WEEK FIVE | OPEN DAY SPACE DESIGN

Here are the plans and design developments for the Open Day Space. We choose to use the stories from University students experiences so that College students can read them in a fun and colourful way

WEEK FIVE | GIVE AWAY ITEM

While planning and designing the Open Day space we were also planning the give away item and the website wireframes

Give away item - Is about lending the students to the website something memorable and fun.

Website - Two way communication between College students and University students.

Taking the things that worked in Week 3 and developing them further to engage students and make them feel invited and friendly.

WEEK FIVE | OPEN DAY

This week we meet up the Open Day Event Manager about having our student project on display. We got a space at the end of Gallery C with the projector.

WEEK FIVE | TESTING COLOURS, SHAPES, TYPEFACES

To test the colours, typefaces and speech bubbles shapes we used the projector. We realised that it looks completely different on computer screen compared to on the projector. So adjusting the colours was important and we adjust them while the computer was pludged into the projector.

WEEK FIVE | FIGURING OUT OUR OPEN DAY SPACE

We took some photos of two different places that we would like to position our project. We wanted the space down by Toy store but there was no projector. We asked the tech people in Toy Store but it would be a lot of organising to get a projector into that space.

- We were trying out cardboard letters and projecting the stories on top of them

- Looking at it from a distance it was eye catching and interesting

- But close up it was hard to read

WEEK 4 | TYPED OUT STORIES

In the change from College into University where there any specific issue that you had? Trying to find my way around the campus. Once you arrived at University how did you find adapting into the University lifestyle? Took a while to adapt to, due to having to make new friends, getting used to a completely different timetable and a new environment What was one of the most important life skills that you learnt during your first year at University? To distance yourself from your design work and to not take critique personally. What was one of your best moments you went through during University? Finally having a solid group of friends to meet up with after the end of class. What advice would you recommend to Year 13’s who are thinking about attending the creative college here at Massey Uni? To participate and be vocal in class discussions as well as being open for constructive criticism. What was your experience when balancing your existing friends while making new friends? Fairly easy to balance friendships from both sides. Majority of my existing friends left home so during uni, I would hang out with my new friends while during the break I would hang out with my existing ones. How did you maintain old friendships while making new friendships? Just by always being willing to keep in touch with old friends and making the time to be able to hang out with my old friends whenever they were around.

1 - Being in high school and Uni at the same time was a bit challenging. I felt like I had to keep that info secret ( I didn’t want my classmates to know how old I was ).

1 - Being from Wgtn and not at the Cube

1 - The expectation that we would automatically WANT to make new friends with people in uni. Sometimes it’s too much change.

1 - Not knowing what degree would best suite me. I just went for something I enjoyed, design, and hoped for the best.

1 - Deciding whether or not to go to university.

1 - I found it hard fitting into a new place and doing new things such as living on my own, projects that differ, classes that only occurs 2 or 3 times a week and the whole semester thing.

2 - Really weird going from all boys school to having girls in your class.

2 - Adjusting to a new environment/city.

1 - It was daunting, it was like starting high school all over - didn’t know anybody or how to get anywhere and everybody looked down right scary.

2 - No friends for like a semester.

2 - Very good, I had 3 friends from college that were practically all my classes so this did help ease my transition.

3 - To see the rainbow, you have to be in the rain. =) xx

3 - I felt like everyone was really lame & immature and that I was better than them

1 - I really enjoyed my first week at uni! I found it easy to settle in, especially because there was so much planned for us freshers ;) Thank you!

1 - Everyone is nervous and hard to talk to.

2 - Perceptions changed.

3 - It’s honestly not as scary as you may think!! :)

1 - Scary because everyone was from the cube and as a non-residential student I felt quite excluded. Also there are some real fucking twats that you would never have thought to be let into the university, so narcotic.

3 - On my first day of university, the Christchurch earthquake happened, and then we got the rest of the week off. Scary but chill.

2 - felt scary cause I didn’t know many people in my classes.

1 - excited to learn new stuff at uni. TBH was pretty lost around uni lol. Good experience

2 - University is underwhelming and I used to be challenged.

