevertheless, some examples I can think of are Undertale (Frisk, Chara), Deltarune (Kris), Among us show (quite literally everyone) and I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting.
The problem is that if the character presented male and was only ever referred to with he/him pronouns, nobody on God's green earth would ever refer to him as she/her unless they had their own headcanon of that character being transfem. Nobody has any issues with correctly identifying Minnie Mouse as a woman with she/her pronouns, y'know. But if a character, who is literally described as a sexless being within their canon, is only referred to as they/them and is never truly put into any binary or stereotypical feminine or masculine roles, everyone wracks their brain trying to put them in a box of "male" or "female". Even if they RECOGNIZE the character to be nonbinary in some way, they still try to put them in the "feminine/afab nonbinary" or "masculine/amab nonbinary". It defeats the whole point. Nonbinary isn't "are you fem or masc" it can be neither, both, or anything in-between. I see it all the time with Among us show fanart. The "feminine" ones (black, cyan, orange, purple, yellow) are the ones with what YOU perceive to be women's voices. The "masculine" ones (red, brown, green, white, blue, lime) are the ones with what YOU perceive to be male's voices. Despite nobody using binary pronouns, not even once in the script, people sometimes even THINK that they used binary pronouns in the show because the fandom so often assigns all of them binary genders. People have to be REMINDED that they all use they/them because everyone seems to genuinely think they were given binary genders in the show. It's. So weird.
Sigh. What I'm trying to say is,,, please just be more aware. Try to challenge the idea of they/them just being a placeholder for "correct" pronouns. If a character was only ever referred to as she/her, would you start using he/him for them? To add another layer, even if the character looked masculine, but was ONLY ever referred to as she/her by plenty of characters and was constantly referred to, would you resort to he/him? Would the "she/her" pronouns go in one ear and out the other? Or would you recognize she/her as "actual" pronouns that couldn't be ignored? Just. Just think about it.
