“Talk about timing.” I grinned when Dani gave us the wooden dowels. I was in the process of trying to make something for Cypress, this just made things a helluva lot easier. Once the leather strands we wound up tightly I used a bit of my bandage tape to attach them to the end of one dowel, “May not be the type of whip you’re used to but it’s the next best thing.” I said giving him the cat o’ nine tails, well it was more like six tails. A little crude looking, but it should do the job.
“You can always have more.” I said to Dani as I pulled over the collection of needles from the tea store, setting aside six thicker ones for myself and embedding the rest along one side of the second wooden dowel, “See? I’m good for something. I can cut it down a bit if you want.” I offered, giving her the “spiked” dowel.
Pulling my dagger out from my waistline I went to work with the two remaining dowels, shaping them and cutting a notch in the back of one side for the bow string to sit in. Once I was satisfied with the shape I worked the butts of the needles into the end of the dowels in a tepee formation to act as arrowheads, “I can take first watch if you guys want to get some sleep.” I said, cut off by the thundering of a cannon, the second we’ve heard today.
Accepting the cat tails from Nax I gave it a few swings to get used to my new weapon. The leather wasn’t as thick as I was used to and having more than one tail threw off the weight of it. What it lacked in precision it made up for in spread and brute power. This wasn’t a killing weapon but a maiming one.
Nax offered to take the first watch but honestly I wasn’t sure I could get much sleep. Two more cannons fired and if my count was correct that meant ten of us left. My eyes flicked to Nax who was standing guard above Dani and I. This alliance had been useful but all of us had to know it couldn’t last too much longer. He knew as much as I liked him, my first and only allegiance was to Dani and if I had to kill him so be it.
The first day’s fallen had been a mess, mostly a montage of the bloodbath from different angles as tributes got slaughtered. Today’s was different. The boy from One who’d barely survived Meredith’s rage completely destroyed poor Blake. Next, the silent boy who’d scored a twelve barely escaped a run in with the thief girl who’s face was plastered everywhere. But perhaps most surprising was Wednesday taking down both Joan and Cyprus. She looked almost as beat up as Salem did when all was said and done.
One thing was clear from these fights. No one was getting away with an easy kill anymore.

We paid and paused in the vestibule of the grocery store, “Hang on a sec.” I said, kneeling down to work with what I just brought, “I know how this is going to sound, but I need your help.” I said to Cypress as I ripped open the box of condoms, “Just…hold them open.” I said giving him the three rubbers as I opened the bottle of peroxide.
We couldn’t keep a straight face while I poured a decent amount in each condom, tying off the ends as if they were water balloons and placing them safely in the ornate box, “Trust me, they’ll come in handy.” I said capping the bottle. I still had a decent amount left, and made sure to keep a few extra matches in my pocket, “Where to?” I asked, placing the box back in my bag.
Having spent the majority of the time in the grocer wandering the aisles and finding absolutely nothing that interested me, I joined Dani and Nax over by the tills seeing if they’d come up with anything better. Apparently they’d already paid and before I knew it Nax was handing me condoms of all things. “I uhh... Fine, whatever.” I said knowing better than to question this.
Once all the condoms were tied off I gratefully relinquished them back to Nax. The less time I spent holding condoms that Nax and Dani had the better. I mean who was I to judge what they wanted to do but I’d just prefer not to know about it.
Stifling a quick yawn, I realized that without much natural light in the mall it was hard to tell what time it was. Eyeing a large clock on the wall outside the store it looked like it was getting later. “I dunno how much longer we have until those cleaners come out again. Do we want to risk getting stuck outside with them?” Rustling up the persimmon, I took a bite. “Might be best to just wait it out here and then head out tomorrow. Doesn’t look like we’re in immediate danger.”
(Don’t) Hold Me Closer, Tiny Dancer; Tricycle
In his pocket is a tape measure, some safety pins and six buffalo nickels. Inside the store you’ll find a variety of hat making materials.
After the battle with the tap dancing wonder, the three of us decided to lick our wounds and weigh out options. Dani kept a firm grip on the cane and it was clear she was hanging on to that which was fine by me, it suited her better anyways. As the adrenaline of our fight began to wear off I noticed just how hot it was getting in here. Stripping off my jacket and stowing it in my bag, I downed the rest of my bottle of nestea and the other half of my sandwich leaving only one of each left.