1 - Over whelming!! During the break of my first design class, (like the 20mins mid break,) I was planning how I was going to quit uni + go to yobee as it was just way too crazy. It was intro to VCD + I had to draw a mandarin 100 times.

2 - Scary - didn’t know anyone as I had a gap year

1 - Your flatmates are your best asset. (Assuming you’ve been put with randoms, if not flat with randoms!) They open you up to another whole group of friends, and it’s much easier to form a friendship with someone you’re living with train in class.

1 - Always be friendly and approachable and you’ll be ok.

Practical

2 - Buying / paying for food for myself

1 - The most challenging thing was when I had to choose the profession for my entire life… Then, I realized that I could change it whenever I want if I’m ready to start from the zero, what is exciting really…

3 - Having to sort out my own student ID. - still haven't got one :(

2 - time management

2 - The fact that you don't have to go to class = not attending ever! what even was first year?

1 - Time management between uni work and part-time work.

3 - Moving into a flat with 4 other crazy people!! I never do work because we have so much fun and are distracting!

1 - Going into study groups, meeting new people. But support here is amazing - enjoy your days

2 - Organising power + internet. mostly power

2 - How to pay bills, get a house general life skills needed

1 - Motivating myself to do uni work everyday & working in it in my spare time when not at uni.

2 - Having to cook my own food

2 - I had friends in the year above and didn’t live in the Cube so it was slightly harder but also harder still to find mature and fun friends.

The workload didn’t concern me, that was manageable.

1 - Stay on top of your work during weekdays and then you can party guilt free in the weekends! YOU CAN DO BOTH!! xxo

Education

3 - The lack of help in direction when doing assignments

1 - Support & solo work

3 - People do not tell you what you are getting into. Need specific info, student to student.

3 - Spatial student - University majors are nothing like you do in high school. e.g Visual arts.

1 - Knowing the levels of expectations.

1 - not having a college education

1 - NCEA + University standards are different

1 - Probably just trying to get used to not getting much help from teachers. - Adjusting to a new city.

2 - The workload. High school was a Breeze!

1 - I was late to my first class because of the different streams - A,B,C,E,G ect. Karl chose me to go first in introducing ourselves cause I was last to come lol.

My experience was kind a good because

2 - it gave me more opportunities to explore other areas of design. Such as industrial, photography and spatial. Sort out your fucken essay papers. The teachers barely know what we are doing. - Love a 3rd year.

3 - Chill as. cracking up, geezing all the hot chicks. Way more lax than high school.

Don’t know

Let the students know that what they’re doing in the first year, who they’re friends with, what their job is, it’s all tinite. Nothing is set in store & let them know that they can be who ever they want to be and shouldn't feel like they have to conform to be ‘cool’ or ‘hip’. We’re in Wellington. In 2015. Change is inevitable. So make the most of it. Let them know that even though they should commit to their full potential, of their grades are bad, it doesn’t mean they’re failing. Now’s the time for trail and error, to find out what you like. Make the most of not only your university years, but your youth.

In the change from College into University where there any specific issue that you had? I was 23 when I started uni so had finished college 5 years prior. It was hard relating to the other students as they were straight out of school, I struggled to get back into the mind-set

Once you arrived at University how did you find adapting into the University lifestyle? It was hard at first, I found you weren't told a lot so I missed out on things/opportunities

What was one of the most important life skills that you learnt during your first year at University? Always ask if you're not sure, don't wing it!

What was one of your best moments you went through during University? Getting good grades, it is a real confidence boost!

What advice would you recommend to Year 13’s who are thinking about attending the creative college here at Massey Uni? Make sure you know all the information before signing up for classes etc. To advance into year 2/3/4 papers you have to have done the pre-requisites

What was your experience when balancing your existing friends while making new friends? I stayed much closer to my existing friends as I felt like I related to them more. I made a few new friends but don't socialise with them outside of uni

How did you maintain old friendships while making new friendships? I was more comfortable and had more fun with my existing friends so always made the time for them when I wasn't busy with my projects.

