NHL Male Reader Chapter 3
Master list, mood board, playlist
Contains: Swearing, yelling, high key child abuse, nervousness, locker room behavior lol, 6-year age gap relationship, fighting (hockey game)
Summary: Your first game as a member of the Sharks is a total success. So is your relationship with your new girlfriend, but the media and fans don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
A few months had gone by, and you were well done with preseason.
You had been gotten very serious with Brittney, the two of you just seemed to click.
You went out to eat together, went to the beach, watched the edits she sent you, and even started dating.
But you had been putting on the back burner recently, focusing on the upcoming game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
You let Brittney know that you were going to be out of the state for a little while and hoped onto a plane with Micheal. Because you were still 17, he traveled with you often and stayed in all of the apartments and hotels with you.
It was convenient because he was essentially your coach. It usually felt more like that than a father figure anyways.
He had been teaching you your whole life, and it was normal for NHL players to have their own private coaches anyway. So, the next day after you touched down in Chicago, you and Micheal headed to the rink that the San Jose Sharks reserved for their players.
Practicing with Micheal always made you nervous.
You knew he was doing it to push you; he always said that it was his purpose.
The two of you had been working technique and improving your setups and shots for almost 2 hours in the empty rink.
You were sweating despite the cold rink, it was making your equipment rub against your skin uncomfortably, your hair sticking to your neck and face glowing under the rink lights.
The only thing you could hear was sound of your blades cutting the ice, the slap of your hockey stick against the puck, and Micheals remarks from the bench were he stood.
The game against the Blackhawks was tomorrow. And he was pissed.
You skated back to him after taking a shot at the net for the 100th time, dodging through the pucks that littered the ice as you came back to him.
"What the fuck was that? Do you think this is a joke?" He asked, arms crossed.
You shook your head, "No I-" you started, but he cut you off.
"The sequence. Again." He asked, eyes narrowed.
"Around the hurdle, puck through it, stay on outside edge, switch to back-" You tried to tell him but of course, he cut you off again.
"What are you? A fucking rapper? Go skate it correctly," He raised his voice, gesturing harshly away with his hand.
You gripped your stick and picked up your feet, skating away and doing the sequence yet again with as much precision and efficiency as you could.
But his back was turned to you, his hand against the railing.
Micheal quick turned around, somthing was in his hand.
And it was coming right at you.
You ducked down quickly, almost slipping on the ice as whatever it was whizzed past you.
You stood up and looked to see what it was.
Your spare hockey skate to be exact.
Your wide eyes darted back to Micheal, who was standing there calmly, hand on his chin while he was thinking.
"Why do you supposed I just threw that at you?" He asked, unphased.
"Uh- I don't know," you stammered.
"Sure you do," he half nodded.
"Because..tomorrows a big deal?" You answered.
"Correct," he shot and roughly rounded the bench and stepped onto the ice, stomping onto the carpeted area and getting in your face.
"If you deliberately sabotage all the work I've done for you, I will f*ck you like a pig, do you understand me?" He raged.
"Use your f*cking words!" He yelled into your ear.
"I understand," you said, eyes locking onto the bench where he used to be standing, not wanting to look at him.
"You are a worthless, friendless, little peace of sh*t, whose mommy and daddy died when they realized you weren't Sidney f*cking Crosby, and is now weeping and slobbering all over the equipment I PAID for! So for the final father f*cking time, say it louder!" He roared in your face.
"I understand!" you half shouted, your chest catching from all of the pressure you were under.
You felt his stare linger on you as he began to back up.
But then someone's phone rang.
And you knew it was neither of yours, Micheal always made you keep it in the locker room.
You spun around, eyes finding the door.
There was Will and Macklin.
Will was trying desperately to hang up the phone.
You knew they saw everything.
Your face burned in embarrassment.
"We are done here." Micheal's voice spoke up. He was talking to you, not them.
You tore your eyes away from the two boys and skated off the ice over to Micheal and grabbed your bag, heading to the locker room without bothering to take your skates off yet.
You prayed they wouldn't say anything. Prayed they wouldn't bring it up or make fun of you.
You didn't hear from them for the rest of the day.
You saw them the next morning though, the three of you walking into the locker room for the game, all dressed in your nice suits.
You all pretended like nothing happened, just talking about the game that was coming up and reviewing the plan.
You were grateful for it too, you didn't want to think about it right before the game or have to deal with it when today was so important.
The first game of the season.
Macklin's voice broke you out of the beginning spiral.
"Want to throw the football with me and Smitty? To loosen up a little?" He asked, looking down at you as you sat in your stall.
You nodded, "Yeah sure," and took one of your earbuds out, tucking the iPod into your pocket and turning the song - Starman by David Bowie - down.
"Is that an iPod?" Will said giggling as he grabbed the football.
You laughed and followed after them, "It's less distracting than a phone. It's good for before games," you said shrugging as you smiled.
