IT’S UNORTHODOX,  HE REALIZES.   his presence,  that is.   any encounters with his family  ———   until recently  ———   have been transient,  which holds even more true when it comes to the runt of the family.  

the fact that she’s allowing him in is a gesture kinder than he deserves.   but he’s grateful.   and he’s not about to be picky about a couch.   he’ll take anything he can get at this point.
