I don't think f.fxiv gets enough credit for how they depict the faerie realm and the denizens in it. It's just so refreshing to see them outside of how they usually are shown in media as cute and good when sometimes they're neither cute, nor what anyone would call 'good' depending on what they are / their general mood. The whole place is so beautiful that you'd want to just stop and stare since it's like a dream, but it's also simultaneously extremely dangerous for people to even attempt to walk through if they have no idea how to deal with the beings that live within it (pixies especially. Especially pixies....).
it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

Rumbling purrs from a creature far too big to be making them, rain showers and lakes flood only slight. Beastial and alert, Chenlong stares across the drought ridden plains and enjoys the sight of earth drinking its desperate fill. He hears cheers of villages long fearing deaths cruel and slow grip be released with hope for a new harvest. His tail sways as clouds thicken, and rain falls harder and gaze soon falls. Smitten in its power, to lower mighty snout and whiskers to their beloved mate. A good deed to be shared.
ALTHOUGH JIANYU NO LONGER lived upon the vast plains as he used to, the joy that the people below felt was felt by him tenfold. He could remember what it was like when times were difficult – when the rains were sparse and food not as plentiful. It was one’s community that helped keep everyone strong during such a crisis, yet even so, it was still never easy. He lifted his hand, glove removed so that he could feel droplets fall into his palm, slipping free between fingertips and onto the earth in its soft song. Even as a child, he had always loved the rain. The sound of it, the scent that the clouds, that the wind itself, would carry… It always brought peace to a restless heart. He smiled; soft, warm, his gaze trained forward towards the distance for a moment longer before it shifted to fall upon the vast being beside him. Chenlong was always so breathtaking to behold; whether he be in his more human form, or in this one, looking upon him never failed to fill Jianyu’s heart with adoration.
As Chenlong lowered his head closer to him, he reached out to gently touch them, fingers brushing affectionately against scales. ❝Thank you for helping them.❞ For listening to their plight when he didn’t need to. For allowing lifegiving rains to fall upon parched soil when he could have simply turned a blind eye to it all and continued onwards to another place. Jianyu had been taken by Chenlong’s swordsmanship in the beginning, but with the passing of time, he had come to see beyond just this. Chenlong was so many, many things, though ultimately, at the end of the day, he was one thing first and foremost to him: His love. His mate. Why in the world he had chosen him in all his clumsiness would forever be a mystery to him. With a gentle nuzzle, he turned his attention back to the plains and the rain that continued to fall.

Koto holds her hand out to Nanami !
NANAMI HUFFED, A SMALL smile already tugging at his lips as he shook. All these years, and Koto still did the same thing she did when they were teens. It had confused him back then, as he couldn’t recall anyone ever just holding out their hand to him like this, but now that he was older, he had come to appreciate little moments like this one. In their line of work, one might leave this world with regrets. He would never come to regret never having allowed Koto to reach out for his hand when she offered it. Thus, he held his own out in return, gently tightening his hold upon that smaller palm as if to remind himself that he was here.
That she was too.

"Phew! Seems like the first time I've sat down in weeks!" Aalto flops down next to Calcharo and brazenly leans his head against his shoulder. A soft yawn passes over lips, half performative, half genuine, and he chuckles at himself letting himself be for a minute. "Can't seem to shake the demand for my attention, guess everyone wants the best I suppose..." Another laugh follows and lids close over golden hues, as he hums to himself. "What about you? Been as run ragged as me?"
