A tropical downpour in Louisiades
why are dog lovers so hateful??? like you meet a cat lover and they’re like “oh i love dogs a lot too! i just prefer cats!” but dog lovers are always like “my ENTIRE FAMILY was MURDERED by a CAT, a cat STOLE MY GIRLFRIEND, BURNED MY HOUSE DOWN, TOOK MY JOB AND KEYED UP MY CAR"

“that’s a pretty strong word,” they like to say, intimidated by the finality - pick a different one, with less feeling. describe it with something kinder, something reversible, just in case tear me down, build me up string sounds together till they’re spent repetition is boring and you keep saying the same things
i don’t want to hear you, and i don’t want to choose another word it is strong, but so am i and i’m pretty sure it’s true -
i think i hate you.

i know you like writing
did you write yourself into this story as a metaphor
for all the things i never had and the things i’ll never have?
did you pick your character, like an actor with a script?
did you memorize how to move me,
and then memorize how to keep me here?
your name in flawless cursive on the top of my pages
I was writing this story, and I don’t like symbols
all i can think about is losing and gaining and finding
and it seems wrong that you’re between these lines,
when you’re not between my drawn out nights -
i’ll probably write about you for a while,
‘cause you’re a metaphor for loss, and I’ve got plenty;
why’d you choose to write on me with invisible ink?

“if you’re happy, i’m happy”
i’m not yours, and i’m not happy
you found it, and then maybe you found me
but your discoveries cannot be mine,
and i’m not happy just because you are.
so i’ll leave you here,
where happy meets sad
and i’ll skip the path alone,
smelling flowers and shaking hands -
because if i’m happy, i’m happy

i’m not sure if you rained on my parade
or if the party was a funeral procession anyway
but dancing on destruction isn’t new
and neither are people like me and you
wtf….I can’t even walk without tripping how she do that……
this is so beautiful
I’m just in love with this smooth jam.

somehow it seems unfair to love the sun so much but to have to spend a short lifetime in the dark
to love laughing so much you chased it like a rainbow and to still be found in a sea of tears and it cant be fair to love morning this much and to fill it with every kind of scream and laugh but to still have to spend someone else’s lifetime, asleep is it fair, that even the fiercest love of life cannot subdue the great equalizer i’m not sure why everything about living is so compelling when death is the only thing i’m promised maybe it’s supposed to be a joke

“The art of losing isn’t hard to master; so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster.
Lose something every day. Accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. The art of losing isn’t hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, losing faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of these will bring disaster.” -from One Art by Elizabeth Bishop
if losing is an art, I am surely the artist most void of grace and skill. 20 years in, I don’t feel any better at letting go of things, or accepting losses I had no say in. It’s a new kind of difficult, every time. The reality of loss is that while it is not comfortable, it cannot be stopped and it will not be subdued. We are going to lose people, ideas, things, and dreams, until we take our very last breath. Is that final breath the biggest loss of all? The loss of a potential future, of love to be had and given, of existence? or is death only the end of an endless cycle of loss, finally brought to a halt, leaving only memories of things lost?
this week, I’ve spent a lot of time looking at old pictures, and reflecting on the things that were so important that I no longer need, or even think about. Songs I’ve forgotten the words to, and horses that I’m not sure are still breathing, and people that have new plans I’m not included in - relics of forgotten struggles. needing people or things or animals is not wrong; it can’t be. There are holes in our souls that require patching before healing, and sometimes what we need is found in other places. And it is okay. There are creatures and words that I can say with confidence changed or saved my life, because I needed them. I recognize and appreciate the place that they had, the things they did, but I cannot say I even completely understand why losing those things was necessary.
often in hindsight, the necessity of something is easily brought into question. If I don’t need it now, did I ever really need it? It seems so bizarre the way that I can hardly remember some things that used to be so special - or the way that after a period of mourning, the loss begins to fade until it is only the occasional fondly recalled thought. I’m not sure how it’s possible to love things so much, to want or need them fiercely, and then to eventually no longer think about them. Maybe that’s just outgrowing a proverbial shell, moving into the next phase of life, requiring new things and support. Thinking of the magnitude of loss in even a short lifetime is mentally crushing, and sometimes the idea of all the things I have yet to lose is more than I can or want to comprehend.
Losing things is really never fun, it can make you really angry, or cripplingly sad, or frighteningly aware of your own personhood. Things are never just things, and people aren’t just people. Everything that affects a life is somehow attached to an idea of a future, of a tomorrow, of what it means to be alive in the current moment. If something matters, it cannot be simply because it exists. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, because beautiful things are those that just happen to make your heartstrings sing an oddly recognizable tune, as if it’s been playing softly in the background of your dreams for a while. In loss, we lose a part of our song, and everything feels quiet. Starkly, disgustingly quiet. But we get up, and even if something else isn’t playing your heart song, anyone can play the tambourine, and that can make for a pretty good jig.
the pain of losing should not make us afraid to love, as wildly and freely as we possibly can. we should throw kindness and compassion around like confetti, being sure to leave a trail everywhere we go. we should be willing to embrace what comes to us, and to march to the song being played on our hearts. we have to believe that there are an endless number of good things waiting to happen, and that things are always conspiring to bring us what we need - even if it cannot stay.
the art of losing is hard to master, but loss is not a disaster. inhale, exhale, appreciate - because painful loss can only exist in the wake of beautiful presence. past curtain calls should never distract us from the current dance. & the show must go on.
the mountains are calling & I must go

sic semper tyrannis - thus to tyrants. the motto of my home state, my Virginia on my dorm room wall a constant reminder.
the flag shows a woman crushing someone else, a king who’s crown has fallen to the wayside. the word tyrant comes from the greek, tyrannos, meaning used to refer to kings and princes who rose to a position they had no right to. these people had power, but it was not theirs to be had.
this idea of a tyrant seems less relevant in our society here, where we do not have kings, and officials are elected, they do not rise to power while we are unaware. I would contest that the positions we have, especially our commander in chief, in light of this current election, are positions that require the utmost respect, and that anyone who wishes to hold the title must first earn it. not everyone has a right to the position, although any extraordinary citizen can hold it - and people can wrongly obtain this power.
candidate Donald Trump spews words that reek of hate and fear, with promises of a great America modeled after some unknown time in history. he does not exemplify the things it always meant to be American: liberty and justice for ALL. we no longer have tyrants in the sense of unworthy people snagging positions you’re supposed to be bred for - we have candidates threatening to make us a people divided, to make us afraid of our fellow men, and to “bomb the shit” out of anyone necessary. in our country, that is a tyrant. a leader who does not have the right to the position he seeks.
Trump won my home states Republican primary. Since the beginning of our statehood, we have promised that tyrants would not be allowed to stand - it is engraved in the heart of who we are. thus to tyrants - in my heart, in my state, in my country, you will not be allowed to rule. we are a people built on rescue, all refugees from somewhere, chasing our own version of the american dream.
as you decide who to vote for in this next election, i ask you to consider what it means to have hate as our philosophy, and to not allow a show of patriotism to blind your eyes to the tyranny of Donald Trump - he has not earned the right to represent us, and we must make that clear.
Sic Semper Tyrannis, Donald - you’re fired.
