It's Lesson 6 and I've just learned that tumblr provides you an email account that you can use to publish directly from your phone or desktop. Amazing!
We’ve made it incredibly easy to post from your desktop or mobile phone. Just send an email with the content you’d like to publish to your blog’s custom, randomly generated email address.
This link serves as a How-To create different types of postings and how to find your unique email address. Note that there's no audio or video posting in this format, yet. Also, beware. Keep it private, otherwise folks can post to your page without your knowledge. And I don't think anyone wants that.

Now at my 5th post, I've begun to think about building an audience. If the point of a Tumblr blog is to draw attention to under-accessible archives then it is important to not only create a curated site with interesting content, but to ensure it is being shared.
This article offers some interesting data regarding what makes a Tumblr site successful. Tip 5 is to Connect with Your Influencers.
Take the time to like, comment, or reblog posts that are relevant. This can help create a connection with influential users and a place for your brand within the Tumblr community.
So, as an exercise in this practice, I am going to "like" a blog, "comment" on a blog, and "repost" a blog tonight.

Alright, I liked a photo from http://www.losangelespast.com. It was very simple. You just click the heart icon.
I reposted an entry from the Smithsonian Latino Virtual Museum. I chose this one because the format could be suitable for a future assignment. To do so I just clicked the double arrow icon. Although it reposts on my own blog, it is distinguished from my own writing by a a grey line and inset.
I commented on the same blog, unintentionally, by adding a comment below my own repost. I didn't realize it at the time, but this comment was then added to the "notes" section of the original blog. In reviewing other notes, I noticed most are just likes and reposts.

On day four, I've decided to upload a video I made for a class project last year. It seemed fitting since I attended a a Critical Race Theory conference at the Yale Law School where the keynote discussed the logic of the post-racial turn. My apologies that the text flies by so quickly. In an assignment, I might ask students to review a video clip or to design their own.
A few things stick out when comparing the use of Tumblr versus YouTube.
It's much easier to upload a video to Tumblr than YouTube.
Tumblr allows for better organization. The video becomes an object in a curated site, rather than a single object. That is, it is read in the context of other posts that range from sound clips to news links.
Although YouTube allows the author to provide a description, Tumblr allows for more in depth narrative (space, hyperlinking, additional images). To be fair though, I haven't really spent much time using this function on YouTube.
It is also very cool that when the video appears in your Tumblr newsfeed, it plays as a slideshow of images (without sound).
I still wonder if Tumblr provides for a better way of sharing than, say, Scalar. In particular, Scalar would allow me to include multiple videos in the same post and to tag particular clips within a video. On the other hand, it isn't as user friendly as this.

It's my third day experimenting with tumblr as a teaching platform. I had planned to play with different ways to upload news articles. Then I came across this NPR story on my friend's Facebook page. Part news article, part sound clip, tumblr offers the ideal platform for sharing this type of mixed-media story.
Now, I love this story because it speaks to my own research and political interests. But I also love the mix of photos, sound bite, text, and allowance for user comments.
Border Patrol checkpoints aren't always near the border. Some aren't even on roads that go to the border. Take Arivaca Road; it's an East-West route 25 miles north of the Mexican border in Southern Arizona.

I'm still unsure how to allow for images to appear on the newsfeed. The "audio" option allows for "album art." Ideally, I'd be able to link to an image from the news page, but I'm unsure how to do that, if it can be done.

On day two of my journey into tumblr, I'm interested in reposting and repurposing news articles, like this one from the Daily Bulletin. If I were to design an assignment based on this feature, I might ask students to blog on the article's content. Students would then be asked to relate the article to the themes in their reading assignment. And, it would be followed by discussion questions or a bibliography of suggested readings.
I have two primary concerns:
There is no guarantee regarding how long the article will stay on the DB's website. If the DB takes down the article, than this entry would become a bit obsolete. As a counter to this point, the blog summary could extend the life of the article in a new form.
The thumbnail image from the article (and it has some great pictures), does not appear on my personal tumblr page. I'm not sure if this is a question of the style I chose (I've since changed it from the Club Monaco theme to the Showroom theme) or an issue of the "link" option. Perhaps I'll try experimenting with different ways of sharing news links next time.

Learning to Use tumblr.
Hello tumblr world. I'm teaching a public history course next semester and for our final project we will be building a website together. The purpose of the website is to increase access to an archival collection and, in light of this public history component, I'm experimenting with tumblr to see if it can serve as a platform. If the goal is to increase access to archival sources, I like the idea of using a popular site like tumblr to draw attention to these collections. Drawing inspiration from Art Intersections' engagement with tumblr, I'll be experimenting off and on to see what this is capable of.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