THERE WAS A TIME where Calcharo would have instantly shied away from another moving into his space like Aalto. It would not be on purpose, but the look he would receive for his instinctual move was always one that made him feel awkward. However, he had long since become used to Aalto’s presence – so comfortable, in fact, that he didn’t so much as twitch when the other’s head came to rest upon his shoulder. Turning his head slightly to look upon the other from the corner of his eye, his lips twitched into a slight, amused smile. ❝You have been working hard lately. Where is that lazy Aalto I remember?❞ He was just teasing. After all, the world ‘lazy’ was not a term that anyone who truly knew Aalto would ever utter. To Calcharo, there were none more thorough, more focused, in their work than them when it came to gathering information. ❝I guess I should count myself lucky that despite the demands for your time, you decided to spend it here with me instead. I wonder how much I owe you.❞
It was nice being able to sit and talk with nothing else serving as a distraction. There was no looming danger in the distance (for now, at least), nor did Calcharo have anything pressing that required his attention. They could simply be. And there was something altogether refreshing about that, wasn’t there? Saying nothing for a moment, he looked away, peering off into the distance once more as a gentle breeze brushed his cheek and ruffled through his long hair. If he was mulling over the other’s question, or just enjoying the moment, it was hard to say. Perhaps it was a bit of both. ❝No more than usual. Huanglong has been fairly ‘peaceful’ since the Threnodian incident has come to pass, so I haven’t been called to aid as much as I had been. I thought I would use that time to do a bit of traveling. It’s proven to be rather lucrative.❞ There was a moment of quiet from him again, this time, his gaze shifting from the horizon to Aalto. It lingered, a hint of something soft within those normally icy depths. ❝Get some rest, Aalto. I’ll still be here.❞
He wasn’t going anywhere.
Sometimes I think about how Jianyu used to turn a blind eye to things he disagreed with when he first started out as a mercenary. He held his tongue, did as he was told for the sake of coin, and then went about his business. The him now, however, is very vocal about what he dislikes. Clients are supposed to be open about what they want, and though the guild does research to ensure that everything checks out and isn't shady, some things do slip through the cracks. He can, and will, just casually walk away from something if he doesn’t like it. Depending on what it is and his mood at the time, he may even hinder someone’s goals simply because he can or doesn't like them / what they're up to.
Jiyan would've laughed if doing so wasn't as painful as it was right now. "Don't be so hard on yourself. You did what you thought was the best course of action at the time, and..." Well, even Jiyan had trouble denying Calcharo's observation about starting a wildfire while trying to put out a fire. Coming to the Overwatch base in a rush and staying outside until he woke up would've started rumors, but rumors tended to die fast if there was nothing else to back them up. Maybe if he told those rangers something vague instead of simply walking away and hiding, then... But that was all in the past now and couldn't be changed. Jiyan's smile widened. "Leave the damage control to me. You have already done more than enough for my sake. What kind of boyfriend would I be if I couldn't extend the same reassurance and safety that you've given me?"
Indeed he was a political figure, a prominent one due to the circumstances in which he was appointed general, his past as a healer, and being the youngest general in the history of the Midnight Rangers. Their concerns were valid, but this topic was one he thought of immediately after (and before) getting in a relationship with them. "I've always been transparent with my decisions, actions, and budget allocation for the Midnight Rangers. If the ISA or Mingting officials have any concerns, I have the documentation and arguments ready to show that there's no conflict of interests or favoritism involved." Jiyan didn't say it out loud, but all the precautions he took were in case he was targeted by corrupt officials.
"The only person I'm worried for is Jinhsi. I doubt she'll let me end our next scheduled meeting unless I tell her everything, especially considering..." He made a pause then. He just said too much. Calcharo didn't need to know that the magistrate had been teasing him ever since she (and Sanhua) spotted them on a 'date' in a rooftop bar. They weren't even together then, so it wasn't a date. "..." But, looking back on it, it indeed was a date, wasn't it? Jiyan gently shook his head. "You'll have to lend me your shoulder after that meeting ends."
CALCHARO HUMMED SOFTLY. HE'D leave everything to Jiyan, then. Although, he was most curious as to how he would go about explaining everything to his Midnight Rangers. Knowing him, he’d probably just be open and honest about everything as he oftentimes was when his people were involved. Maybe upon hearing things from the source, they’d be less…well, nosey. ❝Well now, you were certainly prepared. I suppose I have nothing to worry about in that case.❞ How very like him to have planned ahead. Calcharo, though he had been here for a while assisting with issues the Rangers could not get to, was still ultimately an outsider. His organization was one that, no doubt, was constantly scrutinized by the powers that be as they sought anything that might make their suspicions grow. Of course, Calcharo was used to all this, so for him, it was just another day. He told his Hounds to be more mindful of customs within Huanglong, and to mind themselves always when out in public.
