Takechiyo, lowered his cup, frowning. "Ah, you're curious about my parents." He shifts in place, hands folded on his lap.
"It was the usual affair, our relationship that is. Well, at least for our class and status. I... was not born out of love, I was born out of purpose. My parents, they had an abnormal relationship all things considered. Usually shogun's have concubines alongside their partner. Future heirs come from either party. But my father had none. He only had my mother. He loved her very much." He explained.
"With this in mind, I was born sickly. Very much so. I spent my childhood bedridden, with my caretaker and tutor by my side. Fuku raised me. Not my parents. Caretakers are common with our family but she and I were inseparable. Then, my little brother was born, and my mother threw herself into raising him. She didn't have an easy life, and so having a healthy child she could raise. I think she just was overwhelmed with joy. Perhaps my parents did love me, perhaps they did care. But I was ill equipped to be the heir due to my health. So they poured their attention to the family's politicial future, my brother Kunimatsu."
Takechiyo lifted the cup to drink, lowering it back down again with a faraway stare. The young man didn't say much, just smacking his lips. "This changed after my grandfather named me heir. Although... I really wouldn't like to discuss that all too much. You must understand, it's a rather sensitive subject." Takechiyo offered a small smile.
"Oh it's good, trust me. Not many people are like her at all." Taiyou shrugged, leaning against the wall. He frowned a bit, he wasn't sure even after all these years his thoughts on Himiko. But he knew one thing for certain. She, more than anyone else, was interlinked with him.
"Her name is Himiko. Her original name, she's a Yōkai, she changes identity with the times. I never really fully knew how, but she would take preestablished identities..." He began, gaze growing wistful. "She was the Queen of Yamatai in ancient times. Yamatai, was an ancient kingdom in Japan. Her brother Hiruko and his guardian spirit, Murakumo, was corrupted by something evil. Mixed with his own ambition, he felt a calling to both spirit stones and crucinite, powerful elemental shards which come from Hell itself. He wanted war and wanted that power for war. Spirit stones are not neutral entities, they form from death. It's the essence of a human. But an addictive substance. It's like a drug." He explained.
"From the year 247 BC, We banished him into the Eternal Rift beyond realms, and throughout time he found the next person who inherited Murakumo, my little brother. And possessed him to commit great evil." Murakumo manifested then at the mention of itself, coming to nudge Taiyou to pet him. Taiyou did so, gaze wandering back to the past. Almost disassociative in a way. Talking about Hiruko did that to him anyway. "She also traded her humanity that day. She waited, across time for me. For when I would be born, and inherit Kusanagi... Then she'd find me once he sent me back in time to 1572. She'd give me the guiding mirror and set me on this path... Himiko is the reason I am the way I am today. But she gave up all of herself to stop her brother from the harm he was doing. Gave her life for it too." He sighed. Taiyou decided to crouch down to Murakumo, giving it a pet and a scratch beneath it's chin as the spirit sat contently.
"I consider her a soulmate. In the most platonic sense ever." Taiyou adds that last part rather quickly. "She also has this way of making people ask themselves things. Himi often actually unnerves people because of it. She's far older than me, and she's spent those lives protecting the Spirit Tree her brother wanted to harvest for power. Gave up her humanity, her bonds in that era for this cause. I'm not saying you've done anything that grand- but..." Taiyou stands up, giving them a smile. "The way I can only tell half of you is here, she's also like that. The other parts of you are in the cosmos, amongst the stars, hers are nestled within the Yōkai realm. I think, anyway. See? I've known her since I was eighteen and she's known me since she was, probably, in her early twenties back in 247 BC. And I still don't know entirely how she works. So no, to reiterate, it's not a bad thing at all to remind me of her. I care for her very much."
Zora takes another look at Taiyou. Knowing that this comparison was apparently a good one was enough for them to be curious. Clearly, there had to be more of a story to whoever this friend was to Taiyou.
They listened, noticing the name Himiko and her taking established identities over time, making them really attentive to what he was sharing about her life.
"Ah.. I see." They were indeed following the story, but they didn't want to say much, just letting the details of the context settle in as they registered other aspects of what he was sharing with them.
