Moonlight Meeting || Arcelia & Kuan-yu

Arcelia preferred the night to day. There were less people to approach her and the ocean was much more lively with the same species from the day, but also many unique species that man has yet to touch. But her favorite part had to be something she had recently learned of once starting her quiet adventure on land - the sunset turning into the night sky painted with stars.

She had found that the best spot was along the beaches of the small town where she could watch the sun set and reflect off of her home. It was quiet, peaceful, and all around enjoyable for her as she sat where the tide broke, her tail occasionally flicking against the small waves that pushed the tide back and forth.

All was well until a voice crept up from behind causing the mermaid to jump, escaping back into the deeper end of the water. Her head broke the surface, momentarily only showing her scarlet eyes staring right into the stranger’s.

“I’m fine.”

She spoke up after revealing herself up to her shoulders.

With no warning, the woman leaped suddenly into the water, and Kuan-yu could almost believe her tail was just a dream. A hallucination. An example of what happened when a little too much mascara got in his eyes.

But it couldn’t be the case. Impossible.

He opened his mouth, then closed it again. All he wanted was to approach and see for sure if...if she was what he thought she was, but...

“Can I come closer, maybe?” He felt out of his element for the first time in ages - but he knew the last thing he wanted to do was upset her. No doubt she’d swim away in a flash if he irritated her too much anyway.

Makeup was a thing in the theatre, he was realizing the more weeks passed by with him in dress rehearsals for their upcoming performance, especially since they were bringing in a trainee here and there to make sure that things would run smoothly for opening night. That evening, after rehearsals, the head makeup artist had taken two new trainees through the full face they were attempting to achieve, and Kuan-yu, as expected, hadn’t been able to say no.

He’d been more amused by their faces at the conclusion when he’d told them he didn’t want to take it off. That had been worth the entire event. Why not wear eyeliner and the faint glittering gold effect across his cheeks until later?

Restless and warmed up from rehearsals and not eager to slip into the dormitory of the theatre, he found his way to the beach, rolling up the legs of his pants once he reached it and leaving his shoes where the path bled into sand. Who was going to take his shoes in this little town? He made his way toward the sea, staring straight at it, and only glanced to his side when he had nearly reached it, and saw...a...a woman with a tail? Sitting right in the rise and fall of the tide?

Kuan-yu stopped immediately, staring, lips parted. Every ounce of his manners told him not to bother whoever it might be, but... “...are you all right?”

Curious Intruder || Aria & Kuan-yu

Ah, so he was new to the town. It seemed that there was a new wave of people moving into the town. As much as that should please her, it only made her wonder if her life would get busier. If they came to the shrine, she at least hoped they’d be respectful. Lost in her thought, she had almost forgotten to answer the man’s question. 

“Yes. I’m the dragon priestess of this shrine. Thank you for complimenting it.” As much as she didn’t want to admit it, recognition of her work very much pleased Aria. At least someone had the decency to say something about the effort she put into the place. Though, she had to remind herself that it was her duty in life, anyways, and that if she were bad at it, it’d be a disgrace. 

“I am Aria. It’s nice to meet you, Kuan-yu.” An interesting name, and certainly a unique one. It will be easy to remember, at the very least. Aria finished arranging the flowers and turned to the man. “Do you know of the Dragon Gods?”

Kuan-yu inclined his head. Of course he would compliment it. Why wouldn’t he? What rude people lived in this town?

His eyes strayed from the shrine to her hands, then up her arms to her face as she turned to face him. “Dragon Gods...” He shook his head. “I’m afraid not.” A pity it was so close to the closing of the shrine itself, since he was suddenly piqued with curiosity. Then again... “Could you be persuaded to tell me about them?” It was always worth asking. And he could think of worse ways to spend his time.

Bottoms Up || Dominic & Kuan-yu

Dominic couldn’t help but chuckle when the man asked the bartender for the same drink. Finally, a man of class like himself. At least someone could appreciate the glory of the drink in his hand. It tasted great and got the job done. Dominic liked to consider himself similarly. 

“Oh! Well, welcome to the town.” Dominic shrugged his shoulders. “Well, I’m the town doctor, so I think I kind of have to like it, or I’d go crazy.” He laughed, then continued. “I only kid. I think this place is pretty great. The city life was getting to hectic for a guy like myself. You thinking of living her permanently? If so, you’d better come by so I can get a health file started for you.”

Kuan-yu hummed in amusement rather than laugh - just one low sound as he looked at the bartender with a smile, and murmured a soft word of thanks as they dropped his drink off. He examined it, tilting his head to the side. It had been a while since he had one of these, and it wouldn’t be his favorite, but hell, why not?