"I guess that's fair," Mack said and took his spot in the hallway.
Will immediately whipped the football at him and Macklin tried to catch it, it bounced off of his hands from the force.
You all started laughing and eventually it was your turn, Macklin chucked it at you and you tried to catch it, only holding it for a second as it stung your palms before dropping it.
You all laughed and the noise caused the coach to come outside.
"I can't believe you guys are playing this right now, your going to break your fingers before the game even starts," he said, only half joking.
You smiled and pelted the football at Will, who somehow managed to catch it.
Will smirked and gave the coach a look, "Can't teach that," he said.
You all snickered and the coach shook his head, smiling, "yeah yeah, impressive. But I'm serious lets relax,"
The three of you reluctantly agreed and eventually made your way back into the locker rooms to get ready.
You were locked in, visualizing as much as you could while Man in the Box by Alice In Chains played in your headphones as you laced up your skates.
Everyone was hyper focused, getting into the zone as the coaches music, In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins, played over the teams speaker.
You were starting to hear fans make their way into the stadium.
It was getting louder and louder, tensions were high and your adrenaline was through the roof.
All of you got into a line, the cold air hitting your chin and neck as you stepped out of the locker room.
The lights were flashing and there was people lining the seats with signs surrounding the tunnel.
The stadium was sold out for the first game of the season.
All of you ran out and skated onto the ice, the announcers and fans going crazy as you started to warmup.
You were dialed in, drowning out the noise of the fans with your own thoughts as you focused on controlling the puck as you went around the rink.
You were so focused you barely realized Ivar came up to you.
"You see this?" He said with his Swedish accent, gesturing to the fans.
You were about to give him a sarcastic "obviously" before you realized what he was talking about.
There were dozens of fans with posters.
Posters with your name and number on it.
"Y/N (leave your girlfriend and) MARRY ME"
You smiled, chuckling a little as you looked at all of the different ones.
They were even fans wearing your jersey.
Then you saw another sign.
"23 can I get your number a puck?"
You laughed and gave Ivar a smirk before dribbling the puck across the ice, working your way over the fan.
You picked the puck up with you stick and made eye contact with the 3 girls who were sitting on the bench with the sign.
Their eyes lit up and they got to their feet, reaching their hands up as you used your stick to toss the puck over the glass.
You watched them cheer and squeal before you skated away.
It was a cute moment, and you were flattered.
You were starting this game.
After the pucks were cleared off the ice and a few words were exchanged between captains, it was time to start.
San Jose's captain - Tyler Toffoli, and the Blackhawks captain - Nick Foligno, took center ice for the face off.
After that moment you totally reached flow state.
It was like your body moved on its own.
You dodged around the opposing team, made great passes, gave perfect assists.
You sped down the ice, Bedard was right across from you with the puck.
So you did what you were good at.
You exploded into him, knocking him back off his feet and into the wall.
You swept the puck back to the only open teammate and sped down the ice.
Macklin passed the puck to you.
And you sent it right over the goalies left shoulder almost horizontally in a shot that might had looked impossible or accidental to anyone else.
The fans absolutely roared, A Little Bit Harder Now by SHE WANTS REVENGE blasted briefly over the speakers. It had become your song apparently.
You just got your first NHL goal in the first period of your first ever game.
After getting some cheers and pats from your teammates you circled back around, skating beside Connor Bedard for a second before moving away.
"Where you going?" He said, laughing a little.
You looked behind you, "Let's go," you joked, jerking your head.
"You want one?" He teased, smirking.
You smiled, knowing he was half-heartedly picking a fight
"Yeah, center ice," you said smiling as the two of you got into position.
After that the rest of the game went pretty smoothly.
You proceeded to score 2 more points the next few quarters.
You got a hat trick your first ever game.
You were totally on fire, beating even the best starts of the top players.
When it was finally over you all crowded back into the locker room.
You were sweating and riding the high of such a successful game, teammates clapped you on the back and hyped you up.
Eventually you all calmed down a little and you were able to take a shower.
You had made it back to your stall and put on your jeans, in the middle of a conversation about making plans for later tonight, when a reporter and cameraman came in.
You watched Smitty and Macklin giggle.
You took a breath as you realized the reports were looking for you.
You brushed the towel messily over the top of your hair to get some water off while the reporters set up and explained how the post game live interview was going to go.
You didn't even have time to prepare what you were going to say or put a shirt on, the water still damp against your skin before the words, "Rolling!" rang through the locker room.
The team stayed relatively quiet and undistracting while the reporter Macey White, began to talk.
"Good afternoon to everyone at home, I'm Macey White with ABC Sports News here talking to Y/N, the number one draft pick of the 2026 season who just scored 3 points - also known as a hat trick - in his first even NHL game with the San Jose Sharks. Y/n, can you walk us through the importance of tonight for you?"