Hearing that she had given up her life, so much of her humanity to truly stop some evil, to really make a difference in what could be such an overwhelming situation ... that was admittedly admirable. Especially since her actions were crucial to Taiyou's presence in the current day.
"I suppose with her actions and all that she has done.. well, it's no wonder that's she's so incredibly important to you. Platonically of course. " It's when Zora hears him talk about Himi making people ask themselves things - that's where the lines start to connect.
Because they had remembered people noticing that they had a way of making people reconsider things often in a way that people didn't expect. Perhaps these were the parallels that were being drawn and as Taiyou kept talking, that seemed to be more and more apparent.
There is something about the way that their starry nature, their presence in the stars being compared to Himiko's presence in the Yokai world that did bring some comfort to Zora. It made them feel like maybe, maybe there was something that was valuable about that half-there kind of feeling that they couldn't help but embody no matter what.
"I see. I see.. Thank you so much for sharing that with me honestly. It's been really interesting to learn more about her and .. seeing that parallel at least in the way people reconsider things.. and that half-there presence, I.. I think it's a nice think to remind you of her. And so I do consider that high praise, thank you. "
He shrugs and waves a hand. "It's no big deal." Taiyou says, tapping his fingers along his side. "I have no idea where she is. She died, but her spirits still somewhere, so I guess she's even more incorporeal than she may have been when we first met. Either way. Himiko would like you that's for sure." He nodded.
"She loves foreigners anyway. Thinks they're absolutely delightful. Granted, Himiko is much older than me, so immigration and cross cultural meetings were something she saw but not to the extent as it exists today. But not it's necessarily that, I think she'd understand that common ground. You know, being half here half elsewhere. I think she'd be more than happy to meet someone like her. Himiko's never really met anyone like her. If I find her again, I'll be sure to put you in touch. If you like stories, she has thousands of years worth." Taiyou reached for his vape, but gestured his hand. Silently asking them if he was okay to smoke.
"She's also probably a much better tourguide than I am of Japan. Ancient queens make great historians." He laughs, lowering his hands again. "Have you got friends like that?" Taiyou asks, tilting his head. "You know, friends that are incredibly strange, probably even ancient beings? You run into immortals often?"

"Oh no, I, as Taiyou have time travelled before." The man started, waving his hand as he settled his elbow against the table, lazily holding his chopsticks. "It was after the COVID restrictions lifted in Japan, so I took some time off to go travelling. A lot of death meant a lot of spirit stones."
"So what happens when spirit stones all meet in one place? Crazy crazy things. I got sent back to 1910, when I was being hunted by the Meiji government. I met myself back then, and first of all. Why did no one tell me I looked shit? Since I was on the run, I couldn't keep up appearances but, not even a trim? It must've been so bad I don't remember cutting my own hair..." He lifts some of his yakisoba up, staring at the noodles. "Second of all. You can imagine with how much I've time travelled I would not be surprised seeing myself. The other me. I'm calling him Daiyo. Since that's another way my name's translated into English. You know. Just a way for you to understand what I'm saying."
Taiyou shoved some of the yakisoba in his mouth, immediately covering it to continue talking. "Point is. Daiyo looked a mess... I actually forgot about this moment since dying from the Meiji era, so I had no idea what to expect. We were ambushed by some assassins that were after me and since I had managed to secure a tiny little longhouse in Shimonoseki, we fled there. It was nothing much just enough to lay low for a couple of days..." He swallowed the mouthful, staring out the window and towards the passing cars.
"The two of us talked for a while, it was a good experience. Insightful. Really insightful." Taiyou comments, shrugging. "We talked about what the future was like, I warned him about vapes. Didn't listen, I'm still addicted. Oh yeah, and then we-" He immediately stopped himself, eyes flaring wide in realisation. The man immediately cleared his throat. "Then we went to bed. I was there for a week, it was kind of fun brushing up on my history with immersion you know?"

⚛️ - It's not pride month where I'm from just yet, but I figured I should let this blog have a two month pride theme (since pride is in July in the UK)
But alas, just your beloved reminder that the muse this blog is centered on is a gay man!
