Anne Sexton, from The Complete Poems (1999); “Suicide Note,” ed. by Maxine Kumin (x)
“You were not there for The Beginning. You will not be there for The End… Your knowledge of what is going on can only be superficial and relative…”
— William S. Burroughs, Naked Lunch (1959)
Already There
Snake takes its time over a lazy dog,
quick bird is not quick enough,
the branches brow-heavy and low, the birds left are left without hope and so sit plump in wait,
can be plucked like jackfruit.
The tree was infested long ago, no guard-dog can be coaxed to matter now.
- B B Pine
90’s
“I didn’t know I wore hats like that.”Â
-Jeff Ament PJ20 Press Conference
Layne during Lollapalooza 1993.
“I went back to the origin, the starting point, the innermost despair in me,”
— Bo Carpelan, tr. by David McDuff, from “Urwind,” published c. 1993
“Why am I so tired? I am tired Not because I work very hard, Not because I sleep too little, But because I think too much.”
— Sri Chinmoy (via spiritualgateway)
What they have given
Though they have given us sharp nights And many, and bitter, Our own bodies Give us our longest living blessing.
Whispered skin that holds its secrets Bones that mourn with us. An ache like a dream breath
Grief coming home.
Oh, this soft low flesh Does not forget.
“Never let yourself believe you’re not enough.”
