With similar logic applied to different textures, identical silhouettes emerged in sumptuous layers of gold and embroidery on one side, and in various weaves of humble burlap on the other. For the finale, twin coats woven from different qualities of jute or gold-toned fabrics were fitted across the shoulders with three-dimensional lettering spelling out “Restraint” on one look and “Decadence” on the other. One was rendered in a material that speaks to labor, discipline, and invisible structures, the other in pure, fabulous ornamentation. Couture, the duo noted, is built on both. But beneath the adornment is one shared, human reality. Here, the designers seemed to ask not only the question “What do you see when you look in the mirror?” but also, ultimately, “What is really precious?”
