Eliza’s eyes widened. “You stole your brother’s car?” She was, ironically, questioning their actions while settling into the worn leather cushions of the seat. Tucking her hands beneath her, she watched the way that Charlie gripped the wheel, urging the engine to roar to life with the gentleness of a parent teaching their child to ride a bike.
Looking out the window, to the home she’s grown up in, Eliza asked, “Where, exactly, is it that we need to go? You haven’t thought of a place and not told me, right?”
“Technically, it’s both of ours since I helped him buy it,” Charlie said, clapping their hands as the car roared to life in the otherwise quiet night. “But….yeah, I stole it.”
“Oh, what a rebel,” Eliza teased, and Charlie shrugged, but knew that this was a compliment.
“Anyhow, we’re driving to New York City and at this point-” Charlie buckled themselves in and began to drive down the road, “You can’t turn back. Now lock your door, unless you wanna go flying out down the highway.”
Eliza knew that Charlie meant that last part seriously and that’s why she was glad she’d just scored her license before this impromptu trip. As much fun as it sounded to be shit whipped by the air in a car flying down the highway, that wasn’t something Eliza was entirely comfortable letting happen. She settled into the seat, buckling the belt in place before letting out a large huff of air. She looked over at Charlie, at the way their dark skin absorbed the light around them, leaving them twinkling in twilight, she looked at the way their lips curved into a smile, the way they looked at her like she was the world. She wouldn’t want to be anywhere but with them. “Let me pull up a map, I’m sure you can just head towards the highway though.” Her heart fluttered in her chest as the engine roared to life and she selected a playlist, letting the music fill the car where her words couldn’t.

“Well duh,” Charlie popped open the trunk to the car and placed their bags inside, “We’re running away from home, am I supposed to be like, totally stoked?” Charlie said sarcastically, slamming the trunk harder than intended. They see Eliza jump at the action and take a deep breath.
“Sorry,” they breathe out, “I’ll admit, this is fucking terrifying. But I need to do this.” They turned to Eliza and grabbed her hand. “And I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else but you.”
Eliza’s face fell momentarily -- was it wrong of her to feel a little stoked? She was excited, the prospect of moving far away and living her life as she saw fit was... well, exciting! Her chest tightened with Charlie’s harsh movements and she let a shaky breath exit her nose. She was chewing on the inside of her cheek, trying not to retreat into herself and make this whole thing fall apart when they grabbed her hand.
Looking into their eyes, she saw a trace of desperation and she’s back in her body; she’s back in the present. Take it one step at a time, girl.
Straightening her back, she lightly kicked the tire of the car in front of them. It was hard to make out in the dim light coming from the yellowing streetlamp standing a few feet away. But even then, she could see the way in which the paint chipped and flecked away from itself. It was less than sexy, to say the least.
She grinned at them, resting against the frame. “So where’d you get this piece of metal? I doubt you bought it but I don’t entirely believe you stole it either.”

The letter in Eliza’s hands felt like a weight. The paper, thin enough that she could see her hands through it, was the last thing (at least for a while) that she would say to her parents. Thank god.
She had written and rewritten it and she still didn’t think it was good enough. A projection. She knew that if push came to shove, she could always come back home but she didn’t want to have to; she didn’t want to prove her parents right, that she was nothing without them. That she never would be.
Pushing the toe of her boot against the duffel bag she’d stuffed to the max, she watched the window, looking for any sign that Charlie had made it. A bundle of nerves swirled in the pit of her stomach, burrowing its way through the soft flesh of her belly and out into the world -- some real Alien-type shit. The longer she sat there, the more anxious she got.
It wasn’t too late to turn back, right? To tell Charlie that she couldn’t do it, she never could do it, her parents were right, her parents were right, her parents were--
The quick knock on her window was all she needed to push her from the bed in a flurry of motion. She flung the glass open and looked at Charlie, at the way their skin shimmered in the light flowing from her room behind her.
It was exactly 11:30 PM.
“Hey, it’s the first time you aren’t late.” It was half insult half praise, a tenderness in the words saved just for them.
“This is important,” was their reply, a reassurance hidden in three words. She appreciated it. They threw their chin in the direction of Eliza’s duffel bag and the sleeping bag resting atop it and said, “C’mon, we’re on a schedule.”
“This is the most serious I’ve seen you in a minute,” she murmured as she rushed between them, handing them her bag. They slung it over their shoulder, grunting at the weight of it. Eliza took one last sweeping look at her room, wondering if it’d still be there when-- if-- she came back.
Charlie was already descending the fire escape, their sneakers quietly thudding against the warbled metal as Eliza tossed the letter onto the bed, swinging her leg over the window ledge and following Charlie into the night.