The three of us decided to split up and sack the store for whatever we could find that would be useful. Snatching up a large pair of shears, I put a jar filled with different coloured beads in my bag and returned to see Dani with a couple feet of silk and Nax with some leather and some sewing needles. Tallying up the total cost we left 9 buffalo nickels on the counter.
From outside the window we could make out another tribute across the courtyard but from this distance it was hard to tell who it was. Getting a little closer the three of us whispered her name at the same time. “Alice.” Judging from how she had decapitated Saphir yesterday it was safe to say she wasn’t the same girl I’d met in the training centre. “Should we wait her out, see where she decides to go?” I asked.
Arena Day 1
Location: Tea Party
Allies: Tricycle
Items: Pack (minus half a sandwich and a bandage)
Injuries: Scratches along chest (disinfected), gashes through cheek (disinfected and bandaged)
Events: Survived the bb and got a pack but lost the paper and coins to Joan and Cyprus. Dani, Nax, and I holed up in a perfume store but were attacked by some zombie mutt which we took care of with minimal injuries. Then we got hella faded :)
Black Friday || Arena Day 1 || Cy-Jamos
“Mira! Ya know, short stuff! From Eleven, with freckles. We played in the snow together.” I explained. “Why isn’t she here?” I echoed his question, packing the contents of ghost-Horne’s gift to me back into its neat little box, and before I could get up, “Dani! I think it’s my birthday and a ghost gave me-hey, wait!” she grabbed me by the arm and started pulling me away from the party, “Don’t be a party pooper.” I grumbled as she set me down by the doorway.
I pouted at her and took a deep breath, the cool scent of fresh air filling my nose and the cloud beginning to lift from my head, ”Shit.” I mumbled rubbing my eyes, “On a scale of 1-10 how much of an ass did we just make out of ourselves?” I asked Dani as she plopped Cypress down by me.
The door to the cafe was open, airing out its fumes and allowing us to come down from our highs, “Thanks.” I said to Dani, “And, uh, sorry for being so open back there.” I said to Cypress as I dug out half of the ham sandwich and ate at it slowly while I began to work with the materials I was given, “So what’s our next move?” I asked as I found the natural curve and gently began cutting grooves for the bowstring to sit in.
“Ohhhhh.” I nodded my head as he described her. I’m sure I’d seen the little cutie around the training centre though I’d never got the chance to meet her. For the first time I realized Nax had received some sort of gift, and judging by the looks of it, it was a stick and some string. What the hell was he gonna do with a stick and string?
Little by little the haze that permeated my mind seemed to dissipate as I breathed in the mall air. It took me a minute to realize I was still wearing the stupid top hat before I knocked the thing off my head. “Sorry about... whatever that was.” I frowned at Dani. I can only imagine what the two of us had looked like, high as kites sitting in the cafe.
I glanced at Nax trying to convey that it was fine but we didn’t have to discuss it further before looking back out at the mall corridor. Realizing just how hungry I was as Nax pulled out his sandwich, I followed suit and munched on half of my own, drinking a little nestea to wash it down. As we sat one by one metal grates started to descend upon the stores locking people in, or out. Following suit one slammed shut just inches away from where Nax and I were sitting. “I guess that settles what we’re doing for the rest of tonight.”
Black Friday || Arena Day 1 || Cy-Jamos
“Mira said she wanted to have a pajama party with us all! She should have told everyone to come here.” Where is Mira? She’s so cute and fun-sized, but not like Dani. I couldn’t help but giggle when Cypress told me to keep Dani and I’s intentions private, “Sorry. She’s just the best ever.” I said leaning my elbows onto the table.
My daydream was broken when a box fell in front of me, “Ooo, what’s this?” I said softly opening it. It was so nice looking and inside, “What the-” I pulled out a stick. It looked sturdy-ish, not as good as the ones I made bows out of back home. There was some hemp rope too, I can use this! “Cypress, look!” I said to the hatter from Eight, “I can make something out of thi-is it my birthday?” I asked, immediately looking to the cake behind us and the silly hats, “Is that why I got this?”
I looked inside to see if there was a card and found a note, “Shrimp to my barby?” I mumbled…That’s like something Horne would say! But Horne’s dead. I saw him before we came in here. And I tripped him earlier. That wasn’t very nice of me. Maybe he’s a ghost and looking out for me? That made me smile, a sad sort of smile, but I felt happy knowing someone’s looking out for me, “Thanks buddy.” I thought to myself as ran my fingers over the note before pocketing it.
