As most of you know the Brisbane Lions this year, under new coach Justin Leppitsch, sourced funding to send the entire team to Flagstaff Arizona to complete two weeks of pre-season training at altitude. Leppa believes that one of the most important elements of this new beginning at the club is forming a united front, creating a strong bond between players and staff alike and ensuring the club builds a culture that will enhance player retention, given 80% of the group consists of players of interstate origin. The Arizona trip last year which number of the senior group participated in also showed to be a great asset to pre-season training. It has often been said that our ability to run out some of those tough come from behind wins this year could be put down to the fitness of our boys, something that high altitude training definitely benefits.
The boys have just completed their first week of the trip (give or take 24 hours with time difference) so this post is a little snippet into some of the things we have learned from the Arizona trip. A little mix of the serious and the lighter side from the boys so far.
Training: The first week consisted primarily of running and skills early, with some light weight sessions, followed by the first attempt at reaching the summit of Mt Humphreys (the aim of doing this early was to get the EPO spike and speed up their acclimatisation). The weather proved much kinder than last year and the guys reached the summit at 12,633 ft on the first attempt. The boys were then given a full day off for recovery before beginning the next few sessions of higher intensity running, strongman and some water based recovery activities. The boys will be attempting to reach the summit at Mt Humphreys again during the second week of training.
Highlights and insights from the boys:
Sammy Mayes was a victim of air travel sickness during the flight over, he's not particularly fond of flying
Joely Pat got the grey team lost on their first attempt at reaching the summit
Rocky can answer the call of Movember, with an albeit concerning looking Mo
Pearce is very particular about his food
Closey isn't fond of rooming with Weardo
Stakes is filthy he's missing the Victoria Secret Fashion show
A few of the boys are very impressed by their acquisition of a 24 hour golf channel
Sauce is almost ready to be back running after the ankle injury, but is primarily working on the upper body at this stage but shouldn't miss any games next season, likewise Sammy Mayes has had his first run back from his achilles issue
A few of the boys took on some of the American's at basketball and put on a bit of a clinic
Everything in America is BIG (nice assessment courtesy of Weardo)
The boys are adjusting well to the new game plan under Leppa
Closey, Patfull, Peppers, Reddo, Dadsy and Beamsy have been stand outs in the first week
Everyone has been impressed with how well Beamsy has been doing back from his knee reco this year (GREAT NEWS)
Greeny has had a spiritual epiphany during his first climb and found something new about himself