In the change from College into University where there any specific issue that you had? Staying on campus to do work, I was so used to just working at home or in a classroom that I didn’t spend time on campus. I found it hard with discussions and sharing your work that were in a class full of 40 people you don’t know, felt really judgemental at the time, now it’s just natural. I also found the lecture/studio times really confusing and unstructured at the start.

Once you arrived at University how did you find adapting into the University lifestyle? I found it really difficult in the first 3 weeks, not really sure what I was expected to do or what kind of work was required. I found it hard meeting new people as we only came in for classes and everyone else disappeared afterwards.

What was one of the most important life skills that you learnt during your first year at University? How to manage a workload, getting lots of work done efficiently and quickly. Also to open my mind to the world that’s out there rather than the structured school education system, I could explore things I didn’t think I could before. I also learned how to talk about work I was doing and why I was doing it.

What was one of your best moments you went through during University? Presenting my work to clients/ classmates and to the public and being proud and confident in my work. There is no better feeling that working hard on a project and feeling good about that design at the end of it.

What advice would you recommend to Year 13’s who are thinking about attending the creative college here at Massey Uni? Give it a shot and come with an open mind. With the new structure at COCA and with the new facilities there is opportunities to explore and learn what you want. You will learn more in a week than you did in a month at school, but it is not forced and is actually enjoyable which makes studying design so easy! COCA gives you the opportunity to explore where you want to go with design/art and will help you build your skills, confidence and abilities.

What was your experience when balancing your existing friends while making new friends? It took me a few years to do so, I was really close with all my high school friends who were still in Wellington, and didn’t make many friends to begin with but as I spent more time at Uni I made more friends there. I now have a good balance between the two, seeing my uni friends around campus and when I’m working then my old friends when I can during my down times.

How did you maintain old friendships while making new friendships? Always caught up with them for coffee or drinks at least once a week, then seeing them lots during summer as well. It was quite tricky doing so as your uni friends share the same passions and are interested in the same things where as your old friends you lose that closeness as we come from completely different areas now. I have to relate back to my old passions with my old friends so there is common ground again.

In the change from College into University where there any specific issue that you had? I struggled with my time management. At school everything was already planned for you. There was little space to take the initiative. Teacher and the school made most decisiones for you. So I struggled with all the freedom university gave me in the first year.

Once you arrived at University how did you find adapting into the University lifestyle? I struggled a little as I felt I didn’t fit in properly as I was still living at home. The majority of people where flatting so they created a strong bond a friendship that was hard to create when you just shared a few classes together.

What was one of the most important life skills that you learnt during your first year at University? I think time management was a skill I started to develop in the first year of my degree. The amount of work we got at uni compared to the work we got at school was very different. I had to learn how to work faster and smarter.

What was one of your best moments you went through during University? I think that would be the snowboarding trip with the Massey Alpine Club. That was my first time snowboarding. I had a lot of fun, got closer to my uni friends and tried something completely new.

What advice would you recommend to Year 13’s who are thinking about attending the creative college here at Massey Uni? I would say come with an open mind. There are a lot of cool options and paths the creative college offers to students. Sometimes you think one option would be the best for you but you should try other things and give it a go and you would be surprise of how fun other careers are like Textiles and Industrial Design.

What was your experience when balancing your existing friends while making new friends? I think I didn’t do a very good job with this. I felt the workload of uni was a lot so I didn’t spent a lot of time with my old high school friends. Some of my high school friends were with me at Massey so that made it easier for me to keep in touch.

Week 4 - Talking to Tutor

What to do next??? Is the question that we had in mind. We remembered that we have some dissuasions with tutors before about hang our idea and project maybe showing in Open day Or O-week. Did we

WEEK 3

This was showing as part of our project work for week 3 mark. We were not only testing with just visual text, but also with voice and the questions showing to build another level of connection.

the idea was to create many different stories of voices in it but sadly didn't have enough time to produce it out so it was just one voice telling her experience.

I method was to work with many voice and hearing which this would build a connection to a different level to everyone that is listening to it. It makes us listen to the small details and that it helps us in a space. This was a potential idea which we are thinking and heading to o-week or even to open day if we can make it
