Carol and Jean hadn't been at a party together in years, so obviously at the first one they attend, Carol found herself sitting in a lounge room with her best friend and a bottle of Asgardian mead.
"This has got to be the most fun I've had in.. god, when was the last time I was on Earth?"
angel on fire
Carol had been gone for a while. Joining the Starjammers meant leaving the Earth, and time was different out there. She’d seen so much, and yet, all she had wanted the whole time was a night back at home, in her tiny apartment, with Chewie. It wasn’t a big wish, but when your everyday is saving the universe, sometimes the small stuff is what seems truly extraordinary.
She’d been contacted, asked to come home. After everything that had happened with Ultron, they - the government, S.H.I.E.L.D., whoever They was this week - wanted her on standby. ‘If anything happens, we need someone we can trust,’ she’d heard.
Trust. Ha! Control, more like.
But, Carol had always served her country, even when they’d left her out in the cold. If they were asking for her back, the Earth needed her, and she couldn’t say no to that. Plus, she could really go for a coffee. The food out here just wasn’t the same.
By the time she had taken her first sip of coffee - real coffee - Carol had already learned enough about what Earth had been going through to realize that the ballgame had completely changed since the last time she’d been here. The fact that it was only the Avengers still operational made things even worse - these big league problems needed big league hitters, no matter if they were mutants or not. At least that solution was in the pipeline. Hopefully that would be enough...
Lost in thought, Carol only came out of her own mind when she realized someone was speaking to her - and had been trying to get her attention for some time.
“Oh, uh.. Can I help you?”
In his down-time, Steve liked to take some time and go to the boardwalk. Sometimes, he’d walk around aimlessly and just enjoy the positive crowds. Others, like today, he liked to get himself a corner and do free drawings. It helped him improve on his human figures and kept his hands from itching. Of course, people recognized him, that was unavoidable. Being Captain America and Steve Rogers these days… tended to blend into being the same person, where as back during the war, he was able to separate the two.
Perhaps, he might have minded once, but there was something about a couple of kids with their Avengers shirts on screaming in joy and asking for pictures that made his heart fill with warmth a bit. After another round of pictures with a no older than six-year-old set of twin boys, Steve turned back to his seat and sketch-pad, pausing at the shadow covering his spot. He dropped into his seat and placed the pad in his lap.
“Would you like a drawing?” he asked as he straightened his pencils out, only after that, looking up to see who he was talking to.
Carol had only been back on Earth for a few days, and she was still trying to find her bearings. The GPS on her phone helped navigating New York, so she wasn’t lost, per say, but she certainly wasn’t sure where she was in relation to.. well, anything. The beach had always been one of her favorite places. The vastness of the sea reminded her of the sky - it looked like it could just go on forever. Walking the boardwalk was relaxing, despite the number of people around. She loved the smell of the food, the flashing lights on the rides, and the feeling of the mist from the sea in the air.
Waiting at a shop counter for a slice of pizza, Carol could hear some excited commotion up ahead - something about a Captain? Taking a bite of her pizza, she turned, confused, and saw none other than Steve Rogers, smiling as he sat for a photo with two kids. “Cute,” she mused, laughing softly to herself. She handed the employee her credit card again, taking another slice of pizza and beginning to close the distance between them.
“Love one. Figure the artist might appreciate a snack, though.” Carol smirked as she held out the paper plate to Steve. “How’ve you been, Rogers?”
