Something I’ve been dying to know is whether the tomblrites (y’all) perceive Griddlehark as a butch-femme couple.

For years, it seemed a no-brainer to me that no, they aren’t, because Gideon’s the classic butch of the myriad and Harrow so clearly seems to be a gender non-conforming horrible little Ninth goblin with some extreme androgynous/gnc energy going on that didn’t speak femme to me — I mean, Dulcinea/Cytherea addressing her as “Lady or Lord of the Ninth” (GtN 75)? Even an ancient Lyctor isn’t sure what Harrow’s deal is?? And throughout the books Harrow continues to radiate evil stick energy (clearly androgynous). Maybe I was projecting. Maybe this is approaching the question of the gnc/nonbinary femme (a subject I’m no expert on).

Anyway, I’ve come across the Griddlehark butch-femme interpretation a few times and was absolutely befuddled, so this is my attempt at reaching some greater understanding on the matter — I welcome the discussion and additional thoughts/interpretations.

Is Griddlehark:

Butch-femme all the way

Butch-femme (interpretation of Harrow as androgynous/gnc femme-adjacent)

Butch4butch (never seen this one but interested if anybody thinks so)

Neither (interpretation of Harrow as androgynous/gnc evil stick gender goblin)

Never realized that the first thing Gideon does when she’s in Harrows body, the first thing she does as a character since her death, is un-impale herself. Harrow had been skewered through by Mercy just like Gideon was by the fence. Tamsyn fucking Muir.
