Auvinen's father consults a weapons expert
Gun expert Runo K. Kurko has been in contact with the father of Auvinen. Kurko says he has received Auvinen's perspective on how the gun law should be changed.
According to Runo K. Kurko, chairman of the National Rifle Association and weapons expert, the family background of those applying for a firearms permit should be carefully examined.
– The official who grants the permit usually does not have any psychological training, so he or she cannot assess whether the person is a psychopath. A psychologist should definitely be present during the interview, says Kurko.
He emphasizes that attention should be paid to the applicant's criminal and family background in particular. He has received one perspective from the father.
– He contacted me by email. The father told me that his son had been suffering from mental health problems for a long time. He wrote to me that he had tried to get his son into treatment, but was unsuccessful. If Auvinen's parents had been interviewed before the son was granted a gun permit, the father could have told the authorities about his son's condition. The legislative amendment must focus specifically on these issues, which Auvinen's father has also consulted us about, he continues.
Ministers must take responsibility
The man is demanding that ministers be held accountable in the Kauhajoki case.
– All of this could have been prevented if the ministers had acted in time. After the Jokela tragedy, we made a proposal with the board of the National Rifle Association and special experts to change the gun legislation. We submitted it to the ministers, who did nothing to help the matter, Kurko says firmly.
– Instead of the changes recommended by the association, a guideline was made to standardize gun permit practices, which is completely incomprehensible. It does list many reasons why a gun permit can be granted, but it does not delve into why a permit should be denied to someone, Kurko continues.
According to Kurko, tightening the licensing requirements for small-caliber weapons is not a solution.
– The Jokela and Kauhajoki incidents have shown that the caliber of the weapon does not matter. Even small calibers are deadly.