You nodded a little bit, processing her words and sniffing before starting to talk, "Yeah I mean- I'm really pleased with how tonight went and uh- I think that it not only means a lot to, you know, show people who I am as a player and what I can do but it also is just, a great thing for our team you know uh- winning the first game of the season and just doing so sets a great tone for us as a team." You answered as professional as you could, not wanting to sound too cocky. Your eyes locked onto Maceys face as you tried to speak and choose your words carefully.
The eye contact and moment with must have unintentionally made her flustered because she stuttered all over the please with her next question, "That's- That's great uhm yes- definitely- it's clear that you and the sharks have been doing very well and have a great connection, so some fans have been wondering; how do you like California in comparison to Texas?"
You nodded along as she talked and bit back a smirk while you thought for a moment. You wanted to choose your words carefully. You had figured that you might get asked a question similar to this because your country background was pretty unique in the NHL.
"Well- I mean of course I love Texas, don't get me wrong. It has a lot of great culture and heart in it," you paused, thinking, "but you know I really like it Cali it just- the people are so much more..accepting I guess is the right word? Texas has a lot of uh- racism and just hate still and its just really nice to see the contrast in Cali." You replied, muscles flexing subconsciously as you tense and spoke.
Macey smiled, "that's great, you know we love to hear things like that" she smirked and picked up her phone.
You looked confused for a second before she showed you something on her screen
"Now we also love to hear about you as a person and just your lives in general, so what can you tell us about these photos that have just come out this week of you and Brittney Marney?" She asked
You were taken aback and let your eyes scan over the Instagram post she was showing you.

Recent sitings of the NHL's rising star, Y/N Y/L/N, and alleged girlfriend, Brittney Marney. The couples' relations have been sparking recent controversy due to Y/N being 17 years old with the 24-year-old partner.

You clenched your jaw, muscles jumped as you smirked, looking at the phone and then back up at the camera.
"Uh," you chuckled, "if I'm being honest I didn't know about these."
Macey cut in, "so can you confirm the relationship between you and Brittney as official?"
You shrugged slightly and tilted your head, still smiling, "I mean yeah" you laughed, "we've been dating for a few months now."
You ran your fingers through your hair.
You glanced to the side and saw Mack and Will giggling at you. You cringed a little bit, you knew they didn't like you and Brittney together, they thought she was too old for you.
"That's so sweet, amazing for the both of you, we also happened to notice another sweet moment that actually happened to take place on the ice tonight." Macey mentioned.
"We noticed you and Bedard laughing together after the first quarter, can you tell us about that and what words were exchanged?"
You nodded, "oh yeah, I mean we were just messing with each other, you know- picking fights. He seems like a really great guy, glad I got to play him and hope I see him around more" you smiled.
She nodded "Thank you again, and other congratulations on the win tonight," Macey said and turned, facing the camera head on.
"Again I'm Macey White with ABC Sports News and this has been the San Jose Sharks season opener with MVP of the night Y/n"
You smiled a little and rubbed at your shoulder, bicep flexing over your chest just as the camera cut off for the end of the interview.
You took a breath of relief as they started moving to clean up and move out.
You immediately sat down into your stall and put your baseballl cap on and turned to Mack and Will.
"Dudes, I just got put on blast all over the news," you joked.
"So much for a private relationship," Will said laughing.
"I think that reporters tongue fell out of her mouth," Macklin giggled, causing all of you to burst out laughing and try to stay quiet.
After getting ready the three of you started walking to your cars in the parking lot.
"So, like," Mack glanced at you guys, "we're going out to celebrate right?"
"Oh yeah to celebrate of course," Will laughed.
You all got to your cars and decided to meet and get food, not at a bar.
You got seated in a booth at the far end of the restaurant and made your orders.
You had been chatting about the game and making jokes while you waited for the drinks.
"yeah I mean that's what we train so hard for-" Mack said as the drinks got delivered to your table
You all got quiet for a little bit before he spoke up again.
"By the way uhm- about yesterday morning," he said looking at you.
You cut him off, shaking your head, "don't worry about it, I'm serious."
"We're serious too man, that was actually insane" Will spoke up.
"Yeah like- that was not okay at all" Mack added
You nodded, trying to shut it down, "I know I know but I'm serious it's okay, I'm moving out in a few months, and it doesn't happen often."
Fortunately, before they could answer a different waitress showed up and brought you guys your food, her eyes lingering on you and clearly recognizing you, though she didn't say anything and just gave a knowing smile.
You returned it and started eating, thankful for the distraction and not needing to talk about the obvious anymore.
You guys talked for a while, giggling increasing the more tired you got before you all decided to go home.
It was late when you got back and Micheal was asleep, so you walked straight to your room.
You couldn't wait to get away.
You laid down in your bed, exhausted, and opened Instagram to see that Brittney had posted something, you smiled a little to yourself and commented on it.
