āI feel humility, in my heart of hearts, only in the presence of the poorest lives and the greatest adventures of the mind. Between the two is a society I find ludicrous.ā

āBeat doesnāt mean tired or bushed, so much as it means beato, the Italian for beatific; to be in a state of beatitude, like St. Francis, trying to love all life, trying to be utterly sincere with everyone, practicing endurance, kindness, cultivating joy of the heart. How can this be done in our mad modern world of multiplicities and millions? By practicing a little solitude, going off by yourself once in a while to store up that most precious of goals: the vibrations of sincerity.ā āJack KerouacĀ

A dominant impulse on encountering beauty is to wish to hold on to it, to possess it and give it weight in oneās life. There is an urge to say, āI was here, I saw this and it mattered to me.ā

The winter rain is here tonight, thank God. The weather in Cape Town is horribly upside down because of El Nino effect AND climate change. Record temperatures. Records broken in the worst possible sense. Worst (national) drought in a century. It leaves me horribly unsettled about now and the immediate future. The long-term future is a foregone fuck up; too late. Perhaps selfishly I'm grateful I don't and won't have children... I could not 'gift' them this.
At the end of the day and just before the night, at a month and a half into a southern hemisphere winter, one must stop reading. And begin writing. Or else my life is without meaning.
Often, unexpectedly, I bump into The Mountain where I least expect it. Then I'm grateful and give thanks for the adventure of my life here in this city, Cape Town.
Rushed to Sea Point to watch the sun set on my birthday and made it by half a sun; I took this as I ran across Beach Road and onto the endless grass that fringes the promenade. The air was pungent with the aweosome reek of the Atlantic. And seaweed. The moon is waxing. And life is beautiful. Always. #capetown #seapoint #promenade
A quite Monday night listening to music and musing beneath the fairy lights while setting up my tumblr account #courseinmiracles