“That sounds a bit ominous.” He clinked his glass against Dominic’s, nodding to him in silent cheers, then took a sip. “Like a serial killer looking to bleed out a drifter before anyone else gets to meet him. That’s not what you have in mind, is it?”

He glanced at Dominic from the corner of his eye, but his lips quirked regardless. Dominic was getting a peek at that dry, toneless humor that didn’t vary one bit from his usual speaking voice.

Curious Intruder || Aria & Kuan-yu

With the sun setting, Aria was ready to close up the shrine for the night. She’d swept the back porch already and had gone around to polish one of the dragon deity shrines before she got a feeling that someone had entered the shrine. She furrowed her brows, frustrated that someone had come so late in the day. 

Silently, Aria padded through the shrine on her bare feet like she always did. The skirt of her robe dragged along the smooth, polished floor and she stopped in the doorway that lead to the main prayer room. A man she didn’t know, nor had ever seen in town before, stood within the room. At least he had the decency to remove his shoes. 

“The shrine is closing in ten minutes. I suggest you finish whatever prayer you’d like to send off. There’s no guarantee that they are listening, though.” She stepped into the room, footsteps silent. Delicate hands adjusted the flowers that were set at Terrable’s shrine, though her attention remained on the stranger. “Are you a traveler?”

The voice to his side drew his attention, and Kuan-yu looked, brow quirked. A woman stood there - lovely, actually - and he flicked his gaze over her quickly, just enough to take her in from top to bottom, as she approached one of the shrines in particular. Just as easily, his eyes transferred to the flowers she worked with, then further up to take in the particulars of this deity’s shrine.

“Ah, no. A new arrival.” He tucked his hands against the small of his back and approached her. “Admiring the state of the shrine. Are you the one who maintains it?”

He stopped near her - a respectful distance, but close enough that he could see the more delicate details of the shrine she was near. “My name is Kuan-yu.”

Of the places a doctor should not be visiting, the bar was certainly near the top of the list. That didn’t stop the small town doctor, though, as a nice drink at the end of a long work day was the most soothing thing he could think of. Dominic took his usual seat at the bar, and it seemed he wouldn’t be without some company tonight. He nodded back to the man who sat down, and turned to give a smile when he was asked a question. 

“Unfortunately, nothing very fun.” He held his glass up as a gesture to it. “Just a simple Long Island Iced Tea. Tastes alright, but gets the job done.” He chuckled and took a good look at the man. “I don’t believe we’ve met. The town’s small enough for me to know just about everyone. I’m Dominic.” He held out his hand for a shake, a toothy grin on his face. “Nice to meet you!”

Long Island Iced Tea? Fifty liquors combined into one glorious cesspool. Why not? Kuan-yu shrugged, glancing back at the bartender. He managed to catch his eye, and he thumbed at the man’s drink, then at himself, then held up one finger. The bartender nodded, and Kuan-yu nodded back as he turned to prepare it.

He missed getting carded sometimes.

“Kuan-yu.” He took Dominic’s hand and shook it. Seemed a friendly sort of man. His lips quirked in response. “You’d be right. I just pulled into town a couple of weeks ago. Have spent all my time getting settled.” He shifted to face him a little more, politely. “You like it here? It’s a beautiful place.”

Bottoms Up || Dominic & Kuan-yu

So this little town had a bar. Fair enough. Though their cuisine wasn’t quite to his tastes, there wasn’t any he couldn’t appreciate the finer parts of their drinks.

Kuan-yu settled on a stool at the bar next to another man with dark hair - with glasses, too - and he gave him a polite nod before he lifted his hand to summon the bartender. The poor guy seemed busier than expected. Kuan-yu sat there, back completely straight and no sign of impatience, as he waited.

He quirked a brow at the drink the man beside him had in his hand. “...what’re you drinking tonight?”

Curious Intruder || Aria & Kuan-yu

As briefly as he had been in this little town, Kuan-yu was still learning the layout. With the sun beginning to set toward the horizon and his own rehearsals done for the day, he tucked his hands in his pockets and began to make his rounds to a part of the town that he had yet to poke his nose into.

A shrine, he noticed first. One that was...oddly abandoned, from the outside. He slipped inside, brow quirked, and studied the decor, trying to figure out which deity such a place might represent.

On silent feet, he removed his shoes instinctively at the front, then padded inside, head tipped back in a reverent sort of silence. Even though he had no stake in the deities here, he knew enough about respect to act accordingly.