“Who’s Mira?” I yawned. The cakes kept singing the same song over and over again and I was getting a little tired just watching it. Eyes glancing around I saw the sign that said a purse had been found and decided to go look for it. “Yeah, she is pretty great.” I said of my sister. “Why isn’t she in here with us? Dani, Dani get in here.”
There was a small drawer labelled lost and found under the tills and opening it I found the purse. I wondered if there was anything else useful for us back here but most of it was just fancy machines that I had no idea how to use. Feeling rather content with the purse I wandered back in front of the counter just in time to see Dani storming in and hauling Nax away from where he had been sitting.
“Cypress, get your butt out of there.” She called at me after depositing Nax near the doorway. I waved at her and smiled, turning to check out how I looked in the hat using my reflection in the mirror. Seconds later I felt something grabbing my ear and tugging me forcefully towards the door. “You idiots, you’ve been drugged.” Dani steamed as she dumped me on the floor near the door with Nax. From here we could breath some fresh air and I could feel my head beginning to clear.
Black Friday || Arena Day 1 || Cy-Jamos
Dani stood guard outside as Cypress and I went in. It was soothing inside: warm, peaceful, it’s like everything on my mind just melted away. The colors were intoxicating, it was like being high. But I wasn’t, this was perfect. Natural. I suppressed a laugh as I moved forward to examine what was in here.
I went up to the counter, my eyes wandering the array of colorful products in the case. But I wasn’t hungry. They just looked nice; how they were decorated, the colors. My eyes stopped when they landed on a “take a penny, leave a penny” tray, “I don’t have anything to leave.” I said softly, as if I was talking to someone behind the counter. I bit my lip in a pout, knowing that we needed the money. We’re in a mall afterall. What if there were supplies, or books, or, “Oh! I have something I can leave.” I grinned opening my bag and digging out the container of strawberries from my bag, “This is just as valuable as money here.” I said, leaving the fruit and scooping up the coins.
My eyes lingered on the cakes at the counter. Cakes reminded me of pancakes, which reminded me of, “Cy? Did Dani tell you about when she made pancakes for us?” I giggled, “They were sweet, but not as sweet as her, or gorgeous.” I kept my smile on watching Cypress in that silly hat, “Did she tell you how we made out last night? She asked me to stay with her last night. I should have” I said slouching into a chair, replaying that happy memory in my head. I wish she was here with us.
It just felt so right, having the hat on my head. “I never want to take it off.” I whispered, giggling to myself. “I never want to take it off!” Whatever the game makers had done to the cafe, it was working. Taking another deep breathe of the incense laden air a grin stretched across my face. “Dani, you have to get in here, it’s amazing.” I called to my sister.
Behind the glass case was an array of dancing and singing cakes. I felt a little tug at my stomach but how could I eat them? They were so dang cute I couldn’t even stand the thought of eating my little cake friends. I just wanted to see them dance and sing, and dance. How could anything go wrong in here? “I think all the tributes need to get in here and just put on a hat. Why aren’t you wearing a hat Nax?” I asked gazing at the boy.
His eyes were peeled to the cakes just as mine were. Then he started on about him and Dani... “Nax Nax Nax stop. That’s great you like my sister or she likes you or whatever. But, I don’t need to hear about it you know? I don’t wanna hear about whatever you two choose to do with your last moments.”
Black Friday || Arena Day 1 || Cy-Jamos
You enter “Tea Party” and this place is quirky as all hell. The heavy scent of incense hits your nostrils as you enter and the multicoloured smoke swirls around you. There are several hat stands in different shapes and sizes. You can see several cakes behind the glass counter in all kinds of shapes and colours. There’s a take a penny leave a penny tray at the register with 10 Buffalo Nickels in it and a small sign that tells of a found purse.
You’re taking in your surroundings and involuntarily inhaling the smoke around you and you can feel yourself becoming giddy and excitable. The hats that stand sentinel around you seem to be calling out for you to wear them and the cakes have taken up invisible sentience that only you can see. Para out your experiences as you’re intoxicated and the hats want you to wear them and the cakes are literally begging to be eaten. If you try on a hat tell us what kind of hat it is. Bold if you want/need a reblog.
