   “ i know.  it seems silly to me too, but i know muggles are resourceful.  i doubt they’ve been lying about it, ” marlene mused, turning her attention back to the screen of the computer.  it took her a few seconds to figure out how to work the mouse, but she gave a pleased noise of triumph when she did.  “ alright, so that’s something. ”

“okay.” he watched in sheer /awe/ once he’d noticed a little something or other moving about the computer screen. wil needed to learn to keep his hands to himself since carefully, he tapped against one of the little boxes of the board, making the computer ‘ding’. “hey!” the elf laughed, “look at that, i made it talk!”

torunn eyed him, he was a bit too short to be an elf, maybe he wasn’t lying. “as long as you are not of the dark elves then there will not be a problem.”

“don’t worry about that. even if i were a dark elf, i’d be a sorry excuse for one.” he shrugged his shoulders, placing his long blonde hair behind one of his pointed ears, though they weren’t fully pointed. “where i’m from, the only dark ones we’re fighting happen to be demons.”

“oh sorry, i understand though. everyone loves to stare at my eyes. or remind me that they’re HUGE. i’m haley, by the way! you’re new, huh?”

“they’re big, great, now i’ve gotten that out of the way -- uh yeah, i’m new. nice, i’m wil.”

   marlene laughed a little, knocking her shoulder against his.  “ well, i know it’s a computer.  and i know it’s supposed to have like…a library of some sort on it.  where you can type in words with the letters and look things up. and i want to see if this library knows anything about hogwarts. ”

he reciprocated, knocking his shoulder back against hers, in that playful motion, even if he was in perpetual confusion ever since he got here, having someone who was understanding at least made it worthwhile. “a library on a computer?” wil chuckled, “come on, that’s nonsense, that thing is way too small.”

‘that’s good t’ know — i guess. but it’s less of me talking too much than it is embarrassing myself. they say the awkward teenage phase but it’s really the awkward young adult and above stage. clearly, it needs a better name.’

‘no matter what your age, it’s gonna be awkward,’ he said truthfully, ‘when i get embarrassed the tips of my ears turn red so, you don’t grow out of it.’

flinching ever so slightly as the newcomer made himself known, elphaba averted her eyes from her arms to examine the boy standing a few feet from her. she nodded at his words, a slight frown forming on her features as she tried to take in all the new information. her chest was filled by a mix of relief and fear at the knowledge that she wasn’t the only one who was completely lost. she took a deep breath before speaking out to the stranger, still prefering to keep some distance between them.

was she going to speak? wil felt like an idiot standing in the clothing he was sent here with, thanks to whoever was in charge of that. they weren’t /ragged/ persay, but nothing fancy. he may have looked a little unsightly to the female, maybe that was it. swallowing thickly, wil mustered up a reply. 

“wil ohmsford. i got here earlier today. wouldn’t you know, I got lost...who are you?”

marlene didn’t really expect him to get much out of it.  it was a hard thing to explain, and she shrugged her shoulders.  “ well, really i’m not from far from here.  i was born in a country called ireland.  but i went to a school called hogwarts for a long time before i moved to london. ”  she frowned, clicking at the computer again a few times.  “ people keep laughing when i tell them and saying like harry potter.  so i’m trying to see if there’s something on the internet that could explain why they all know about that but don’t believe me.  i must be boring you; i’m sorry. ”

his instinct and ability to read other’s expressions caused wil to feel a little horrible for being ignorant. it wasn’t his fault, though. he barely knew how to harness his magic to begin with, knowing of their side effects, he wasn’t one to jump on it. “it’s not boring...” wil finally took a seat next to the female, eyeing the screen. what in the world was that? he thought to himself, knowing they’d briefly talked about it, wil proving to be no help. “i think those letters must spell something out. but. could you tell me what exactly you’re searching on?” wil tried to prove himself comic relief for a moment, “because i’ve never seen that flashing thing before and it’s freaking me out.”

“So. Who are you, smiley guy?”

    “ oh, sorry.  i forget that not everyone knows what i’m talking about here.  okay, so muggle is the word for someone who doesn’t do magic.  someone born outside the magical world.  a pureblood is someone who’s grandparents are all witches and wizards.  a halfblood is someone who only has two grandparents who can do magic.  then there are muggleborn witches and wizards, who just have all normal grandparents but can do magic anyway.  and no need to be sorry.  it was mostly stuffy purebloods who had a problem with me anyway.  and who wants to be friends with them? ”

he kept himself busy, mentally, for the past few minutes /attempting/ to decipher what the hell she was talking about, yet, came up short in any sort of immediate response. after a few more moments of silence after she was done explaining, he carefully chose his next words, which, he barely did. “where are you from? all of this sounds like a completely different language.”

“ i meant the ears, but i get it.  i mean, it’s kind of the same where i come from.  people don’t like mixed breeds.  i’m a half blood witch, myself.  there were plenty of people who didn’t like that.  especially because my father was a pureblood.  they didn’t like that he married a muggle woman. ”

“that’s what i was referring to...anyway. you’re using some words that are making my head spin; what’s a ‘muggle’ exactly?” his eyebrows raised in wonder, “this whole, magic thing was never my scene, seeing as it died out years ago where i’m from. sorry that...you were shunned too. made fun of, the whole bundle.”

marlene cranes her neck to get a look at his ears.  “ that’s cute.  i’ve never met an elf of any sort. ”

“cute? how is that cute?” wil let out a breath, wiping his hand over his mouth for a moment to collect this thoughts. “where i’m from, it’s not all fun and games. being half makes your life worse.”
