🚲 Arlington Edition of Data Protected Bike Lanes will be October 16th 🚲

Attention Arlington (and Arlington adjacent) HMD Beta Testers! The Data Protected Bike Lanes Project is crossing the Potomac to capture bike lane blockers in Arlington on Wednesday October 16th! Yes, this is the same date as #DataPBL in Pittsburgh -- double the #DataPBL!! We'll be monitoring bike lanes in Rosslyn, Crystal City (National Landing?), Clarendon, Ballston and Courthouse during AM/PM Rush and lunch time to try and understand the size and scope of bike lane blockages in Arlington on a typical weekday. We need at least 50 volunteers to make this a successful event, so please sign up now and invite your friends!

Hello Beta Testers, After 9 months of beta testing that has produced over 14,000 app submissions, we thought that now would be a good time to give you a broader look at what we’ve been up to beyond app updates and calls for collective action. Winners: US Ignite/AWS Smart Cities Pitch Showcase!!

Big News! The How's My Driving app won the US Ignite/AWS Smart Cities Showcase. The showcase was the culmination of the 8-week US Ignite Startup Accelerator Program. Eight of the 19 participating companies were selected to pitch at the showcase in DC yesterday. How's My Driving came out on top and was awarded $50,000 in AWS credits. Below is a photo of Mark (CEO), Artem (Developer) and Daniel (CTO) right after the big win!

Short Term Updates

In addition to refining the DFHV complaint system integration, we have two major updates we're working over the enxt month or so:

Launching the apps in app stores iPhone and Android. We'll be packaging up the current web app, so that it can be launched in the Apple app store and Google Play store. This will allow iPhone users to pass photo location and timestamp like Android users can currently. iPhone users will also be able to receive push notifications for DFHV complaint investigations. The web app will continue to be available on all platforms.

Automatic License Plate Recognition. We are working on a solution that will allow for both license plate state and number reading automatically. This solution is not perfect, especially for Maryland plates with stacked letters, so you will continue to be able to edit the plate number. We will also be displaying the license plate from each photo, cropped and zoomed in for easier reading.

Mid-Term Updates

We have a few more updates that will be happening closer to the end of the year.

We're re-branding the app to OurStreets. We've come a long way from the @HowsMyDrivingDC twitter bot and the name "How's My Driving" no longer represents what we are trying to accomplish with the app. Our goal is to amplify our collective voices to make our streets safer, not simply shame dangerous drivers.

The app is getting a complete overhaul. Right now the app is simple form that is relatively quick and easy to use, but there is a lot of room for improvement. In conjunction with the re-branding effort, we'll be completely redesigning the user experience. We plan to make the app more intuitive and faster, allow for a wider range of submissions, and more granular information!

H/I Street Bus Lanes are Now Permanent

The Data Informed Bus Lane Blitz was a huge success with 30+ volunteers recording nearly 300 bus lane violations in one day! Announced last Friday, DDOT will be making the pilot bus lanes permanent in early November, expanding the effective hours from 7am -7pm. In the Washington Post article, the Blitz was cited as influencing this decision. The exact hours Mark suggested in his Greater Greater Washington post about the Blitz are the exact hours adopted for the permanent lanes. The power of our collective action is real!!

DC Update

In addition to our new direct integration with the DFHV complaint system, we'd been in conversations with DFHV, DDOT and DPW about wider adoption of the app to help optimize enforcement and build infrastructure projects. If all goes as planned, the app will be a central hub for all dangerous driving behavior in DC that then integrates seamlessly with multiple departments within DC government in various ways. Keep the app submissions coming, so we can continue push for safer streets in the District.

Tweeting @DC311 is back...for now

DC beta testers,

Apologies for the multiple messages in one week, but it turns out the DC 311 Twitter handle closed its direct messages recently. We didn't realize this because the entire HMD team had active direct message threads with DC311 (sorry, not sorry). As a result, we've reinstating "Click to Tweet" for all violations not associated with taxis or ride-hailing vehicles. We're also tagging DC 311 at the top of tweets in order to direct the requests primarily to the intended recipient (ie DC311). The direct integration with the DC Dept of For-Hire Vehicles launched earlier this week is still very much active. This is an exciting first step told the app being fully integrated with DC enforcement and transportation stakeholders!