The instant I step foot into Tea Party I could feel myself relaxing. The games seemed to become a distant memory as I lead the alliance inside and away from the stress of killing and death. Dani hung back outside to stand guard incase anything should happen while Nax and I decided to explore the wonderfully weird cafe. Honestly, it was as if the place had come straight out of Meredith’s mind. Everything seemed whimsical and alive; I could practically feel a grin growing on my face just by looking at everything.
Nax wandered over to the counter where a take a penny leave a penny jar sat and decided to scoop out all the coins inside. After all those were for people who needed them, and we definitely needed them. There was also something posted about a found purse but that didn’t seem pressing for now. What really needed my attention were these hats on display. So many different styles and colours, all so inviting.
The top of my head suddenly felt very, very naked. Almost like it needed one of the hats to be on it. With really no choice my body compulsively flipped through the racks of hats until I settled on a top hat just like Mueller used to wear. “Ladies and gentle, it’s showtime.” I whispered to myself, slipping the hat on.
Black Friday || Arena Day 1 || Cy-Jamos
I didn’t have to think twice before acting. Getting to my feet, I tore off my jacket and dug for a match, using the fabric to safe guard my fingers and grabbed the can of hairspray, “If you want to hit bottom, Don’t bother to try taking me with you~” I began singing softly, “ I won’t answer if you call, Two heartbeats ended in hell.” the beast turned to look at me. I could imagine Dani and Cypress’s expressions, but I was locked on von Teese.
“Trying to break your fall-” I continued as she charged at me, “Thought you would help with this last part.” I grinned as I struck the match and held it up to the hairspray can, “ Into the fire, Fire, ohh, Into the fire~” I pushed down on the nozzle and sprayed a jet of fire into her face, causing her to stumble and giving Cypress the opportunity to move in for the kill.
As soon as Nax dug for his matches I knew what he had in mind. One of the contortionists had accidentally set her tent on fire once by spraying hairspray into a candle. Though I had no idea what the boy was singing, I ignored him and moved away from the back of the zombie as I didn’t want to get sprayed with the burst of flames.
Even back a few yards I could feel the intense heat as they singed at the dead skin and made a gross sizzling sound. Almost gagging at the close up scent of burning rotted flesh, I stepped forwards and tore my knife through her throat, finally putting an end to our not-so-nice model. The three of us stood poised and ready to attack incase she came back up but it seemed she was finally down for the count.
Allowing myself a moment to relax, I slumped down against one of the displays and dug into my bag looking for the med kit I’d seen earlier. It was pretty basic, just a couple bandaids, some cream and some wipes. Thanks to the track suit the cuts on my chest weren’t bad and just needed to be wiped down. The ones on my cheek felt a little worse and required some of the cream and a bandaid.
“What now?” I asked the other two. For now the store seemed quiet and the stench of the perfume was helping mask the smell from miss von Tesse’s burnt remains.
Black Friday || Arena Day 1 || Cy-Jamos
I knew I only had a brief moment to my advantage with her back towards me. Seeing how quick she moved I knew we would have to start low and work our way up. As she moved backwards from Cypress’s kick I dipped down to my knees and drove my dagger into her Achilles tendon on her left leg, causing her to shriek once again and turn in my direction.
I pushed off from the ground and she threw herself on me, her clammy hands around my throat choking the air out of me. My dagger hand was stuck between her body and mine. I had to use my head, literally, and connected my forehead with hers, causing her to loosen her grip and abandon me when Cypress made his next attack. I gasped for air, feeling cuts along my neck where her nails dug in, but knew I couldn’t stay down for long. I was just getting to my feet when something clanked near me. A bottle of hairspray. I looked up and saw Dani behind a supply counter, nodding towards the beast.
Disoriented and slowed, I took my opportunity to strike at the weakened model. Aiming for the head I thrust my knife forwards only to have it blocked by her claws. She lurched forwards with her mouth open and I could only imagine how much I didn’t want to have her take a bite out of me. Dodging to the left I took a swipe at her side but was momentarily distracted by Dani throwing something to Nax.
It only took my eyes being off her a moment before she attacked, nails shredding my suit and leaving gashes across my chest. “Nax.” I said as loudly as I dared to in a mall filled with things trying to kill us. “Whatever you’re planning make it fast.” I ducked under a swipe at my head and kicked at the model’s legs. Here’s to hoping he had an idea for putting this thing down.