All they had to do, was continue to do what they were doing now. The suspicion might always be there, but he had learned that such was a given. Understandable, and not worth mulling over. The other’s words about Jinhsi did earn a slight raise of his brows, though…Calcharo decided it was best to leave that line of questioning be. Some things were best left unknown. ❝Heh, I’ll have a nice bowl of Jinzhou Stew for you after your ordeal.❞ Chuckling softly, he shook his head a little, leaning back against his seat. This talk did make him feel a bit better, as his goal would never be to put Jiyan in any uncomfortable position. Their relationship did not spring from being whisked away by passionate emotion. They were both too rational for that. Pros and cons were weighted and considered before there was even a slight thought of moving forward. Such was simply the way that they were.
❝With all these assurances, I don’t need to have any further concerns.❞ He fell silent, seemingly thinking a little before he spoke again. ❝I'll finish up the rest of today, and then return to headquarters first thing in the morning right before the sun completely rises. You’re recovering nicely thanks to your medics with all of them keeping you firmly glued to bed without work. My presence is no longer needed.❞

Her breaths came in ragged bursts, beads of sweat slipping down from her temples as she lay upon the ground, held beneath the strength of his weight and the blunt edge of his blade pressed close against her neck. Not hard enough to tear her flesh, yet only enough to steal the entire strength in her body and leave her trembling in the weight of her imminent defeat. As their gazes still locked upon each other’s, she could still sense the thrill of carnage ablaze within his sanguine eyes. What a dangerous privilege it was to witness the ever so controlled warrior to completely cast aside his usual restraint, giving in to his more primal impulses to relish within the intoxicating glory of battle. “…Hah,” she breathed out a resigned sigh, lamenting over the fact that she must yield to her loss in this match — allowing him to claim victory over her. “What can I say, you won, Jianyu-san. Congratulations, I suppose.” Of course, of course. This must be the reason why he had chosen to pick a duel in an open field. Without relying on esoteric assassination techniques that may gave her an edge within the darkness of night, she was left to conduct a proper combat fair and square. Even then, it seemed like outspeeding his movements alone was not enough when his strength and endurance ultimately granted him his well-earned victory, as much as she disliked admitting a defeat. “So… are you just going to keep me pinned down here, or—” Neither of them was attempting to move away from that compromising position for a good moment and that alone was enough to stir her natural impulse to tease him. “Haha. Surely, you are not enjoying this too much, right?” a mischievous grin sneaked its way onto her lips. But then, she wasn’t forgetting how she was still at a disadvantage even after defeat. “…Actually, you better move because my hair is sure getting dirty.”
HIS BREATHING JUST AS heavy, adrenaline still ran through his body in droves still. It always did when he had to expend some form of effort in combat. Whether that be through sparring or an actual life and death battle, such was a constant companion. Basking in it a little longer, bright crimson hues rested upon Tsuyuko’s gold, quietly observing her as if to see what she would do next. Even in a position like this one where her back was pressed to the ground and a blade against her neck, she was still at her most dangerous. Shinobi were said to always attempt to find some form of upper-hand in combat when out of their element, yet he saw nothing from her that said she held any hidden strategies. Victory was truly his in this instance. Yet it was not victory that he sought from their spar. No, it was just that thrill that came from giving your all.
From not holding back.
