I don’t want to get too political or boring in this blog of a rant but I felt this would be a proper place to speak my mind on the issue of e quality in the sport of boxing, For many years now, womens boxing has taken the back seat in promoters eyes. Whether it be non- televised, amount of little to no pay or just not showcased at all. Bring focus that fifteen years ago, the sport had a platform with a handful of well –known names fighting on HUGE undercards. It brought attention to the sport as these were exciting fights brought to large platform as corporations/promoters were using these names to sell products and fights. In the year 2013, I don’t believe there is one women boxing champion with a major company backing her name, promoting her fights and giving her the time of day.
What these people who don’t support these female fighters don’t see is the “hard work and dedication” these women put in the gym day in, day out. Training just as hard as the men if not to another level. If you ask a fight goer who has seen at least one female undercard or main event in person, with the level of competition and quality of their fights, they will tell you the female fight was probably one of the best fights of that night. Promoters are failing to see that in women’s boxing, there are stories to be told and champions to be seen. From overseas to the south of the border, the sport is treated much differently as they give much attention and support to their fighters much as we should.
I hope one day, a WBC women’s champion, doesn’t have to work a 2 jobs and a full training schedule to make ends for herself and her family. That she doesn’t have to use that paycheck from her job to pay for uniforms, travel expenses or better yet the purse of the card to get the chance to show what she has worked so hard for. In closing, I just want that these women to have the chance to be showcased to be part of something bigger and be recognized in the fashion they should be, warriors, inside and out of the ring,
