Hi there. I’m interested in majoring in classics but I feel like after uni there is really no chance of getting a well paying job that is related to classics in any way :( I was just wondering what your plans are after university if you feel like sharing?
hey! i finished up my honours last year and currently i have two part time jobs. one is working in the university library and the other is working in a small mobile food caravan.the library job is alright but it is not as productive as i’d want it to be/thought it would be. plus, it’s based in the commerce and law library, two subjects i have never studied! but i think it’s still a good starting point for experience. i love cooking so i’m perfectly fine with the other job, plus it’s nice to be on my feet and outside, as well as working in a small business.
so, i’m still figuring out what i want to do. and i’m kind of just doing what i’m interested in, as varied as that may be (some people find my job combo strange). i am definitely looking to other jobs and opportunities that i could apply to so i can keep developing.
i always encourage people to study what they love, because passion enriches your skill and work like nothing else, but i know that it’s hard to find a fully classics related job. though, for me, my classics degree wasn’t just about educating me about ancient civilisations, it was also about giving me research and writing skills. and those are things i love to do, so i don’t mind if i have a job that isn’t completely classical, as long as they’re related to writing and reading in some way. so that’s my thinking and it’s ultimately up to you how much you want classics itself to be the focus of your life. though who knows, i might find a classics job down the road somewhere. it’s hard to gauge how life turns out. but i’m happy with what i studied either way.
i’ve only been out of uni for a couple months, so any of my followers are welcome to chip in with their experiences :)
just handed in my honours thesis, aka part of the reason i’ve been so inactive on this tumblr this year 🙃 time for a nap
finally got around to putting this on academia.edu so you can have a read!
dfjhfsk i am studying a stele on which is inscribed a decree for two brothers called archippos and ipparchos………..imagine being their father and being like hmm…i think i’ll name my new son like the previous one, but backwards

me everytime i think about quitting uni to go live in the countryside surrounded by animals : this is what vergil would want

hey! what do you think are the major differences/benefits of ancient greek vs. latin? i'm trying to decide which language to take next year lol. thanks in advance B-))
hey! firstly, sorry for the late reply! i’ve been super busy with uni recently :Oin this case, i think it depends on whether you’re more interested in greek texts or latin texts. i did feel that latin was easier, but i did take latin after ancient greek so it felt a lot more familiar. from what i’ve taken from both, they both have their difficulties and perks and they both helped me pick up different parts of grammar in different ways. regardless of which one you decide, i think you’ll benefit immensely. i definitely just chose depending on what kind of texts i wanted to read (in my case, ancient greek!) i hope this helps a little :)if anyone else wants to chime in, feel free to leave a reply!