Our First Direct Government Integration!

Attention DC beta testers!

We’re proud to announce the How’s My Driving App’s first direct government integration - the DC Dept of For-Hire Vehicles complaint system (ie no more tweeting to DFHV)!

DFHV Integration

The DFHV complaint system is a vital check on dangerous behavior on both taxis and ride-hailing vehicles in DC. Thank you to Director David Do and CIO Eric Fidler for being willing to work with us on this integration. Here’s how it works: When you submit taxis or ride-hail vehicles in DC, you’ll now automatically get a DFHV complaint case number. Soon after you will receive a notification from the app alerting you of an acknowledgement message from DFHV that will populate in the results page. You will need to allow for notification permissions when prompted to receive them. As your submission goes through the DFHV complaint process, you will receive in-app updates in a similar manner. Notification Policy: Our policy is to alert you of any kind of new notification types before implementing them, so you have the opportunity to opt-out.

#BusLaneBlitz was a Huge Success 🙌

Thanks to the 30+ volunteers for making the Data Informed Bus Lane Blitz such a successful event. Together we collected nearly 300 bus lane violations and received great media coverage! Plus, what's next for the bus lane blitz?

Final Tally

When all was said and done, we collected 289 bus lane violations, which is pretty incredible on a light traffic day in August. What's more, there were 475 total submissions in the app yesterday -- far more than an average August day!

Join our Data Informed Bus Lane Blitz on Wednesday, 8/21 🚌

Hello Fellow HMD Beta Testers! My name is Rebecca Watson, and I grew up in a small town in Rhode Island where people would drive their cars half a mile to the supermarket. I had limited interaction with public transportation, until I moved to DC in 2014. I excitedly became a regular public transit rider--I quickly became convinced that I would save years on my life by forgoing the stress of owning a car and relying on what the city could already provide. But whatever years I may have gained from lower stress, I’ve probably lost again as buses fight for space on our congested streets. So I was genuinely thrilled to see the H and I Street dedicated bus lanes pilot in June. Police were there to issue citations, tow trucks were out in full force, and buses were able to move quickly down streets. Unfortunately, as the novelty wears off, the bus lanes have become more congested with vehicles that are not moving buses, bicycles, or taxis. To that end, the How’s My Driving app has afforded us the opportunity to take a snapshot of the violations that occur on a typical day--an event we’ve coined the Data Informed Bus Lane Blitz (#buslaneblitz). Our goal is to go out and record every vehicle improperly using the H/I St bus lanes. I hope you’ll join me on Wednesday morning and afternoon, August 21, helping our city craft the best in public transit system that it can have.

A new process for citation lookups means faster reporting 💨 for you!

Hello HMD beta testers! If you’ve used the app in DC, you’ve probably noticed the wheel that spins for several seconds before you’re taken to the results page. This delay is due solely to the citation lookup process: right now, we have to go through the front-end of the slow DC DMV website, beat a captcha, and parse the citation data in order to present it to you. We’ve separated the citation lookup process, so that you can report for enforcement instantly without needing to wait for this process to complete. (Of course, you’re welcome to wait if you’d like to include the citation information in your 311 report!) How it looks in the app: Plus, we’ve spruced up the results page, both aesthetically and functionally. There is a new button that allows you to refresh the citation lookup for any report in your history, so you can check and see if a citation was issued based on previous app submissions— without relying on 311!

New feature uses photo data for safer, more confident submissions 📷

Hello HMD beta testers!

Sometimes it’s not safe to drop everything to record a violation in the moment. So we’ve updated the app to prioritize photo metadata for location, timestamp, and photo orientation--now, you can snap violation photos and wait to submit until it's safe and/or convenient (especially in this heat!).

Even with this new feature, we do ask that you submit as soon as possible--especially if you want to link to enforcement.

How Does it Work?

If you’ve enable location permissions in your camera app, the photo location will replace the GPS location in the location field when you upload a photo to your submission. Even if you don’t enable location permissions, photo data like timestamp and photo orientation is now being used in reporting and for intuitive photo display.

⚠️ Major iPhone Disclaimer ⚠️

Since the beta version of the app is not a native iOS app, this new feature does not currently work on iPhones, except for automatic photo rotation. We do have plans to build a native app once we’ve deemed the app is ready to move out of beta, but there is a workaround - you can sync your photos to a Mac and submit to the app via web browser.