It was then he realized their current position upon her teasing words, the warmth of her form in this most precarious position… Embarrassment flowed through him now, all else instantly gone as if cold rain had suddenly begun to pour over him. ❝A-Ah, sorry, Tsuyuko. I got a little too into things for a moment...❞ Quickly he scrambled off of her form, taking back to his full height and sheathing his blade. However, he did reach out his hand for her to take if she so wished. ❝If all shinobi move like you do, they are truly a force to be reckoned with. You knew why I picked this environment, but you accepted it anyway. I wonder why…❞ This field was bright; the sprinkling of wildflowers saying gently with the breeze as sunlight fell upon them all in a soft warmth as opposed to the oppressive heat that sometimes reared itself on afternoons. There were no shadows for her to take to. No trees to hide in. Just a long, sprawling field with sheep nibbling on grass in the distance, wholly uninterested in anything else around them save for their meal.
Jianyu found himself laughing at that, head shaking as a smile tugged at his lips. What a ridiculous image that all was. ❝Oh, yes, we can’t have your hair getting too dirty. Picking all that grass out of it would be a nightmare, and I’m sure Killian might mention it if he caught sight of it.❞ He paused, if only for a few seconds. ❝Thank you for humoring me, Tsuyuko. I hope you enjoyed yourself too.❞

[ cú, for jianyu ] The wolf said nothing when he caught Jianyu red-handed, he simply stared at them, then at the backpack they were holding that didn't belong to them, and then back at them. Then, after a few seconds, he just sighed and raised his arms. "Alright, come here. I'll pat your head and gently rub circles behind your ears and jaw. I already do it to everyone else here so, if anyone walks in, they'll think you're indulging me rather than the other way around." That wasn't entirely true as only Tomoe did it, and she was very polite about the whole thing. Arash and Percy only patted his head and let him pat theirs. And Nagayoshi still jumped back 3 meters whenever he tried to nuzzle them. But, well, what mattered was that they were all informed!
OF ALL THE PEOPLE… Why was Cu even around?! He swore that the young wolf always caught him off guard somehow when he least expected it. And now, he was once again, in a situation. ❝Listen…❞ He didn’t even have a chance to finish what he intended on saying before the other wolf continued onwards. What was said was ten times more embarrassing than being caught with another’s backpack in hand. Sometimes Jianyu wished that lighting would just part the clouds and strike him down at a moment’s notice to save him from wanting to combust on spot. He stared for a good long while, silence filling the space between them as nothing was said – not even a whisper. How much time passed? Seconds? Minutes? Gently placing the backpack down with a soft thump back upon the ground, he sighed loudly, lifting his hand to brush through the white of his hair. ❝Has anyone told you that you’re embarrassing?❞ Probably. Cu seemed the type to hear that quite a bit. However, Jianyu had a feeling those words just emboldened him rather than served as a deterrent.
He could imagine that toothy grin…
❝I’m fine.❞ Perfectly fine! Nothing was going on at all! ❝You and Lupa worry about me too much. As the oldest, it should be me worrying about all of you most of all.❞ Lupa who was packless, Cu who was…well…he wasn’t quite sure what to make of Cu, but that was besides the point. ❝Anyway, I’m going to go and make sure the food is being prepared correctly. It wouldn’t do for any of us to get sick.❞ Not that Percival needed any assistance with anything considering he seemed to cook well enough. This was just his excuse to save face.

do you have any headcanons ( for any muse(s) ) that you haven’t shared yet — and if so, care to tell us ?
Oh this is kinda hard kfjdhsfs. I think of headcanons on the fly most of the time unless something has me like, "I gotta talk about this!" because inspiration smacks me in the face, or something just comes to me out of nowhere while I'm watching a show, playing a game, ect. So there are plenty of headcanons I haven't shared since they haven't come to mind yet. But I can put a few down that do while typing this out.
Jianyu:
He loves combat far more than he lets on. Despite coming across as uninterested most of the time, this would be a lie. He loves the thrill of battle. The bloodshed, the adrenaline, the fight to survive -- it ignites his spirit like no other. However, he sees these desires as inappropriate, and thus, maintains an abnormal amount of self-control until he fights someone who can breech past this illusion. That's when the mask is removed.
