Week 5. We had all our artistic prototypes showcased and had to explore the works of others. The task for the day was to choose a prototype, reproduce that prototype and recreate the prototype with your own twist. The prototype I chose was Kate’s. The design looked elegant and yet complexed, her instructions were really clear and I had no trouble reproducing her prototype.

First attempt at an artistic prototype. Initially I had no clue on how the final outcome might turn out, after a couple of hours of cutting bit and pieces off, I felt that it was a interesting idea as I made use of the pages to create “illusions” and pop ups.

‘Book Surgeon’ Uses Surgical Tools To Make Incredible Book Sculptures

Brian Dettmer, a New York-based artist known as the Book Surgeon, uses tweezers, knives, scalpels and other surgical tools to dissect and carve old books into intricate and beautiful sculptures. Dettmer's work has a sort of vintage touch to it because he uses old books – maps, encyclopedias, textbooks, manuals, and any other sort of literature that he can turn into an interesting piece of art.

Something along the lines of how I want my final product to be. Very detailed and intricate work which I may not be able to reproduce.

Anish Kapoor’s Wound

After discussing on the different types of “bodies” , we had to decide on one and my decision was wounded bodies. Anish Kapoor’s work Wounded really grabbed my attention and I decided that I wanted to work towards that direction.

Alessandro Mendini’s idea on “ultra bodies” was explored today. The task given to us was to recreate our own ultra body based off Mendini’s self portrait. It was a little tricky to come up with the different elements we wanted in our ultra bodies.

First attempt at an artistic prototype for the first assignment. My artistic prototype was mostly dependent on the selected “dead body”. I felt that the instructions for this artistic prototype should be more of an instruction to create something similar than to be dependent on the “dead body”