Not necessarily a proud one just yet, but he is one. He's getting better at that whole thing ‼️
And also the mun for this page is ALSO a gay man, and I'm also transgender so HEART ♥️.
The muses over at @corpossecos are a vast array of sexualities and genders I don't think I have a single straight muse. LOL
I wanted to also use this pride post to highlight the trans community as I'm Trans. I need everyone to seriously stick by us because our rights are under attack, and if they attack us you will always be next. The first pride was a riot, and the first pride parade in the UK chose it's date to be the closest Saturday to the anniversary of Stonewall to show our solidarity.
In the spirit of those organisers back then, fight for us, fight with us. We can't survive this horrific time alone.

"So, I've time travelled a lot."
The man began, flopping back to lay on the floor of his living room. "But the guiding mirror I used also allowed me to go to the Eternal Rift. It's a weird sort of buffer between realms. Humans need artifacts or a guardian spirit to access it- Yōkais can just come and go freely."
"So when I was in the Heian era briefly, there was this warrior named Tatsumaro. I met him because we were at the hot springs together. But then he asked me to go help him get back home. I was like, nineteen? In retrospect. I should not have helped him. But we'll get there." He flops his hands down. "You have to understand, Kyoto I came to see due to what Hiruko was doing was- crazy. It was snowing, ice everywhere in June. Things were flooding. I didn't think anything of it."
Taiyou lifted himself up. "So there I go, at nineteen following this guy and killing Yōkai to reach his home. We get there. His house is a complete mess. Except one thing." Taiyou lifted a finger. "His poop hot spring. This is not a joke. He had a hot spring full of it. Died immediately from his injuries in there. I was overwhelmed with how gross it was, I went back into the rift. But you'll never guess what." Taiyou hung his head, shoulders shaking from laughing.
"Behind our blacksmith. There's a sewage pit. I went to go empty the waste from my area of the rift as I had to live there. I go down. Guess who's there. That is right. The poop guy. He was there. Up until my death, I had a poop squatter in the small ethereal realm I was camping in. He was far from me and I didn't see him at all unless I went to go dispose of waste. But he latched onto me, for some reason." Taiyou barked his laughter, holding his stomach. "And that's how I got a poop stowaway!"
So, why is Taiyou's magic region-locked to JPN only?
Taiyou practices a system of magic called Onmyōdō. In the N1oh games, this functions as the only system of magic available for the player to utilise.
In game, you prepare talismans at a Kodama shrine and everytime you pray at the shrine you gain your used talismans back.
Taiyou, an Omnyōdō practitioner, (Which are called Onmyōji.) is restricted to the presence of these shrines in close proximity to him as he cannot restock his prepared talismans reliably without them. He can certainly use other means but these only can restore one or two uses, for full access he needs a shrine.
Since in game you can only refresh your magic at a shrine, Taiyou is limited to this. (as I wrote his magic to be tied into the gameplay mechanics for both fun and general combat balancing for him. N1oh protagonists are overpowered.)
Kodama are known to wander, and in the modern day they definitely could just wobble onto a plane and go elsewhere outside of Japan. But managing to get a sole Kodama to replenish his talisman supply is very tricky to do as it may not have the sole power alone depending on how elaborate and powerful the talismans are, and Taiyou is known to pack a punch.
Therefore, he voluntarily limits himself to Japan. Where there are an abundance of lived in shrines so that he can reliably replenish his talisman supply. Although he hates travelling, he would love to go abroad again, but his magic system forces him to stay in Japan. This is why some hunters consider his methods outdated (also because of how old he is.) but shit man. Have you seen what a hellshock talisman does to a room full of men? Old man's still got it.
Maybe one day he'll learn Kido like Himiko utilises, but in the meanwhile he's at those shrines frantically preparing his sloth talismans.

"I know I'm from there, but, I don't live in Tokyo for a reason, it's a long story though."