Nanami:
Though technically uninvolved with the school, the students know him well enough that they tend to accidentally slip into calling him 'teacher' even though he adamantly tells them he is not. Despite acting otherwise, there is something about that word that does bring a near smile to his lips. He may not be a teacher in the sense that he works there, but he does offer advice when asked just as he did with Yuji.
Percival:
Although he loves his king with his entire heart, he is not above telling them that they are wrong if they say or do something he disagrees with. Percival is loyal -- no one can question that. He is a knight through and through, upholding the values of his fellow Knights of the Round and then some. Yet because he cares so much for his comrades, he feels it would be remiss of him to not tell his most honest thoughts if ever put in a situation where he should. Kindhearted he may be, he does not hold back.
Neuvillette:
He misses his fellow dragons sometimes. With his memory restored along with his powers, there are times he finds himself peering off into the distance, recalling a distant past that will never be. It is not frequent as his mind is often rooted in the present, though this does not change the fact that he is quietly a sentimental sort.

It started as a small, ridiculous thought that came to mind one day. Easily ignored – easily brushed aside. However, with the passing of days, that thought began to manifest more and more. Although Calcharo was not one to act upon whim, he did find himself doing that when Jiyan was involved. Perhaps it was his reactions that made him keen to doing so. Or maybe it was just because he was forever curious to see what he would say or do when met with something so wholly outside of what he was used to. Honestly, the real reason might have been quite simple: it was amusing. Quietly did he listen to Jiyan speak, occasionally offering his input, though his gaze slowly drifted elsewhere. Lingering. Without so much as a warning to his intention, he leaned in close, lips parting as teeth sank gently into the other’s ear. Just enough to add a bit of pressure, tongue brushing against the lobe before he pulled back. “Heh, interesting.” What a vague response.
Jiyan had recently gotten his hands in a book that recorded the folk remedies and treatments of Mt. Firmament, courtesy of his mother. The book didn't just list them, the author even went as far as explaining the history of them and included detailed descriptions of the medicinal plants. Jiyan found it brilliant and thrilling. Whenever he was asked what he found so fascinating about his medicine books, this came to mind. Learning new things and how different ailments were treated with what was available in the area was entertaining and eye-opening. The Sagaci Springs had an entire chapter dedicated to it so, needless to say, he had to show it to Calcharo. If the book had been published before their stay at the isle, they would've saved time trying to figure out a winner for their little bet. But, then again, the memories he made with them then are ones he cherishes and looks back with a smile.
He was going to ask Calcharo if they ever thought of returning to Mt. Firmament or if there were other places they wished to visit first when, all of a sudden, they leaned closer and did something completely unexpected but not unwelcome.
Jiyan's shoulders tensed and his breath hitched, an involuntary reaction he couldn't stop himself from doing as teeth nipped gently at his ear. The sensation was completely different from when they stole kisses from one another or when Calcharo touched his tacet mark. Was this how it felt for them when he teased them in the tent a while back? Then, he should... "..." Golden eyes closed and shoulders relaxed despite the tingling sensation crawling from his ear to the back of his neck and head. Strange as it was, he felt like melting on the spot. A small sigh passed his lips when Calcharo pulled away. He heard them say something, but he wasn't paying much attention. Then he turned his head slightly to the side but, instead of scolding them, he sighed.
"Why did you stop?"
It was only after he saw how amused his boyfriend looked that Jiyan started to piece things together but, despite feeling the heat crawl up his face, he couldn't bring himself to frown. He just blinked a few times and then turned to his book. What had they been talking about just now? He was... distracted. "I'm sorry, I need a moment. There was something I wished to say but then forgot." Something he won't be able to remember for as long as Calcharo is by his side and staring at him because it's difficult to think when he can barely hear his thoughts over the sound of his heartbeat. "How about..." Eyebrows furrowed as he tried to find a hint of annoyance or bafflement in himself, anything to get back at the mercenary or at least 'hiss' at them like he did when they thought it would be a good idea to touch his tacet mark. He couldn't.