Introducing Vehicle Type Buttons 🚗 🚕 🚚

Hello HMD beta testers!

We’ve revamped the taxi/rideshare toggle into full blown (required) vehicle type buttons! Plus, check out some reminders for general app use.

Through the first 5 months of the beta test, approximately 10-15% of vehicles submitted to the app were taxis or rideshare vehicles. After gathering some user experience feedback, we decided to revamp the taxi/rideshare toggle into more distinct buttons.

With this redesign, we estimate that the 10-15% rideshare/taxi vehicle share of submissions will rise to somewhere around 30%. This means more DFHV complaints being submitted and more drivers being held accountable.

Button Definitions

Private - personally owned vehicle with no discernible marking for rideshare

Taxi - Vehicles with taxi company markings. DC taxis will automatically be tagged based on the license plate syntax (ie H12345/12345H)

Rideshare - Uber, Lyft, Via or other rideshare services depending on your location.

Other - Delivery Vehicles, Charter Buses, Trucks, Commuter Buses

Introducing the new settings menu 🎉

Hello HMD beta testers!

In this post, we’d like to introduce you to our new settings menu! Plus, check out some reminders for general app use. We’ve added two settings options to help you customize your app submissions.

Set your primary mode of transportation while using the app. Understanding how our users are navigating the city helps contextualize app submissions.

Hide your tweets from your timeline. Set your tweets to tag 311, DPW and DFHV directly at the beginning of the automated tweet, so your enforcement tweets don’t show up in your followers' feeds

Below are a series of GIFs to help you set your preferences: Navigating to the Settings Menu Set primary transport mode while using the app (walk, bike, transit ...) Hide your enforcement tweets from your followers' feed

Automated tweets will still be generated for you, but tagging enforcement at the beginning means only your followers who *also* follow these agencies will see your tweet.

Let's say you come across a particularly egregious violation or a shockingly high number of outstanding citations, you can always unhide the tweet in the settings menu before or after generating your app submission and the automated tweet with adjust accordingly.

Report Violations in the H/I St NW Bus Lanes

The H/I St NW bus lane pilot went into effect two weeks ago. If the program is successful, it will encourage the development of more dedicated bus lanes across the city and decrease car dependency in DC’s urban core. The bus lanes are going to be difficult to enforce effectively throughout the duration of the pilot...which is where we come in! Reporting bus lane violations will help the city with real-time enforcement and medium- to long-term strategic planning. We added a new bus lane option to the list of violation types.

This violation type will only be available during rush hour (7:00-9:30 and 4:00-6:30) on H and I Street NW where the bus lanes are painted per the regulations of the pilot. In other words, you’ll only be able to report bus lane violations if you’re in the right place at the right time.

Let’s help roll out the (dedicated) red carpet for the bus!

iPhone Photo Upload Bug Now Fixed

We've gotten recent reports of photo upload issues from iPhone users (like this screenshot). We were able to isolate the issue to Safari and Daniel has fixed it after much hard work. The fix was not as simple as changing some code and may take up to 24 hours to resolve on your phones, but we've had early reports of the fix working.

If you continue to have this issue past tomorrow morning, please let us know. FYI, Safari tends to be a problem child for web app development. If you have future problems, you can use the app "in browser" Chrome or Firefox as an interim solution.

Sunday #NonForcement Fest Result

Thanks to everyone who participated! Sunday #NonForcement Fest garnered over 200 app submissions, of which over 30% were for bike lane blocking.

Looking at the data dashboard, you'll find that most of violations were centered around retail/entertainment districts like U Street, 14th Street, Adams Morgan, Navy Yard and Barracks Row.

We plan on recommending targeted enforcement in these areas to city officials as a way to implement DPW Sunday enforcement - and thanks to the collective effort, we actually have data to back it up!

We want to help ensure that the H/I St NW bus lane pilot is a success, so more bus lanes can spread across the city and decrease dependency on car travel - especially in the DC's urban core.

To that end, we're working on a bus lane violation type that will only be available during rush hour (7-9:30 and 4-6:30) and if you're on H or I Street NW where the bus lanes are painted per the regulations of the pilot.