Taiyou frowned, staring into the abyss that was his teacup. "Once upon a time, I had a childhood friend. His name was Abe Koushin. Kou and I, when I was allowed to play that was, were inseparable. I cared a lot for him, I never got the chance to tell him that before Kusanagi sent me back in time to protect me from Kunimatsu." He furrowed his brows.
"When... The split happened. The man that came back wasn't me. It was Iemitsu. Kou knew that it wasn't me that came back. He tried, he really did- to pretend otherwise, but the man that took my place was so different. Way too different, differing in ways you could not even ignore. So Koushin eventually confronted the Shogun. He organised for them to meet privately like we always used to at the bay. He knew he likely would've been executed for it but he wanted to know what happened to me."
Taiyou sighed, leaning on the table. Thumb coming to his teeth to gnaw on his nail.
"It escalated, and Koushin saw that the shogun wasn't exactly a full human being. Iemitsu didn't execute him, he murdered him. With his bare hands, he drowned him that day. Koushin hurt his pride and could've revealed the truth that I was effectively dead." He gravely recounted, scrunching his nose.
"He drowned him in that bay and left his corpse there. It was swept under the rug, Iemitsu had the power to do so anyway. But Koushin didn't forget, how could he not? He was of the Abe clan, as in Abe No Seimei, Abe. Koushin was not an accomplished mage in life. But in death, he became something powerful, an Onryō."
Taiyou lost his appetite as soon as this started, he gently tapped his teacup. Hoping to get the will to lift and drink some.
"It took some time, but his ghost found out I was back. He found me in 2006. Koushin was an Onryō the likes I had never seen before. Although, I suppose an Onryō is always worse to deal with when you're the subject of it's ire, so there's that." He bitterly laughed. "That fight took as much out of me as fighting my little brother. Kou was ruthless, I only survived because of luck, I think. He eventually was defeated, I had to hold him so he could see that it was me. That his Takechiyo was alive. He needed to pass on to the next world without anything keeping him here. That was what did it. Seeing me up close."
Taiyou held back some details, like how Koushin had held his face. How he could still see what Iemitsu did to him all these years later. How it all kept him up at night twenty years later.
"I couldn't do it after that. Too many memories. Kyoto isn't much better but, it's not like my home. My home's different."
That detail did seem to help. His eyes sparkled as he finally seemed to connect the dart. Although that faded fast as he lost his train of thought. Oh well, he seemed to be getting closer to understand it. "Oh so you are incorporeal in some manner?" He asks genuinely, tapping his chin. "Well then, I'm happy that that you've been able to stay together... I know you may not really have a choice. You know the saying, which is especially true for us in Japan. The nail that sticks out is always hammered down."
He mused about his construction career in the 1990s, sighing at how no matter what job he took, he knew he couldn't hide the fact he was that nail. Not even his own hammer could slam himself back in line.
Taiyou sighs and shakes his head. "It is a shame. To conceal ones true nature is taxing thankless work. It damages the soul I'd say." He shrugs, cutting his usual poetry short. He stared at Zora in the way that was usual for this man, which was deep analysis. Never intentionally cruel, always inquistive.
"Has any human been able to handle you when you are in this state?" He enquired gently, tilting his head softly. "I do not just mean the actual processing of that information. But the emotional one. Has anyone been able to see that as just a facet of yourself or-" The man lifts a hand up. "No No- I'm prying, that's not my business. Please, feel free to ignore that question in it's entirety. It's just-" he almost reaches for his vape, but decides against it. He'd wait until it was a better time to ask if they had any issues.
"It is not often you meet someone genuinely fascinating! Especially when you've been alive for as long as I have!" He chuckled, waving his lifted hand gently. "Even if you did not unravel, even if you were like the rest of us in matter, you are not like many in manner. You make people ask themselves things..." Taiyou trailed off, he thought about his old friend Himiko. How she was the same. The ancient queen had a knack of reaching beyond your body and into your psyche. Yōkai abilities aside, she was a source of reflection. She existed beyond humanity stared back from that precipice never with arrogance but with a simple suggestion that not everything was as black and white as it may have first appeared. He gave them a reassuring smile
"You remind me a lot of an old friend. That's all."