The truth was that he would've let them do a lot more.
Sometimes I imagine that he is a hunter who lives in the forest in a cabin, and he has fierce trained wolves.
❝ I'll write my own story. ❞ ( jianyu )
Gilded gaze settled upon his direction, momentarily looking away from setting sun in the distant horizon. Soft bright hues of the sunset glow reflected on the sparkling body of water that extended before them; a beautiful scenery to behold before ending the day with a dinner in one of the most renowned taverns within this town. Seated upon the soft ground at the edge of the lake, with Khasar resting soundly in the gap between them, they were spending their time by exchanging thoughts and experiences — for Jianyu would usually make an engaging conversation partner.
‘I’ll write my own story.’ He said, with a quiet resolve woven into his words. Tsuyuko fell quiet in response, wasn’t quite sure what made him state that out loud. Had some sort of divine inspiration struck him out of nowhere?
“…Hm, quite bold words you got right there, Jianyu-san.” Her eyes would then look forth once more to the sun sinking in the far reaches of the sky, a prelude to the twilight. “When you say you want to write your own story, have you thought of how do you want to be remembered as?” Although he was not always bound by conventional idealism and sense of justice, she had always thought that he would still make an ideal hero. The man didn’t possess a single greedy or villainous bone in his body — let alone be able to leave out people in trouble! Especially when it came to children and the elderly. Traveling alongside him had taught her plenty of important lessons in life, though no amount of experience could entirely wipe out the instinctual opportunistic nature of a little fox.
“You know, Jianyu-san, I think you would make a pretty damn good hero material. Everyone else probably thinks the same way too.”
A small pebble by the ground grasped into one hand and flicked it into the lake, where it broke the stillness on the lake’s surface and sent water ripples drifting into motion.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard you calling yourself one… but eh, a true hero never really prides himself as one, doesn’t he?”
↪ 𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐀 / @guhamun ( jianyu )
I was thinking about Cal and how he's so unused to 'nice gestures' like hand holding or something that's just non-violent that he instantly wants to jerk away from it out of instinct. It's foreign. It's weird, and he's just not sure how he's supposed to react to it. He has a bubble around him that is never breeched aside from in the heat of battle, so that's what he knows best. Yinlin on the other hand, isn't really that much different from him either considering her lone wolf tendencies wrought from being a spy. However, unlike him who makes this obvious without meaning to, she plays into in a way where you wouldn't know.

they were sitting next to each other after a sparring match. out of nowhere, eden was holding her hand out towards him with no explanation, gloved palm up. aureate orbs staring at the other with a certain expectation. realizing the said expectation would likely go unmet, she simply fulfilled it by taking his hand into hers and returned her eyes back forward, legs swinging a little. still not a single explanation. he could, of course, pull back anytime. her grip wasn't that tight. [ eden to mydei ! ]
EDEN HAD GOTTEN MUCH better since the last time they spared. It was impressive, really, how quickly she learned and grew in combat. Some warriors took much longer to learn from their mistakes and fix them, but she was not like most warriors. Eden was in a whole different category of her own. Catching his breath, he had made to lean back, but before he had the opportunity to do so, he felt lithe flinger slipping between the spaces of his own, the warmth of a palm pressed against his. The touch was an unfamiliar one to him as not many would be so brave as to take the hand of the Crowned Prince of Kremnos, but it was not unpleasant (never unpleasant). For once, he didn’t wear the cold, metal gauntlets that hid then away from view, and so he wondered…was Eden acting on a whim? Had she been curious about doing this for a while, acting now if only because the opportunity presented itself? There were many questions with just as many varied answers to go along with them, though, in the end, Mydei decided none of that really mattered.
The moment was.
Thus, he didn’t question. Didn’t say anything. Instead, he merely looked upon the connection of their hands for a few passing seconds before looking ahead just as she did. Although Amphoreus was on borrowed time thanks to the efforts of Kephale, he would look off onto those passing clouds, not with dread, but with a quiet sense of peace.