That sense of light in his eyes, Zora noticed that there was some small bit of recognition, proving at least that being more apparent in terms of what they had been talking about was .. useful enough. Asked about being incorporeal, Zora nods in response.
"Yeah, basically.. I tend to be at the base line more made of cosmic energy than anything else. And so it can render me pretty incorporeal under varying circumstances." It's also why they tend to be wary of getting injured - although they could very much take the pain, the resulting reveal of their truly unusual nature would make things worse than the initial harm in the first place.
"Right, I've definitely gotten better at being able to hold myself together in a way that works for moving through this world." It is frustrating that they have had to do so, but they do find other ways to claim that sense of self that might otherwise be denied.
"Indeed.. the work is tiring.. so honestly, I do let some things slip in general just because I can't be bothered to hide everything but what I do show, people tend to easily overlook because they just think I'm weird in general. So .. I tend to use my leeway a lot with that to get by."
Zora pauses, when he asks about any human being able to handle you in this state... they grimace a little bit at the thought. It brought back many, many memories of people not being able to handle them or many of their smaller peculiarities over the years. So although Taiyou was trying to avoid fully asking the question, the impact of it being suggested was enough for Z to be thinking about a whole lot at the moment.
"Um. I ... not really. No. Not emotionally. I have made friends who are able to handle it but .. they're not ordinary humans so.. my reality impacts who I choose to get close to and who I really don't a lot of the time. "
That was about as much as they were willing to share about it - and they purposefully turned their head, looking off into the distance for a little bit before sighing again.
Zora wasn't going to dwell on it, not here. Not now. They certainly had feelings about their whole way of moving through the world but they weren't going to divulge too much to someone they were still getting to know even if he did find them genuinely interesting.
Which.. counted for something, they supposed.
"Not being like many in manner.. well, I have to admit that is something I have heard about me before. Even from people I have worked with. I think you're correct about it although I never really know what to do with that information."
Sometimes people say it as a compliment, other times people say it as a way to draw some distance between themselves and Zora. So they are never sure.... what is intended by the point of such statements even if they are pretty accurate as to how Zora provokes some thought, some consideration in people that they might not otherwise.

I spent a lot of time dwelling on this one. I think Taiyou would be a Blue Tiger Eye!
They're gems that are supposed to be known to promote clarity, insight and intuition and Taiyou being Takechiyo put back together means he has a lot of clarity on everything he's gone through and then he's also very wise beyond his years. Although god forbid he listens to his own advice.

Takechiyo's favourite animal is dogs. This is due to the fact that Kusanagi, well, looks like a dog. (He looks a lot like a Japanese spitz, in my opinion.)

All of his variants inherited this preference, however notably so was Iemitsu. Iemitsu had a particular affection for dogs fuelled by his grief of losing Kusanagi by his side. This rubbed onto his children, most notably Tokumatsu. (The future fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.)
Tsunayoshi's affection for dogs became a problem in his later years, when his obsession with dogs would cause quite a lot of issues, he himself being known as a the 'Dog Shogun' pejoratively.
Tsunayoshi's obsession with dogs was notorious, but he reportedly kept 50,000 dogs as pets and also set out a decree in which the death penalty would be enacted for anyone who harmed a dog without state permission.
So safe to say, this family loved their dogs. A lot.
He could not remember the last time he had ran this way — last time was it in high school? Cross-country run? It feels liberating nonetheless however he felt the tug on his shirt, the normie human turned around to look at the man with a raised brow. "Are we safe now?" That was the question he decided put forth when his eyes met the latter's, looking around to affirm the situation.
Supernatural things never fail to spook especially he is at been the receiving end of observing it back to back. His heart made a leap when he observed the hammer disappeared — this is similar to him watching a certain character named Noctis storing his weapom away. Spooky. "So you're telling me, the Nue is attracted to my core? What, do I have to call Minamoto Yorimasa now?" He is no samurai that could slay yokai, he is a human at core. Sighing, "I really need cleansing" He moaned to the ground. "Yeah, I would take that advice and never get out of the house anymore. Would that help?"
